Nice simple coop. It’s clean. Here in California people build stupid tiny coops with the goal of not having to walk into the coop to get eggs. However I feel like we need to walk in there and look at them. Plus if the coop is uncomfortable to be in we won’t go in to clean or handle them.
Thank ya for watching Boogie Maam, welcome to our community and the channel!! Well said on your comment mam, we get into the coop everyday and I agree it's important to physically look at the hens!! Have a good week and stay safe!! Dan
Thanks. I like the video. I thought about buying a coop and run from Tractor Supply, but this may be the ticket. As a young boy I remember our coop was a thrown together 8X8 building with pieces of various wood and tobacco sticks nailed together for roosts. We had a couple of old crates for nesting boxes. We always had eggs, so just goes to show you nothing fancy is needed.
Hello Mr Winston, welcome to the channel and our community sir!! Yes sir, I can identify with that, my first coop was an old tractor shed. Then I found out a good friend had tons of old reclaimed wood laying around that he was giving away so I built the coop I'm now using. I have some boards that need to be replaced but considering I've basically done no maintenance on this coop in the last 10 years, reckon I done good lol!! Thank ya for watching sir, have a good Thursday!! Dan
Hello Sabrina Reed, welcome to our community and the channel!! Thank ya for the kind comment on the coop, I wanted to build it as simple as possible and it turned out great!! Thank ya for watching mam, do come back and visit when ya can, have a good weekend!! Dan
Nice coop! If you'd add wood chips, hay/straw, lawn clippings, weeds to the floor, your chickens would have a ball and make loads of compost for you. I've been dumping wheelbarrows full of wood chips and they scratch and scratch and in a few weeks, I have beautiful compost. I also dumped a few loads of dirty straw bedding from my duck house and the chickens had a ball cleaning up all the old feed the ducks had spilled. Happy hens!
Hello Mrs Amy and welcome to my channel!! Yes mam, as soon as the weather clears up I plan on adding wood chips to the coop, I'm sure my girls will love that!! Thank ya for watching and do come back and visit when ya can!! Dan
Thank ya for stopping by and watching Southern Thrifter, welcome to our community and the channel!! Yes mam, there's nothing like watching the chickens in the coop, we certainly enjoy having them here on the homestead!! Have a great week!! Dan
I heard that j p, I'm waiting on some warmer weather myself lol!! Do let us know how that coop is coming along for ya come time!! Have a great week my friend!! Dan
Hello Mr Kenneth, welcome to the channel and our community sir!! No sir, I don't have any wire around the bottom on the coop as I didn't have any predator problems until here lately!! I thank ya for watching and commenting, come back and visit when ya can, have a great weekend!! Dan
I grow grass inside my coop. Cover with hardware clothes so they cant scratch it. The grass will grow out and they feed on it. And maybe add a light for winter time. They will lay. Mine lay year round.
Hello soriya yon and welcome to my channel, glad to have ya!! I have a wheatgrass fodder box that I built inside my coop and it's working really well, the chickens love it!!! I thank ya for watching and do come back and visit when ya can!! Dan
Ty and I just want to tell ya is I followed ur instructions on building the chicken grower for the pullets it’s great it’s like the first thing I really built myself and my pullets love it
Awesome, glad I was able to help ya some Mr Mike!! I'm not much of a carpenter but I give it heck trying to build stuff lol!! Thank ya for watching sir, have a great week!! Dan
Do you have any problems with digging predators? Do you think it'll be better to have a walk in coop or a waist high coop? I have a coop left by previous owners it's probably like 5 ft tall and 6 ft long I was going to just rebuild but I kind of want a walk in coop?
Thank ya for for watching mam and no mam, I don't have any problems with digging critters, I did have some possums and coons get into the coop because some boards rotted on the back end and they found a way in!! I personally like a walk in coop and yes mam, I'd rebuild that coop if was left on my property, you can always expand what you have!! Dan
After using chicken wire for years. I'm switching to hardware cloth . Once chicken wire starts to rust, it weakens. I've had predators rip a hole right through it.
Thank ya for watching and commenting Mr james, welcome to our community and the channel!! Yes sir I agree with ya on the chicken wire and I'll probably use hardware cloth on the next coop I build myself, thank ya for bringing this up sir!! I preciate ya stopping by the channel, have a great weekend!! Dan
Thank ya Mr Michael!!! Welcome to our community and the channel sir, we like to use reclaimed materials if possible on everything we build over here!! Thank ya for watching, have a great weekend!! Dan
Hey Tim, welcome to our community sand the channel!! Stokes, I know a few lol and yes sir, that coop was made from all reclaimed wood!! Thank ya for watching and subscribing sir, have a good weekend and stay safe!! Dan
amen man it is a nice sunny day here as well in Ga!Got me a vid processing now and ill be making one here shortly!I been thinking about getting a few chickens also so by seeing this sure helps!Do they lay that much eggs in one day or something?I dont want alot of chickens though just maybe 6 and a small coup.
Digging GA, my hens lay 6-8 eggs per day, I'm here to tell you it sure helps having fresh eggs all the time brother. I have a friend to the north of me that's getting 13-18 eggs a day!!! As soon as I get my other camera up and running, I'm gonna get some video of his coup......Dan
Hello Mr Joe and welcome to my channel sir, glad to have ya!! No sir, I don't get a lot of cold weather here in the Sip, I should say that it has gotten down into the teens before but not for a long period of time!! The hens will free range during the day and as the sun goes down, they'll find their way back to the coop to roost, I leave the door open for them, do a head count, then lock them in the coop till the following day!! Thank ya for watching and do come back and visit when ya can!! Dan
Well congrats on the yard birds brother and a huge congrats on getting some eggs!! My girls are finally starting to lay again as well, ain't nothing like fresh eggs!! Thank ya for watching my friend, you have a great week!! Dan
Hello totes goats, welcome to our community and the channel!! To answer your question, no we don't so anything special as far as sheltering the chickens, we did however build a wind wall on the right side of the coop and that helps a lot, chickens are very resilient!! Thank ya for watching, have a good week!! Dan
it needs predator proof fencing, hardware cloth is the best, a fox or weasel could easily get in. I like the open coop idea when living in hot climates.
Thank ya for stopping by and watching Mrs Rose, welcome to our community and the channel!! Fortunately for me, I don't have a problems with foxes or weasels, I have seen a possum in the coop once!! Thank ya for commenting, have a great Tuesday!! Dan
Hello Suraj Singha, welcome to our community and the channel!! I guess the best answer to your question is it would depend on the size of the coop. My coop is roughly 20x40 and I currently have 17 birds in the coop, I could probably get away with 20 birds in my coop!! Hope I answered your question and I thank ya for watching!! Dan
You may want to get a predator apron around your coup. I can see right next to your door a small critter was trying to dig under to get inside. make it at least 2 feet from the bottom wood out. That will go a LONG way in keeping critters out of your coup.
Hello there MrCougar214 and welcome to my channel!! The hole that you see in front the door is actually soil erosion from the rain. The coop was built on the bottom side of a terrace and when it rains, the coop floods some. I have those holes around the whole coop and I actually back fill in those spots with red dirt when I can. I haven't had any predator problems as of late but I do have to watch the hens when they free range outside the coop, plenty of hawks over here!! I thank ya for watching and do come back and visit when ya can!! Dan
I live in North Carolina and we have tons of hawks too. I'm going to be getting into getting my own chickens for the eggs as soon as i have the money to invest into it(building coups, etc. cost a little bit of money). But my coup is going to be built under a tree in my back yard that is behind my old pool house. It's all in the back corner of my yard so it will work out nicely. Once I get all the chicken wire/hardware cloth up around everything, I will have my coup and run all closed in. And the best part is I won't have to cut the grass back there anymore! Yah, go me!......lol
Ya got that right, them chickens will scratch it down to the dirt!! Chicken are a wonderful thing to have around the home place if ya have the space, time and money. I lucked out as my entire coop is built from reclaimed wood!! Dan
I have a lot of random wood laying around in my work shop. Probably not enough to build a complete coup but I can manage as there are so many different designs for chicken coups. The only thing that's gonna sting a little is having to buy that chicken wire. it's not that cheap for the amount you get. I can probably look around for some freebies also. My house sits on nearly 1 acre of land that is all fenced in so that makes it even easier to keep predators out. Another great part of having chickens is they will make compost for you providing you throw the proper stuff in the run. That compost will be going to my gardens for fruit and veggie production. I live in the city(or what's considered the city here) so I am limited to only 10 birds and no other livestock. But for what I can have, I will be making the most of it. My wife and I are tired of paying so much for produce and with 3 kids to feed, our own garden and chickens is going to go a LONG way to savings and healthy. I'm just really glad there are people like you here on youtube to show others what to do and how to do it. It makes this process so much easier.
Hello ameya chavan and welcome to my channel!! Yes, every bird in the coop at that time were hens. I believe a year or so ago I might of had a Bany rooster in there, I'd have to look at the video again to confirm. Thank ya for watching!! Dan
Hello Mr Steve, welcome to our community and the channel sir!! Since this video I've made several changes to the feeding system for the chickens as mice and rats were getting to the feed over here!! I went to using metal feeders and I haven't had any problems as of yet, I still have mice but they're not eating into the plastic feeders anymore!! Thank ya for watching sir, have a good Thursday!! Dan
Thank ya for watching Mike Walsh and welcome to the channel!! The grey hen is the oldest bird in my flock, she's got to be over 8 years old. I don't know what breed she is but she was an excellent layer back in the day!! Dan
There are many components to creating an amazing design. One resource I found which successfully combines these is the coop magic tactic (check it out on google) without a doubt the no.1 info i've seen. look at this amazing resource.
Hello William Mckeown, welcome to our community and the channel!! Yes sir, I have seen all the chickens use just one nesting box but out of the three I have in that coop now, two get used regularly!! Dan
Thank ya for watching and commenting Teresa Mexico, welcome to our community and the channel mam!! Yes mam, I had access to a bunch of reclaimed wood, that coop is still standing and being used today!! Good luck on your coop build, you have a good weekend!! Dan
