Found this video after I started experimenting with this myself. Main difference for mine was excluding the extra sugar that's used in most recipes I've found sometimes even simple syrup), because that overly sweet & syrupy taste in Kahlua was something I wanted to avoid.

What do you mean by _extra_ sugar? It's a liqueur, you're supposed to use sugar to make it :-)

@@TheDrCork Probably. But I really wanted maximum contrast on the sweetness compared to kahlua - which is currently my only context for purchasing coffee liqueur. I did like your rum choice though.
