How to make an extractor, extract engine linings and fit new ones. An easy peasy job - and that's from someone who had never done it before! Part of an ongoing series on the engine rebuild of my International 434 tractor

The landscape scene behind the tractor in the first sequence is so beautiful it almost doesn't seem real. What a lovely pastoral view.

Your extractor reminds me of the time Dad and I had to remove a piston pin, we cobbled together out of all thread some pipe fittings, washers, and a couple of nuts, after we did the job we just tossed the whole thing under the bench. A few months latter I was reading a car magazine and there was a full page ad showing basically what we had built, of course theirs was machined and painted black, neatly packaged and sold for way more than we had spent building ours!

Yep, that's partly why I wanted to make the video, so people don't get put off doing a job because they need a 'special' tool.

Always enjoy your calm, cool and collected approach to solving problems. I have an Oliver 1750 with liners and will use your liner puller layout to design a puller for my Oliver.

Good, this is exactly what I was thinking of making to pull the dry sleeves out of a 6 cylinder Isuzu truck engine that's now on an irrigation pump unit. I hadn't really thought about what to pull against at the top end, but I had the idea of turning a disk just like this for the bottom end, good to see the idea in action.

With wooden wedge, from underneath, you can also push out, rotate the crankshaft. it's easier.

To save you a pile of trouble next time you want you want to pull a liner. Take a arc welder and welder a bead room the bottom of the sleeve to the top on the inside. It will shrink the sleeve enough so you can lift it out.ALSO USE KY JELLY AS A LUBRICANT IS WATER SOLUBLE AND WON'T DAMAGE THE SEALS LIKE OIL BASED LUBRICANT OR THE CHEMICALS IN SOAP. THESE ARE TRICKS I LEARNED FROM A OLD REBUILDER .

Lovely job on the puller! How much under gauge did you make it? .50 thou or bigger? Thats going to run now for another 100,000 Zils! DONT throw away the old sleeves weld them on top of each other and make a can crusher for recycling. Just need to make up a tube that fits in the bore a few mm smaller, fill that with lead shot or scrap weld on a top, then you can crush your cans down to nothing to save space in the Barn? Or if that bores you make a big tennis ball cannon!

The sleeves were drawn out with great success I 'd say. Just to make sure I'm on target, are these sleeves where the pistons are going up and down in? And just above them, would that be where the cylinder head is attached? Thank you very much!

I've heard that square threads are better for this job rather than V threads. V threads are designed to bind up under load whereas square threads are designed to move under load like in a vice etc. Square threads are obviously harder to come by so I've never seen them used in this context. I'd be interested to know if there really was much of a difference. Thanks for the video, nice job.
@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 6 лет назад
You're probably right, but what I used got the job done and cost nothing! I have a puller and a coil spring compresser that both have standard thread, so maybe it doesn't make that much difference - though maybe they're just cheap ones!?
@TheBrushcutter
@TheBrushcutter 5 лет назад
All of the pullers and pushers and extractors I've ever used have standard threads. Acme(square) threads are usually for fast travel applications, or that has been my experience anyhow.

Might be a bit of a dumb question, I am not an engine mechanic (qualified bicycle mechanic though), would it not have been possible to push the liners up through the engine by using a jack with a round plate like you made braced off of the ground ?
@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 6 лет назад
Might work, but tricky to do that as the crankshaft would be in the way...
@819ANT

Don't suppose your looking to sell liner extractors ? About to embark on the same job with my international 574 and looks like perfect tool for the job. Currently water goes into the sump as fast as you pour it into the rad.

There's really not much to it! The only bit you need to make is a steel disc, the rest was just bits of scrap. If I still had my one, I'd let you have it but it's long gone. If you're really stuck for the disc and there's no-one local can assist then I could make one for you. You're welcome to contact me via my website - maximusironthumper.co.uk

Don't mean to be a bother but those blue chips are a good indicator that the metal you are turning is hard, or your revs are too fast. I'm gonna go with the revs being too high. Good build though.

Well spotted. Unfortunately the lathe won't run any slower at the moment as the back gear selector is jammed so I can only use the higher gears. It's on the 'to be fixed' list!

Hi Maxim could you tell me the thickness of bottom disc on your liner puller on 434 as I am doing exact same job on my tractor and my disc is too thick. Don't have lathe but neighbour has so he can turn it down. Hope you can help Phil
@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 6 дней назад
Hello Phil, I had to watch the video again to remind myself, I'm fairly sure both top and bottom discs were cut from a piece of 10mm thick steel plate. I say fairly sure as it was a while ago! The bottom disc was then turned to match the diameter of the bottom of the liner and the step was turned in to match the inner diameter of the liner. I don't have any of the kit left here to check as I gave it away years ago.

Hi Max, many thanks for the info ,great little tractor but previous owner wore high heel boots and spurs when I changed the oil discovered filter was just loose in fitting so was not filtering. Oil light coming on all the time so bought a kit . Big ends just starting to change colour so just in time I hope. Once again many thanks from sunny (today) Lincolnshire.

Just thinking you could buy, beg, borrow, or steal, a cheap 'E-Z up' tent (like film crews use), so that you don't have to stop whatever you're working on whenever the heavens open.

True, it is a pity. I suspect all my hard won knowledge will die with me (apart from what I can share on youtube!).

It might not appeal to a "free spirit" but ever thought of teaching evening classes- welding/engine maintenance/.. fetch in a bit of dosh at the same time. Maybe "group residential courses" on your Manor. You're a natural teacher.
@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 6 лет назад
It's good of you to say so but I actually find teaching (in person) quite stressful!

One last try, Maximus, I don't want to poke my nose in too far - Young offenders sometimes have to do community service hours. The evidence is that boys especially benefit from being with "real men" doing "manly" jobs. They have few exemplars. What's in it for you? I don't know. Contact the local probation service, maybe. Check it out, maybe. There I'll leave it so as not to be tiresome. Wishing you good health.

@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 6 лет назад
The soap is just to the ease the liners back in, any soap residue is left in the water side of the engine not the oil side!

Dear Max! Aah, okay! Now I understand: U just wanted to clean the cooling water circuit with soap simultaneously! ;-)
