I have to tell you this was one of my Dad’s favorites. My brother and me -not so much. But since Dad loved it Mom made it occasionally. We just didn’t like the look of it. Then Mom (a coffee lover) got the idea to throw in a little coffee for color. Oh no! We didn’t like coffee so it was worse. Mom insisted we could not really taste it but we sure could. I’m not saying it’s because of hamburger gravy but my brother and I don’t drink coffee at all to this day (and we’re in our 60’s)!

The first time I had this was when I was a cadet at Marine Military Academy, which is also where I learned it's nickname which, abbreviated, is "SoS." I understood the second-S because a slice of bread can visually represent a roofing shingle, but the dish NEVER deserved its first-S because it was delicious! I even made it after I graduated and came home to go to college, and then later when I was a sole-custody single parent needing to feed a hungry kid. And now it's going on the menu for next week. Thanks for reminding me!

@@holleygrise4667 I know, right? It's not just a nostalgia thing; it really does taste delicious when prepared correctly. People love sausage gravy. found that browning the loaf whole while draining the rendered fat (into a bowl) then breaking up the loaf gets a better char, (better char = better Maillard, better Maillard = more flavour). break up the loaf, brown the onions with the beef, then mix in the other non-liquid ingredients adding in whatever rendered fat you want into the pan for the roué. finish your sauce according to taste. this method can be used with meat of any fat content (e.g. lower cost) and still produce consistent results...

I use half and half instead of milk and heavy cream or if using milk only I would add more butter. The reason is that the dairy fat is what's providing most of the flavor in this gravy. Another thing I do different is to cook the onions and ground beef at the same time. The beef will be mostly browned about the same time as your onions become translucent. I also add flour at the same time as I begin adding the liquid and I gradually add the liquid rather than adding it all at once since it takes less time to add a little more liquid as opposed to reducing the liquid. All in all a good gravy. As far as the soy and worcestershire sauce that would depend on what I'm having the gravy with.
