Mom tried it once or twice; she figured she could do better and cheaper with what we had in the house. There was no need to spend the, what? 59 cents or so for a box of stuff and then buy the meat. My next exposure to it was in college with a couple of neighbors. They ate it, but... eh, not that great. This was early to mid 70s.

When I got into the construction industry after high school and moved in to my own place, my sandwiches were named after the hamburger helper I had the night before. I was lucky, most of the job trailers had a microwave someone brought from home. Tomato sandwiches were the best during the summer. TY Ricky Raines.

Kent, that hamburger helper takes me back to the US during the troop disengagement from 'Nam,... we teenagers thought we were sooooo sophisticated because we could feed ourselves a hot meal with a frying pan n what was in that 'helper' box. Okay, Kent: I have never been a fan of hamburger helper, but my husband and two teenage sons love it. I saw this recipe yesterday and decided to whip it up for dinner last night. I was AMAZED at how delicious it was and even had a bowl myself! My husband finished off the pot after I went to bed and my son woke up this morning mad because he wanted the leftovers for breakfast. He wanted me to make it again tonight, but we settled on 'in a few days, haha. Just thought I'd let you know how much my family enjoyed this new dinner staple in our house! Thank you for another great (and easy) recipe!

As a person from Wisconsin, I say "Yes" to the cheese. Can never have too much. FYI-WI is No. 1 in making cheese from cows milk. No.1 in making cheese from goats milk. We are also the only state that still makes Limburger cheese. Powerful odor but tastes great with mild onion in a sandwich.

Kent, HH was a staple of my youth when my widowed mom had to work, and this was what she could afford to feed 2 teenage boys. My wife and I are fortunate to be able to afford the kinds of food we like, but I made HH 2 nights ago, and we have had it for 3 meals. Out of the box, 80/20 and some cream cheese. It's the simple things in life that soothe the soul. Next time I make it, I will add more cheese like you did. Thanks for the memories!

I have always cooked with cast iron (thanks to my dad) and I bake with stoneware (and sometimes cast iron....depends on what I bake). I have always had people look sideways at me when I would pick up cast iron pans (and Dutch ovens) at flea markets and antique sales. I just love bringing them home, cleaning them up, seasoning them (all like my dad taught me) and enjoying the beautiful “glow” lol ok ok ok....it’s the taste that I really love! 😱😉 Thnks again & don’t ever stop dancin!

I graduated from High School in '71' & like Kent's Mom, my Mom created hamburger helper when I was a kid before Hamburger Helper was ever invented. In fact, Hamburger Helper stole the hamburger dinner recipes that were in all those Church & School recipe books, that had been floating around for years. In fact my Mom had one that was hamburger, tomato soup or spaghetti sauce, with Italian Seasonings, Italian Flat green beans mixed together, adding seasoned mashed potatoes w/shreaded parmesan cheese on top. That was one of my favorites.

Thanks Shannon & Kent (Beag & Duke). Hamburger Helper was usually the first item on the grocery list while I was growing up. Well, with six kids sitting down at the Supper table plus mom and dad, we had to stretch things out. There were usually some fresh vegetables from dad's garden to stretch it out a little bit more. Mom usually always had Sweet Tea or milk for our evening beverage. Great video presentation. Thanks again for sharing. Stan

Oh the flood gate of memories opened up as I recalled momma makin hamburger helper and tuna helper when I was growin up. I was a little taller than old yeller but still looking up at the cattle. We didn’t have much when we were young and momma worked hard to stretch every dollar in the budget including using coupons. Between things like this and our garden and canning we always seemed to be blessed with enough to eat.

When I need chopped garlic for a recipe. I like to grate my garlic with a cheese grater. I find it really breaks the garlic down, and releases the flavors and juices. Also you don't bite into a piece of garlic, if that's not your thing.
