DESCRIPTION: We call this setup the Yak Angler's Lightning Rod Pole Light system. It was a fun build and took very little time to build. The lights are waterproof. The remote receiver is not waterproof but can easily be waterproofed or put into a waterproof area on the kayak. The lights have a remote that allows the kayaker to change colors and modes. This pole light whip is a great addition to any yak angler's setup. You could take this light and create a ram or scotty mount with very little work. The end of the rod is just a 3/8-24 threaded rod. Lots of options for this setup. We didn't make a permanent mount setup for this video but plan to either use a ram ball mount or scotty mount modified to fit the light rod...thus allowing us to easily remove when not needed. ENJOY THE VIDEO.

Brilliant work! Anybody could do it with a complete machine shop. You did it with simple tools, great function, reasonable price, and simple build. Genius level work.There was a great anchor light marketed as an Owl light that went out of production. This would be a great substitute.

Well I would say my favorite kayak would have to be the Hobie Pro Angler 12 because of its spacial availability, stability, and overall comfortability for a solo fisherman/woman that wants to get out on the water and enjoy him/her self! Even though I am not yet an official owner I have tried it and its great!! Right now I own an Old Town Dirigo 120 Angler and it’s a great beginner yak! Glad I came across your page for the overall "easiness" of DIY projects at a low cost too!!

Nice project!! If you don’t want to build it from scratch, Wal-Mart sells a Alpena Britewhip LED pole, 44.5” long, RGB LED’s with wireless remote. It is made to mount to a vehicle with mounting hardware and cabling. It is approx $25.

@@KayakDIY I bought one, so I’m going to find out 😊. It is made to mount on a vehicle, so I am assuming it is at least water resistant. The leds are water proof, but the plastic tube may fill up with water. I might seal it with marine caulking first. I have to adapt the power cord for a 12 volt battery. I love DIY projects for kayaks. Keep up the great work! 👍🏻😊

FYI, I finally put together my kayak light. Thank you once again for all the info. I still haven't decided on how to mount this yet but I'll figure it out. BTW, while heating the heat shrink, I did end up cracking the clear rubber portion of the led light at several places. Lights still worked on my 12v battery with no issues and the heat shrink keeps it insulated. I think it's unavoidable with the twisting involved wrapping the led and the heat. Anyway, I'm very happy with the results. This thing looks badass. :)
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 9 лет назад
+Mondo Aguadam Glad it is working for you. Hope you like it as much as we do! The cracking might have to do with heat applied to an area for too long. We didn't see any cracking in this build. It has been really durable. My brother uses it for his ATV during the winter (snow removal) and we use it on the water for the kayak during the summer. The same one shown in the video has worked flawlessly. As far as mounting goes there are lots of options. You could put it into piece of PVC with a ram wedge mount inside one end of the PVC and cement it all together. This would create a ram mount light pole. We later did this and it has worked well. It is nice because it has a wide range of positioning via the ram ball.

DoubleDiamondStudio: We just cut the LED strip at the cut mark (every 3 less) so that it ended close to the end where the CB antenna end cap was. Then put heat shrink over all the strip tape. Then put the CB antenna end cap back on (with bit of glue) to cover the heat shrink tubing. This sealed the top end. All LEDs are encased in silicone and are waterproof.

How do you change the power from a AV plug to the 12volt dc? Do you just cut the AV plug off the power cord from the transformer? Please let me know Thanks
@KayakDIY

+John Martino Yeah we just cut the power cord and got rid of the transformer. The controller operates within 12v battery specs. They also make 12v LED light kits that would work similar for this build and have different wiring.

Fantastic Video! how do you power the pole? apologize if this question was already asked.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 8 лет назад
+Tyler Clarkson I just use a small 12v SLA (sealed lead acid battery) that has SAE connector connection to the remote receiver power supply. The battery sits inside the hull with the remote receiver. This protects the remote receiver from moisture damage. If the remote receiver is ever damaged it is cheap to replace. My brother made one for his ATV and he uses it during the winter for his snow plowing business (visibility/safety).

Battery ? And where did you find it and life of the battery while running the light
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 5 лет назад
Battery is from my battery box tutorial (older video). The lights ran for multiple outings so I never kept track of runtime exactly. Depends kind of on size of your battery and number of LEDs you wrap onto antenna. You could wrap PVC as well for a cheaper mod. I just did antenna because my brother also wanted to use it on an ATV during winter snow plowing.

COMMENT BELOW WITH QUESTIONS.

*** WARNING, DO NOT MAKE THIS LIGHT AS SUGGESTED! *** What a great IDEA this is. Funny he should call this metal rod a "LIGTNING ROD". Although I like the idea, I wouldn't want to be in the open, on the water with any metal pointing up to the sky. Especially with the potential for quick, freak lightning storms often coming up during the summer months. Even a plastic coated metal antenna would conduct electricity - AKA LIGHNING!! Most people create their pole/rod out of plastic PVC pipe. It's already dangerous on the open water in a lightning storm but to add an antenna/ metal lightning rod sounds like a lawsuit for this normally fabulous RU-vidr. I'd suggest the immediate removal of this video because of a potential lawsuit for @KayakDIY. Good luck my friend.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 5 лет назад
Jim Lewin 😂 *wow...over exaggerate much?* Tons of boats have antennas, metal tuna towers, etc. Sailboats have metal masts. Kayak has a homemade tiny antenna light and you lose your mind. I’m not removing the video and I’m not worried of lawsuits. Maybe just avoid going kayaking during lightning storms. Aside from that life has risks. If you are paranoid like Jim you can make the rod out of PVC and assemble in similar manner.

Yo! KayakDIY guys, sorry to burst your creative light-show-pole bubble, but there is nothing Coast Guard Regulation about it. It flies in the face of all standard lighting regulations/laws and could end up costing you a fine, jail time, and/or confiscation of your kayak. While duding up our kayaks with lights of all sorts is quite fun and artsy-fartsy, this "light up your kayak any way you want" has got to stop somewhere...help spread the word, breaking inland maritime navigation law is detrimental, to you and others. And you might end up having to pay in a very un-fun way. Don't give them an excuse!
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 8 лет назад
No bursting of bubbles are had. Obviously one shouldn't run the colored light sequences when in boating waters. Running white while on the water has proven not to be an issue with USCG in our area. Some even admired it. According to USCG vessels under oars need only lamp or flashlight to signal and prevent collision.

Don't be a troll. How many kayakers have had boats confiscated or done jail time for kayak lighting violations in the past 100 years? My bet is NONE. Coastie regulations specify visibility for specific distance or lumens output depending on vessel class. Yes, Coasties require approved devices, but if the light does the job, your chances of getting cited for a non approved, but functional device is practically nil, especially in small vessels like a kayak. Oar propelled vessels can have no light burning, just a light or lantern ready to show when needed. The marine Patrol or Coast Guard here would give the guy a pat on the back for exceeding the lighting requirement. His is better, brighter, thus, safer. I have been a professional mariner and captain for over 45 years, and never saw an inspector check for accredited design on a small craft light, let alone issue a citation. LEDs are new enough that the laws are not precise on them yet, though the output intensity must be met.
