Awesome video & totally intuitive design to modify considering price, boat regulations and just plain preference! Nice work.

Thanks for the tip on the toilet flange bolts....I've been trying to rig a less expensive way of attaching things to the track and this will work great! I made two ss eyebolt connectors for attaching bungee cords for less than $12.

REPLY TO Spinnerrossi: You can make diffusers from the solar light lenses, small bottle food containers, or you can buy flashlight diffuser setups here: Diffusers: www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=flashlight%20diffuser&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aflashlight%20diffuser&tag=ytk-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=RE6JX4TRIMPGVXJO Alternative Light & Diffuser Combo (bit more money $12): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00139CW44/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00139CW44&linkCode=as2&tag=ytk-20&linkId=V5L6FFUKHNKQJO6H

I like it great job! Added thought, color one red and one green with permanent marker for the nav lights
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 8 лет назад
+drewsway22 _ The problem with red/green navlights is that sometimes at night it makes boats think you are a vessel under power and they may be less cautious. That is the current talk amongst kayakers in the group www.Facebook.com/groups/KayakDIY

Fact is that USCG requires both the white and the red/green lights if the yak is motorized OR anchored. The lights need to be USCG rated (2NM nautical miles) for the white. The risk is a $5000 fine (yes, Federal fines are the highest) and/or confiscation of all equipment involved in the infraction.

SuperBardley When has the Fed gotten anything right? So many of their approved lights are terrible! I will pack their "USCG approved" light when I go out and use my DIY light to stay seen/alive. If they have an issue I will tell them their approved light sucks and my life is worth more. Boaters are crazy in my area. Flying through the flats/mangrove areas with no regard. Not to mention all I need is a flashlight onboard for signaling according to Rule 25. The other lighting laws you speak of refer to sailboat rules which is says you can otherwise follow. Folks are totally overthinking this and panicking. Never had issues with USCG and I see them often.

I hear ya, and the cert is all about the vendor paying big bucks to the 3rd party lab.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 8 лет назад
SuperBardley Exactly. From what I can tell the USCG "approved" lights are not that great of quality. Heck a walmart camping lantern for $5-10 seems a heck of a lot safer.

Love the ideas. You may have already figured this out but at 4:37 in the video instead of heating the nut you can just drive in down inside the 1/2" cap with a hammer. No heating necessary.

Was a bit afraid of cracking the plastic. Likely could be done both ways.

Thought about buying a Nilight led whip light like for a jeep and make it my 360° white light for my Yak.

How do you get the flashlight out to change batteries in the main version once you fix the diffuser to the top?

Great and Clever setup. Question on the Battery Flashlight version how to do you change the battery?
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 8 лет назад
Just unthread one end of the flashlight. The PVC coupler gives access to one end of flashlight.

If overly concerned about USCG approved lighting which seems to scare people this is an affordable "approved" light that we found didn't suck terribly. We have otherwise not been impressed with a lot of so called USCG approved lights. We chose to use our own DIY lights in USCG monitored coastal waters due to more visibility and safety. We had too many close calls with boats using their "approved USCG lights". We wanted brighter options and DIY lights made most sense for us not just in terms of safety but financially as well. Here is a reasonably priced "USCG approved" light for those still concerned about using a DIY light in coastal USCG regulated waterways: amzn.to/1szlNBf

How do you affix the diffuser so that you are still able to change the batteries in the flashlight once they run out?
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 8 лет назад
The PVC coupler isn't glued and it sits overtop of the section of flashlight that has battery access. The coupler and diffuser can be removed in one piece to access battery. The diffuser we glued to PVC, but the flashlight is not glued in where the batteries are.

I have found the cheap lights have a high failure rate so keep a couple of spares in your on board tool kit.

FYI to meet USCG regs the light need to have 50 lumen. Your diffused light most likely doesnt.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 11 месяцев назад
If you motorized the kayak you would likely be correct. However, if you are kayaking at night you would be wrong. Motorized vessels need lights that are 2NM visibility on a elevated pole. Human powered vessels require only a flashlight. I double checked to ensure the regulations hadn’t changed. My channel actually petitioned the USCG to rephrase the lighting laws and better clarify boat vs kayak requirements. It is still bit hard for many people to understand, but a lot better than it used to be.
