I made this and it's amazing! (AND vegan!!!) The only thing I changed was I used vegetable stock instead of water, added onions in with the celery, and I added cayenne and crushed red pepper at the end with the salt and black pepper (because I'm obsessed with spicy food). So delicious and SO FILLING.
Just a hint if you usually have a lot of leftover soup -- cook pasta separately and add only before eating because on subsequent reheating, the pasta can become mushy and ruin the soup. Also, the soup freezes well without the pasta. Thanks for the recipe - I love lentils!
Hey Laura! I tried this today and I love it! We have 7 children to feed, and they all loved it! It cost $4.68 to make a huge pot of it. It was last a few meals for our family. Thank you for these ideas. In today's economy its hard to feed a large family. I love your recipes. They are delicious and very affordable. I've been watching all your videos for over a year now! Love them!! Thank you!
Laura I'm in tears right now!! My grandmother isn't doing so well and this is something she would make me all the time cuz she knew it was my favorite! I'm Hispanic and we call our version of this Lentejas! It's different from yours but it still means a lot. Thank you so much for sharing this with us....
Easy as heck. I love simple recipes. I tend to shy away from recipes with a lot of ingredients. This is right up my alley. Keep the simple recipes coming Laura!
This is the recipe that made me fall in love with lentils! Also, this is the first dish with lentils that I ever tried to cook. It's been three years ago and I tried all kinds of other lentil recipes since, but I steel come back to this one, especially on rainy autumn days ;) Thank you for sharing!
I'm italian too ! We are from Agrigento, Sicily, and my nonna always puts broken spaghetti in her lentil soup :))) probably my favourite too! This reminded me so much of my childhood too, thank you for sharing this recipe 😊❤️
Just had two bowls of this for New Year's Day, as I have had for the last few years since you posted this. Thank you for this recipe, it's amazing! Can't imagine starting the new year without lentils
Dear Mrs.Laura Vitale, Thank you for sharing your heritage with us. You are beautiful and talented. To have your family and them have you is such a blessing. Your nonna is a wonderful cook and you have her authentic recipes. My idea of Heaven!
This lentil recipe is sooooo delicious and hearty at the same time. This is my go to lentil recipe since I tried it 🥰 Thank you Laura for sharing your Nonna's recipes 🌹🌹🌹🌹
Laura I made this today and my family LOVES it!! It's raining and chilly out here in California and this soup warmed our tummies perfectly! Thank you so so so much for sharing. I'm in love with this soup.
I just enjoyed a bowl of this soup that I’ve made for New Year’s Day tomorrow. Another excellent recipe. I loved the minimal ingredients and that it’s both hearty and healthy. I threw in some leftover carrots and a small onion since I didn’t have much celery and I also used a prosciutto end and a romano rind for flavor. I used some tomato passata and about 12 cups of water. This is really good!!!!
This might be my new favorite soup! I just made it and it is delicious. I didn't have parsley so I used cilantro. I also used more tomato sauce than listed on the recipe. Soooooo good!!!!
I made your lentil soup last week. The celery over powered me at first. I put a little salt on it and peppered it like you suggested. Oh, that was the touch it needed; it was marvelous. Seriously, I couldn't stop eating it. My family enjoyed it too. Thank you. It will certainly go on my list of favorites. BTW- we eat vegetarian, so we appreciate your recipes without meat and your hints on substitutions. Love your channel.
As I'm watching this video, I'm waiting for my Buffalo Chicken Pizza to come out of the oven. We are so addicted to this recipe in my house!! So delicious and so simple! I can't wait to try your bread recipe. I bought Italian 00 flour a week ago and didn't know what I was going to do with it and then you posted your recipe....fate! I also bought fregula. Do you have any favorite recipes for fregula? Gotta go...pizza's ready!!!!!
This version of lentil soup looks so good! I'm Mexican and growing up my mom made it with cilantro, onion and tomato it's delicious but I can't wait to try out your recipe!
Yes... De Li Cious! I grew up eatting this soup... My Grandma adds a few branches of cilantro (about 4 -6) and it adds an incredible taste. Thank you for this recipe. Absolutely phenomenal!!
I made this today and it was so flavorfull!! I used ditallini noodles, diced tomatoes and dried parsley because that's what i had in my pantry and it turned out delicious, no need for any extra flavors!!
Hi Laura, I am a huge fan . I made this for my husband and he loved it, actually I made it 2 times for 2 weeks, I am newly married and I am new to the whole cooking thingi, so you are practically my teacher. I have this huge problem and I was wondering if you can help me , I see your recipe, I love it , I do it, but dunno what to do beside it, like for this lentil soup, I made paprika creamy chicken with mushrooms and I had some green beans so I followed your recipe for the Garlic Sesame Stir Fried Asparagus, but I used the green beans instead, the whole 3 things didn't make sense, but individually they were all good! I lake the sense of making up a complete menu, how do you do that?? how can I do that? is there a rule for that???
I always ok at your videos to remind me of how my gramma and mother did it! I did not get there cooking genes but following your recipes makes It easy, thanks for sharing!,💖
I make lentil soup all the time and just how you made it and you are right it's delicious and it's full of protein good for you!! I love it!!!! yummmmmm!!!!
Laura when we were young my grandma would on New Years Day serve lentils even if we didn’t like we ate a tablespoon full so we could have a good and prosperous year. 💖💖💖🇮🇹
I just found this looking for a recipe. This is almost the same way my grandmother use to make for us on every other Friday. Had different spices and carrot Never had tomato in it. Going to try it this way. Was happy to find this.
We really enjoyed this! I only had one clove of garlic so I threw in a bay leaf for more flavor. We stirred parmesan into our bowls before eating----Mmm! Delicious comfort food! It kinda felt like there was meat in it even though there wasn't. That was interesting. I used ditalini (tiny tube pasta) and we both liked that a lot. Thanks so much, Laura!! A real keeper!
Laura thank you for this recipe! Hadn't had pasta & lenticchie in like... two years! My mom was so happy today, coming home to a warm dish of comfort food
So delicious!! Thanks Laura. Do you have more soup recipes without stock? Would love that. It is hard/impossible to find stock that tastes good AND is healthy.
I grew up in Colombia and lentil soup is my fav soup ever, but we make it a bit different! I actually put potatoes in it and grated carrots super yummy! And chicken stock
I am always very amazed to see how similar can dishes be. I mean I am from India and we prepare lentils in lunch daily, it's kind of staple dish here. And lentil soup is kind of same. Many of the dishes are similar although they are prepared in different parts of the world.
Hey Laura, I love your recipe! Here in Brazil we don't use pasta with lentils. Normally we use some kind of pork meat like, somoked ribs, loin or sausage. You should try, I'm sure you're gonnna like it!
tried this today in my Instant Pot and it worked beautifully! Just set it in bean/chili mode for 15 minutes. Then when it was done, set it to saute until the pasta is al dente. Will make again for sure.
had one pot yesterday... from my nonna's recipe. Love it so much. thanks for sharing will try yours soon. Don't think it's much different to my nonna's reipe.
i like this soup very much laura. If u know more recipes with green lentils PLS post the videos.Thank you very much to sharing with us, this great recipe.
Laura, you are a pleasure to watch! I have the exact same pot, so that made it perfect for me to see what it would be like for me to make it! I also can (and do) use the metal round things on the inside of the pot that hold the outside handles on to figure out where the amount of water should go, and the soup will be, etc.! The water goes right under the top round metal peace. Then the soup ends up under the small bottom round piece, etc. Thank you for showing me all of that, and explaining how thick, how to stir, etc., all the details about this recipe with me! I also wondered what pasta would taste like in it, and have know idea, but now want to try it I was thinking of trying it before, but now I definitely want to. I make Taco Soup, a recipe I got from a lady here that used to host our retreats. I would love to give you the recipe! She always provided it for us, and anyone who wanted a copy! I am sure she wouldn’t mind me sharing it with you, too. I also make a neat Stroganoff! Let me know if you want that recipe! One of my ex boyfriends had that family recipe! My Mom always made it different, so His was pretty unique to me! I was thinking of using the little shells you used, too, in the beans. What did you call them? I thought about different noodle shapes, too, I think. Broken spaghetti is a good idea! Especially if you only had a few little pieces left over!!! Hmmm 🤔?! I like garlic, like in garlic bread and stuff, so maybe I would like it in the beans 🤷♀️? I don’t know. What does the parsley taste like? I am not into the vegetables, so I don’t use them, except, when I make taco soup, I do use the corn, and hominy. I L❤️VE MUSHROOMS, SO I PUT A BUNCH OF THOSE IN THERE, TOO, PLUS IN THE STORGANOFF!!! 🤗 Mmm Mmm (rubbing my tummy)!!! 😂 I hope to hear from you, but hope you at least see this! Thanks a lot, Laura! Sincerely, Carrie Thompson 🌈Blessings🦋
I grew up on the same foods.100% Italian . This is also my favorite dish although I never had the recipe. Usually I buy canned Progresso lentil soup and add the shells. My wife doesn't like it and thinks I'm crazy.I now will make your incredibly easy and delicious recipe. Thanks Laura you are a doll and a great chef.
In Argentina we call this dish Guiso de lentejas aka lentil stew. It's one of my fave. At home we don't put pasta in and we add chorizo colorado (Spanish chorizo) or some type of sausage. I love this dish!
This recipe (with) fried garlic & selantro -in olive oil- and lemon on the top of your dish with (fried pita bread) is our Middle Eastern version . we call it حراء بإصبعه try it it's super Delicious 👌
Broken spaghetti is great in soup. It reminds me of my aunties soups. This looks so good, I can't wait to try it. I'm going to put it in my recipe collection without even testing it first I know it'll be so good!
In Greece we make the same soup but we put in carrots, a bay leaf, oregano and some vinegar at the end..And we don't put pasta! So basically it's a different soup! :P
in mexico we make this too, but we don't have pasta and we leave it soupy so it looks like theres more. my grandma calls it "poor soup" cuz that's what people would make when they didn't have a lot of money but now we make it cuz its so good and during lent when we cant have meat
I love lentil soup! In Ecuador We make it with a chicken stock base and butternut squash, lentils, potatoes, carrots, onion the one thats looong and white and green and at the end chopped cilantro... Little blocks of fresh cheese and voila!! Delicious! Try it! Is soooo delicious!
