Just a quick video on the side since many asked about the propellers and the couplings. So I hope this clears things up a bit.
About cutting up the bilgepump: there are many many other videos out there so feel free to check that out.
Any further questions?

Wow, i love it. You would think building a vehicle that goes underwater... and keeps functioning, would be difficult. I dont know if it's your voice or the style of presentation you hold, but ive learned so much from your videos and it doesnt feel impossible. This videos a perfect example, why use something else when a bilge pump motor is meant to go in water, just adjust it so it spins a prop and attach cabling to modify spin rate and youre good to go.

Hi - great videos - thank you. I am just beginning to learn about ROV’s. I will be moving on to a sailboat in a few months and thought this would be a great opportunity. Can you please guide me to the best place for the original design and build of the ROV? I like the size of what you have built and think it would work well for me. I appreciate the jump the start. Thanks!

Sure: check out www.Seaperch.org for the basic construction manual. I will post a „complete-build“ Video for the more advanced Version very shortly, so you might consider subscribing. 😬 In the meantime, you might also find help in my other ROV-videos. Clear sailings to you! 😃👍🏻

Hey, thank you for this ! I begin to build my rov like yours, but i dont find the propeller, can i put other propellers with 4mm or you now where i can found the same like you ? Thank you ! From France !
@agermangineer

Bonsoir! Sure, any 4 mm propeller will do, as long as it is not too small or too large… It’s true, those are only available from time to time… I got mine mostly over eBay. Robbe and Graupner. 50 - 60 mm are alright.

One question about these thrusters; Bilge pumps normally run in pretty shallow water so they don't have the best seals and you don't seem to be oil filling them and pressure compensating them. Are you just limiting your ROV to very shallow depths and putting up with a bit of leakage?
@agermangineer
@agermangineer Год назад
That’s right. Deepest turn so far was 15 meters. Didn’t seem to be a problem at all.

@VigilanceTech 3 года назад
you'd get a fair bit more efficiency/thrust if you reduced your gap between your prop tips and the housing. In fact, that might be a reason to go with an aircraft, or larger watercraft prop, so you can square the ends off so they run really close to the housing for the length of the cord of the prop. These types of propulsion are used a fair bit on things like tugs and are called a "kort nozzle"
@agermangineer
@agermangineer 3 года назад
I know! That’s a great comment, because that‘s all true. But a key problem here is the motor. It’s built for a tiny little drum with very low friction. A wider propeller increases the current in order to cope with the higher resistance. A slightly more experienced ROV builder (than me) suggested: never to use props exceeding 55 mm width. With 62.5 mm I have already overstretched that. And since these motors are relatively slow they work well with props with a high angle of attack. Drone props, I believe, have a much shallower angle of attack decreasing the resistance of course, but also the performance. So in total I wanted to stay safe not to overload the motor and still get good performance out of the rpm. Nonetheless they probably both work equally fine.
@VigilanceTech
@VigilanceTech 3 года назад
@@agermangineer David Gerr wrote an excellent book called "The Propeller Book" that I believe would give you everything you need to know to calculate that precisely (and either engineer or select a prop that would maximize its efficiency).

@@agermangineer One solution is, if you're still in touch with your friend with the 3D printer, you could just print a set of smaller nozzles to fit the prop. There's a number of free cad programs you can use to design stuff for printing. I find Fusion 360 to be pretty easy to use.

I am looking for that exact same motor, it seems it is unavailable to me. It should be possible to use a 500GPH Seaflo Bilge Pump correct? I may in theory need to step down that voltage using resistors or another method? I am worried that 500 GPH is too much power.
@agermangineer
@agermangineer 2 года назад
The 500 GPH pumps by seaflo are available on Amazon and eBay. However, they got a bit pricey lately. Usually they cost around 15 Euros. Also check the 350 and 1100 GPH versions for comparison. The voltage can easily be adjusted with a proper DC fan-speed regulator. Or any voltage-regulator fit for the 1-3-or 5 Amp current drawn by the different pump-versions. Check out my other videos for more info. :-)

Hi. Good job. Do you think i could take 4 of them to power my itiwit 3 kayak(2 1/2 persons) at sea? Will the thrust be enough?
@agermangineer
@agermangineer 3 года назад
I doubt that! Even with 3 Amp motors you will probably only get a thrust of about 4 pounds… any wind gust will overpower that. I mean, you can try but you can also get simple 12 Volt outboard motors for small boats online. Those provide at least 30 pounds of thrust. My guess is you’ll be better off with that. :-)😀

great project, i wonder what if you just install the bilgepump (not reassembly by other propeller). Will the thrust just same or weaker or maybe stronger?
@agermangineer
@agermangineer 10 месяцев назад
Inside the pump is just a little pelton turbine. Meaning you have very little thrust: forward you have water exiting a hole and reverse… suction into a hole - no thrust and a bit of thrust through the pump intake… going into a different direction. So: I wouldn’t recommend it. 😀🙋🏼‍♂️
