"Normal clothes smell" LOL me too! My friends always thought I was weird growing up when someone would leave a jacket or something at someone else's house and I'd smell it to see if it was mine or not. I can't stand the fake commercial scents either!

Very Timely. We just moved on to 5 acres of raw land. We are currently living off gridish in a camper but don't have many amenities. We build & such as we can without acquiring debt. It has been an adventure & humbling experience. Praise Abba as He has blessed us with this journey & we wouldn't be able to do without Him. My husband tied clothes line around 2 trees for a temporary line. It sags a bit, & we are realizing we need more lines. This has given us ideas on how to make it better on a budget Thank you!

How exciting for your new adventure!! And that you are doing it slowly and not taking out debt! I can imagine the growth in contentment and doing things the slower way, and how rewarding it will be to look back at this season! I think it would be so cool to take lots of photos of the way you are doing things and it be something you tell your grandchildren about one day, the beginnings of your homestead!

use a forked stick to prop up the middle of the line. That is the only kind of clothesline my mother & grandmothers ever had; two trees & line. The would find long forked sticks to put into the ground & kind of hold the line up. My grandmother had 10 kids & you should have SEEN the laundry. She needed more than 2 trees LOL

I grew up hanging out laundry all the time. For bright shirts, especially red ones, that can fade in the sun we would hang them inside out.

This was so inspiring! With each of the pros you listed, I was like yes, yes! I want those things! I don't think I would hang up all of our clothes, just for the sense of privacy, but I would totally hang sheets and towels! We have a swing set and a fence so I bet I could buy some line and attach it to those! My only hesitation would be if it would look kind of... Idk, untidy? Like for our neighbors' sake if they look over? We live in "a nice house in the suburbs" so I wonder if people would be like "ugh🙄" lol but all our neighbors are super nice so I'm sure I'm overthinking it!

Haha I understand! I think it could be done in an appealing way, especially just air drying towels and sheets- especially sheets, nothing smells better!

Wo cares what the neighbors think! As long as you aren't cluttering up their yard, it shouldn't matter. Saving money & being a good steward of YOUR resources are YOUR business, not your neighbors LOL. I mean this in the kindest way. My neighbor is worrying over the same silly things. If you were MY neighbor I would give you a big ol' thumbs up and maybe run a line myself & we could chat while hanging our clothes out together & then sit down for a cup of coffee. I live in the country, so I realize my 'neighbors' are like 300 yards away LOL. So I hang EVERYTHING out on the line. But I wouldn't care anyway. My husband likes me cutting down on the electric bill.

When my son(now 45) was a baby, I used cloth diapers & had to go to the laundromat to do laundry. I remember an elderly woman telling me the best way to get stains out was to hang them on the clothesline, especially in the winter. How times have changed!

We live in a very humid climate. In normal years, it rains everyday in the summertime around 4 PM. When I first came here, I tried to hang dry my clothes every time. Eventually, I figured out it isn't practical most of the time, so I use the dryer. I miss it. I love clotheslines. We are so humid that lots of people run dehumidifiers in their houses to keep stuff from getting so wet. If there is ever a time when we get a wood stove set up somehow, I will very likely have some kind of drying system next to it for clothes.

The collapsible umbrella-style lines are good if you’re in a rental community that bans clotheslines. The upright center pole slides down into a pipe sunk in the ground, so you can take it out and put it away when not in use. I have an old-fashioned four line T-pole clothesline and also use two collapsible racks for most of my clothes (prevent wear and shrinkage) and undergarments.

My mother only hung clothes out & we live in snowy NY - summer, winter, etc...the clothes hung out. We had a dryer, but I don't know why it was never hooked up. She stored craft supplies in it😂. I used to be very embarrassed that my mom hung laundry as I equated it with being poor (I am a child of the 80s & no one's mother was hanging laundry anymore). My mom would hang the t shirts by the shoulders (which I NEVER DO) and you would go to school with those tell-tale clothespin dents. So I have always hung mine in a different way so that it wasn't noticeable & therefore my kids would not get picked on about it. I have a friend who lived in New Zealand for a long time & she said the same thing - NO ONE has a dryer. It is just a part of their culture to use a clothesline & she said people would visit with each other while hanging clothes (small back yards in town neighborhoods, I guess). I LOVE hanging laundry out! I have a whole 'system' for it - I check the wind direction, sun direction, clothes hung in order of family member, I fold as I take down & then it is all sorted AND folded before it even comes in the house. My kids never want to help me, cuz I am too 'picky' about how it has to be done LOL. Trying to get my new neighbor a thrifty line & my hubby & I have come up with some clever & CHEAP solutions that involve metal rings, big hooks a 50ft loop of clothesline, 2 trees & some forked sticks. LOL

For us pollen is an issue in the spring and fall. But until we started having allergy issues I loved to hang our clothes out on the line.

I love the idea of a clothesline but where I live is a bit swampy, so for most of the year everything takes forever to dry outside and then comes in smelling like swamp

I've done this from time to time! We have a tiny lot in the city, but the previous owners had some hooks drilled into the fence on each side with a line that can be stretched between them so I can hang clothes there. But at my phase of life, I feel that using the dryer is a better use of my time and resources. It's something I'd love to incorporate in again someday, though!

I have hung clothes straight on my wire fence when I run out of room on the line. Works well for clothes, not so much for sheets. I love the racks for inside drying by the woodstove in the winter and on the porch in summer.

haha yes!! For towels, I throw them in the dryer for a quick fluff after taking them off the line... sometimes I'll leave them stiff and just make due, but usually I'll do the dryer to help loosen them up a bit for folding!

Try white vinegar that helps out a lot since it takes the place of a fabric softener.

like another comment said: white vinegar in the rinse cycle & give the sheet a good ol' hard snap right before hanging. but tbh, I LOVE the sandpapery feel, weird I know. But I feel like the absorb the water better & give you a great scrub after a shower.

WAY BACK in the day I had a clothesline and used it all the time. I loved it and I loved how the clothes smelled. I especially loved hanging the sheets out for the fresh smell! 😊 I have allergies and I found that seasons of heavy pollen were quite noticeable for me so I had to be careful. We do not have a laundry line right now but I have talked to my husband about getting one so it may not make it to the top of the ‘to do’ list this year but that’s okay. Speaking of laundry, I had an email this morning saying the laundry bar was available again at Calico and Twine. I got my order in not knowing how quickly she would sell out. Great video! I’m so excited because the rental we’re getting ready to move into has a clothes line💕💕 I would love to hear any tips you have for women living in rentals that are struggling with making it feel like home. There are tons of things I’d love to change but I can’t so I’m trying to think of ideas to make it feel comfortable and cozy that are renter friendly 😊

I love the fresh smell of clothes that dried outside. My grandmother swears by it and has used her dryer about 3 times in the last 20 years. My grandpa welded together some metal and she has 4 rows which is very nice (around 3 loads if sheets arent included). I would help her wash and hang the clothes in the morning and in return she taught me to sew and we made our church dresses and purses while they dried. It was such was a blessing 🙌

Aw, thank you so much! She's still using it 20 yrs later in her early 70's. My husband and I have been lucky to have them as examples of biblical masculinity and feminity, and how to work together as husband and wife.

I hang dry my clothes inside my house I rent currently and I love hang dry clothes save electricity too. Been doing it for 3 years+. I come from Jamaica and we hang clothes outside. Sunshine clothes feel and smell so good. I live in Canada so only enjoy sun dried clothes in the summer. Refuse to buy a dryer I found I can live without it.

The will to dry in home came from spending too much money drying clothes so decided to buy some racks and never went back. I hang sheets and comforters. I have the space so it takes an only a few days to dry inside. I have been in Canada for over 15 years came as a young girl I been back home twice and the last time I went was Nov 2019. I realized very much I liked the quiet pace of life and the greenery compared to the hustle and bustle of the city life with all its concrete towers. There was a relaxing feel about it that I wanted to claim when I came back to Canada. Not even 7 months later I had moved from Toronto Canada major city and I’m so much happier where I’m at lots of green space and not a bit of traffic. I miss the food a lot back home. Food here doesn’t compare. I find I don’t enjoy the process food here at all even from a young age my taste never liked all the boxed food I’m a home cooked person. I even make a warm lunch for work everyday. The food is my number one dislike because organic doesn’t taste like what it is back home. I heard you have been to SA and I think it’s a very similar style of life there. Sometimes I think to pack up and move back but the infrastructure is not there like it is here in Canada. So thankful to be here and to have somewhere lovely like Jamaica to go back to. Growing up back home was much better than Canada I may not have had lots but I was happy unfortunately I lost a lot of my innocence when I came here. Had hope for a mothers love but never received it. I’m so glad I spent my early years there. Also after watching a lot of ur videos these past few days on both channel u made me see the beauty of being a homemaker. For the longest I wanted to be single and serve God but realize that may not be the path for me. You open my eyes to what I really need and want and that is what Elohim had set up from age old since Adam and Eve. Never been in relationship and looking to navigate one in the future. Thank you for your videos and you have a lovely cozy home. Also loved your how u met story I was very happy was shouting praise the Lord. God writes the best stories. And yes I believe when u know u know we shouldn’t waste time dating for years or jumping around dating a bunch of people. I’m very traditional and conservative. Lord was really guiding me to your videos.

Thank you for this April! The only way I know to get rid of the crispy towels is tossing them in the dryer for a quick fluff after getting them off the line. Another commenter mentioned using vinegar in the was alleviates the crispiness too!

Towels and jeans and some sweaters feel tough and rough. I have tried all the tricks but nothing helps... Any suggestions?

Just recently a listener recommended using vinegar in the wash cycle to help with this. For those type of things, I will usually just put it in the dryer for a quick fluff with the dryer balls and that gets the roughness out of them!

@@pattyhansen7563 That's actually very good to know. We have trees surrounding our place, and bird feeders, they poop on our patio, so I figured a clothesline would be a great target for them. The small outside rack I have won't hold many clothes, so I think a real line would be great to at least try. Thank you.
