For sound quality, HomePod. For smart home device compatibility, Echo. So get a bunch of HomePods but a few of Echo dot (Echo dot are sometimes bundled for free when you buy other smart devices anyways.) 😆
They are not meant for hifi music. Speech sounds great on it so communications, notifications, audiobooks, etc work real well. Combined with the pricing, it's why Alexa is #1 in that market.
The echo do is a speaker is facing the front but the mic was on top. So it makes the sound of the echo dot even worse, the echo dot is actually has a decent sound.
The HomePod sounds incredible and it’s more than loud enough for me and I just use it too listen too music and too ask very basic questions too Siri so I’m gonna be getting that
like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ru-vid.comUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
The echo do is a speaker is facing the front but the mic was on top. So it makes the sound of the echo dot even worse, the echo dot is actually has a decent sound.
Sorry guys editing mistake, but trust your ears. At first you hear something that sounds terrible (echo dot) and then something that sounds amazing (HomePod Mini) lol..
Suggestion for future videos: show us what they sound like at lower volumes. I find the sonic balance drastically different on these when your rocking a party vs having it on in the background at work or for socializing. I have the new echo and I find it gets harsh as hell as it gets loud too. Another suggestion is to test the audio with them close to a wall. No one would put an echo on a table in the middle of a room like your test. Put them on a shelf like we users do. That will affect bass balance. Thanks! I'm surprised apple hasn't made a speaker in the range between their two models as a $199 model would sound great. I guess you could stereo pair two of them.
LOVE the Homepod Mini. As I'm already vested into the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac, AppleTV, etc) the Homepod is the obvious choice for me. I also own Echo, and although Echo is "technically smarter," if you use Apple devices, Homepod has some tricks. For instance, I use Carplay in my car. With a Homebod, all I have to do is tell Homepod where I want to drive to for navigation. Seamlessly, once I get into my car and use Car Play, my navigation is automatically set up. LOVE that. With the Incredible Sound of the Homepod Mini... I'm ALL In!
Think it depends. I am invested into the Apple eco system (Phones, Laptops, Accessories) and I decided to go with Google/Nest for my Smartphone eco system. They all work great together.
@@leebeeskee Ikr, they're absolutely fantastic when they work in pairs. Only problem is that, you are limited to only a pair though. I have 2 in most of my rooms, but in my living room, makeshift part hall and basement, I have to put a pair in every corner and synchronise them manually to play the same song and start together. Otherwise, it doesn't just give the same room-filling immersive spatial audio feel I get in my bedrooms.
@@leebeeskee I wish Apple would introduce a new device to connect more than 2, something like a 5.1 surround subwoofer, something like an AirPort modem maybe. Or they could also bring it out with a software update to AirPlay, where devices compatible with AirPlay 3 allow you to pair more HomePods together. Now that would blow me away.
@@Darkshadowguy yeah, so? I couldn't give a sh*t about the price if it meant sacrificing quality. A better product remains a better product, even if overpriced.
For 99 % of people price matters. The danger of getting in to the Apple eco system is that, you get locked in to the high cost system. Sure Apple products are great but once you go in, customers are committed to that high cost eco system. The ultimate decision is always 1) Do you mind the high Price eco system? 2) Do you mind being restricted in terms of accessibility in Apple's ecosystem? But I do agree Apple's devices are great sounding in a such a small package.
I have it too. It’s amazing! I did a sound comparison with the HomePod mini, Echo, and Echo Dot. The HomePod mini smashed the Dot, and it had better bass and clarity compared to the Echo. I love it!
IMO the best sound: HomePod mini the most useful one: Echo personally I would pick homepod because it sounds well, it’s 360 sound, it is small and I could have it easily outside, Siri isn’t the best but it is “usable”
How is Alexa that much better than Siri? I recently bought an Echo because i wanted to use that legendary assistant everyone talks about, but Alexa is pretty much on par with Siri on my HomePod in my experience. What scenarios show Alexa’s dominance?
@@jackmanning1117 they have a much better eco system (smart home appliances wise) than the Apple’s HomeKit. Most of the cheap smart home devices support both Google Home and Amazon Alexa but not Apple HomeKit. Also sometimes Siri is just stupid compared to other assistants.
Nah Bruh, the nest crushed it for EDM and classical. Plus the Google assistant is more smart than both and understands more commands U don't have to repeat shit.
@@harryxie981 oh yeah I don’t use any smart devices so I couldn’t care less about the smart home ecosystem. I just use my smart speakers for playing music and answering random questions (which Siri seems to be just at good at as Alexa)
@@harryxie981 but that is not a great argument for the Echos or Alexa itself. The approach Amazon took with Alexa is quite dystopian. Since they couldn‘t care less about privacy, you can usually connect every smart home device that‘s out there - but usually at the cost of privacy AND security, plus quality of the product itself. Every major brand that I‘d trust is easily available as HomeKit compatible, Philips Hue‘s, Ikea‘s trådfri, Elgato Eve, Bosch, Vocolinc, etc. I have my whole apartment set up with smart home stuff and HomeKit is by far the easiest way to control all of those and make automations. Maybe on par of Samsung‘s SmartThings or even better. If you have the cash and don‘t want your data to land on chinese servers, definitely go for HomeKit. I use it every day and it‘s just awesome.
Okay yes, sound quality is highly subjective . But I feel that the Nest Audio deserves so much better than in this video. Yes, it has not this shattering low end, but it sounds so balanced and great for all types of music. The HomePod Mini is really U shaped to my ears (but not bad by any means) Sometimes I believe that everybody has forgotten about what good sound really means. To my ears the Nest Audio is not far behind the Sonos One. Only con is that it is very directional, so the sweetspot is a little bit small
The HomePod sounds incredible and it’s more than loud enough for me and I just use it too listen too music and too ask very basic questions too Siri so I’m gonna be getting that
At around 5:03 why does the sound quality turn bad? Bad attention to detail.. pretty much can guess that low quality music is the echo mini.. I mean come’on.. could’ve tried a little harder with editing.. laziness lol
I'm well and happy in my Apple ecosystem, but the audio quality and value of the Nest Audio is unmatched. I don't really care for Apple's features in the Mini, and tbh Siri is still trash, so the Nest Audios have been awesome and I love them.
The echo do is a speaker is facing the front but the mic was on top. So it makes the sound of the echo dot even worse, the echo dot actually has a decent sound.
The HomePod mini does't send any data to Apple until it hears "hey Siri" and you can even turn that off through software in the home app. I suppose accidental activations could be a concern, but overall it has excellent privacy. I just know someone is going to reply "apple says it doesn't send any data but they could be lying," to which I say, Google could be lying about what that mic switch does, or they could have a secondary microphone built in that isn't affected by the switch, or one of a dozen other things that would let them still spy on you, all the switch does is give you the illusion of extra control. Unless, of course, you decide to take it apart and analyse every component.
This was an interesting comparison. Being an old-timer, who uses a pair of hearing-aids, the sound coming out of my iPad Air 2 was terrible. However, I watched your review, again with a pair of decent powered speakers which I have connected to my MacBook and the differences were much more evident. As it happens, just before I listened to your review on my iPad, I had set up a pair of Mini-Homepods , as a stereo pair in my living room and was so impressed by the clarity. , Most of my music is Classical and perhaps future demos could include a short snatch of Elgar's Cello Concerto , or a violin piece to see how non-amplified instruments sound.. I'm sure that some people do listen to such music amongst the younger group , that you aim your channel at. One more thing : having the speakers on that hard worktop might make the sound somewhat harsh. Perhaps a heavy cloth or anything softer might make a difference. I also have larger Homepods installed in three other rooms (I live alone ) so my house is also filled with such waking music as Shake Rattle And Roll or Rip It Up . Thanks for your efforts in making interesting videos.
@@truthistheKJV . I am listening to the stereo pair in a room about 15' 3" by 25' and they are sharp and clear and plenty loud enough. But I am playing popular instrumental tracks from the 50s and 60s, such as "Telstar" and "Take Five" ,and the bass in those days is nothing as heavy as modern rock, say. Remember, also that I am wearing hearing aids set at normal levels, so my hearing will not be anywhere as good as normal. Of course the depth is not as good as the larger HomePods, but look at the price difference. My advice is , if you have the money, buy a pair from Apple, try them You have 14 days to return them , if you are disappointed. Good luck.
I have a set of paired full sized HomePods in my living room and love them (got them on sale at Best Buy earlier this year for $200 each). Just bought the mini for my home office and am very impressed. I also really love using the phone handoff feature for calls. Regarding this test, the mini continues to impress. Naturally the larger speakers can achieve higher volume levels. One of the best features that the apple products have is the ability to hear you even while playing at loud volumes. This had been a serious source of frustration with my Google and Echo devices, granted they are older models. I am not sure if Google and Amazon have improved their listening skills on these newer models. Lastly with regard to Siri vs. Alexa vs. Google’s smarts, I would take security over diversity any day. Yes, Apple’s ecosystem is walled, for good reason.
No real comparison will be made between the Homepod mini and another speaker at the same price or less expensive. No medium or high sound is sent in your direction, but only the bass. It is on a piece of furniture, at a distance of 3m that the comparison must be made with the microphone on the person filming and not above the Homepod.
100 percent agreed. I think some of these comments mustve came from people watching the video on their phones. On my TV you can clearly hear the difference between the top 2 vs the others
You forgot a few other things: the Echo does not only have an aux-out. That aux-out can also be configured as an aux-in. On top of that, it also sports a full featured Zigbee Hub.
I have to say the Echo (large) sounded better in every test to me. Large and more defined sound. Sorry to the Homepod fans but the homepod sounded muddled and small, simply lacking in mids and definition.
Got me a couple of Nest speakers on sale from Google with 33% off a few years ago (only €66 each). Probably the best tech investment I've ever made. When paired up & output adjusted via the equaliser settings those really pack some punch. Assistant works very well in general, but on occasion I get a response telling me 'I can't find the other speaker in this pair' for playback which can be somewhat annoying. For the price I got them at it was a win-win situation.
Let me guess without watching the vid... ..." Wooohoooo guys i cant believe how much better the apple products are... This is unbelieveable... Im freaking out.... Invest invest..."
I have 9 Echo dots and 2 Show's in my home. I'm replacing them with Google, simply because Google seems to have a LOT more information, and a better understanding of what it's being asked to do. Case in point: 'Alexa, how much is the lottery?' (I get an unrelated answer) I ask another 4 times, and get similarly unrelated answers. It takes about 5 asks before getting a straight answer. I can ask for information on an upcoming album drop, and am told 'Sure. here's (unrelated / unrequested) music'. Alexa, how's the traffic? I get directions to a destination I've never requested. Alexa, shuffle my music ... nothing plays. I ask another 3-4 times. ALEXA! PLAY MY MUSIC!! a podcast starts. It's just too much. When I fight with my AI on a daily basis, it's time to disconnect.
I don't care about sound. I care about the personality of the assistant. I can't stand Amazon Echo/Alexa by now. It never shuts up. Even on Brief mode it constantly adds "By the way," or asks "Did I get that right?" It's also a pain to deal with in several other ways. I'm only here today because despite being heavily invested in Amazon Echo and Amazon Smart Plugs (that only work with Echo), I just can't take it anymore and have to find something else that just does its job and otherwise keeps quiet. Imagine being interrupted constantly at inappropriate volumes (people are sleeping, or first thing in the morning, for instance) by every light switch or outlet in your house and that's what it's like to invite the Amazon Echo/Alexa combo in. It's torture that never ends.
If you’ve been using component system for all your music, then you hear this form of sound output. Well there’s the take it with you. 500watts and tin can. Apples and oranges it’s all gone pear shaped!
At 4:30, it Sounds like you failed to add the speaker graphic whenever the Echo Dot was playing. The sound changed but the graphic stayed over the HomePod mini. Yes?
I will NEVER buy anything Apple! The home pod SUCKS. My 4th Gen echo dot sounds and work great, I feel you skewed the results and did some post recording & editing to make Apple sound better ,I have compared BOTH and the home pod sounds like it sound come from a sardine can
First track, HomePod Mini. Second, small dot was crap. They were all far better by comparison. (By the way your indicators of what’s playing hovered over the HomePod when it was clearly the small Dot 😆 But the crappy sound quality was the biggest clue as to what was playing.) In the third track the HomePod was the winner. Bass was clean as was the brass. I’m not a fan of Amazon Alexa in my home or of Google Assistant. Too many stories of them listening to what they’re not supposed to. Siri is a win for me in terms of privacy. I don’t use Assistants much so that’s not a feature I really care too much about - it’s more the sound quality. So I’m going with the HomePod. Just have to decide regular size or a pair of minis.
So many people on here saying the HomePod mini sounds the best!!!!! Ummm they must be hearing something I don’t! I have one and and also the larger echo and there is absolutely no competition the echo sounds wider, larger soundstage, better mids and treble on par with lows. And sounds better. But then again that’s my opinion. I suggest people try both before deciding. Then make your choice.
I think the Nest is the best all around smart speaker but that's largely because Google assistant is wayyyyy smarter than Siri and relatively smarter than Alexa (not as big of a gap and Alexa shines in certain areas too but I find google to be the most useful for my needs)... All of them sound pretty decent in a smaller room even if some are technically better than others. That said, if you care at all about having decent sound quality Sonos One blows all of these away and you can use either Google Assistant or Alexa (whichever you prefer).
Everyone bad mouths Siri by saying it can’t do as much as the Google assistant or Alexa, but no one, not one, talks about all the privacy information you give up by using those two. Siri and HomePod Mini for the win!
Echo much better than HomePod, this speakers are meant to be smart assistants, and Apple is horrible, you can pair like 5 devices need to have all apple ecosystem, yeah it sounds nice but for that there are a lot of better speakers like JBL, sony etc, the Echo has a nice bass, loud, Dolby digital sound, Alexa that is much much better than Siri and you can pair with almost everything, plus it has a hub inside you can pair zigbee devices too. Alexa have skills, better than google and far better than siri, google is a bit better with paring with the google apps like gmail, youtube, google maps and google search. To me between all of those i would choose Echo, the echo dot only if i need extra Alexas for other rooms and Echo for the main device, it's the clear winner for me, better sound, better Smart Assistant, better compatibility with other devices, have a hub and dolby sound.
Wow those dots are fucking trash. I was actually considering getting some for my parents for Christmas but those are just horrible. I’d much rather get them the nest audio over that. My girlfriend got me a HomePod mini and after watching this comparison I’m so happy she got me one.
Sorry, but they all suck. But then you get what you pay for. I had to laugh about your recommendation "audiophiles should buy this" . Don't know any audiophiles who would even look at it.
you really messed up which speaker was playing on the rock track, when the HomePod mini was playing, you put the volume icon above the big echo. you can tell when the homepod mini was playing based off of the light on top
got one Google nest audio for $60 ay black fridays. used they are $40 perhaps. but to few tests mention that it does not have bluetooth as do the google nest mini, especially is you just wish for youtube audio off an ipad. on andriod you can cast the device
Damn it man, i mainly need one of these for turning shit on and off with my smart appliances. Everything i own supports alexa or google and none support the apple homepod. It sucks that i am balls deep into the apple eco system.
I feel like the speaker icons in the test at the 5 minute mark are misplaced. The homepod display lights up when it’s the Echo’s turn, plus I can’t tell when the dot is playing.
😢😢😢 I.... just ~2 weeks ago bought the Echo Dot and I love music! I thought the Dot was great (in terms of sound as well) as I had an old Google Home Mini in the other room.
Apple probably is one of the few tech companies out there, able to not put a microphone switch into their smart speaker, while the majority will be ok with that.
I'm not sure if you're saying that as a good, bad or neutral thing, but I agree with you. Because of Apple's privacy-centric reputation, people trust that their data is safe.
