Homes From Hell - Northern Ireland

Seadna and Mairead Billings tell the series how they took out a 100 per cent mortgage of £175,000 to buy their dream three-bedroom new-build home near Belfast.
The couple moved in in 2008 and soon discovered the surrounding houses were all empty. The estate was meant to have 70 houses on it, but work had stopped due to the property crash, many homes were not finished and only a small amount had been sold.
The estate became a 'ghost-estate', one of around 621 in existence in Ireland. Seadna and Mairead tell the programme how they were living alone in their street and the derelict houses around them were soon under-siege from vandals and rodents.
As he peers through the windows on the abandoned estate, Seadna says: "Fireplaces are ripped off and skirting boards taken up and doors taken off and you can just see the vandalism and theft that's gone on around the place...it just gradually got worse and worked it's way down closer and closer to us...we were worried, if we were going to be sitting in the living room, if there was going to be a brick come through the window."
Eventually the couple decided to leave the property and move into a rented house. Now, after being left paying rent and a mortgage, they have decided to declare themselves bankrupt and have the house re-possessed. In emotional scenes Seadna and Mairead show Homes From Hell the home they had hoped to raise a family in which is now derelict and boarded up.

Why didn't the government step in, and finish the homes, and rent them out as council housing? What a waste of potential accomodation.

Awful for this couple who thought they were making the right decision to secure their future. I wouldn't trust the government - which government would it be anyway? Westminster or Stormont? Perhaps a realistic future for this estate might be something similar to what is going on in Toxteth. People who will make a commitment to live in the properties and work locally get a property for £1. The property developer should pick up the tab for the shortfall, creating a housing development which has come to this. Seadba and Mairead should be top of the list if they would ever consider going back. Wonderful people who would be a pillar of the community wherever they choose to go.

This is how offenders causing vandalism should be taught step 1- Tell them not to do it and order them to pay damage fee's step 2- Boot the shite out of 2nd time offenders and make them fix everything and pay as if the person needs builders to come in and fix it step 3- Cut hands off of 3rd time offenders

It's a deliberate tactic, this has been done so many times around the world. Look what happened in New York. These places are deliberately run into the ground through zero policing. The price will drop and drop then the "authorities" will come in and save the day and just WATCH who gets those houses for free/next to nothing - why the elites of course!!!!
@lillianfouhy8093
@lillianfouhy8093 4 года назад
It's a well orchestrated plan. Think it through. Looj at what Cork City Council have done to areas like Barrack st - drove good people out of their homes with the Gardai doing nothing to counteract the criminals that forced people out. Now they're claiming they want to rebuild it with families, when they drove all the original families out, assisted by the Gardai - you can bet the developers will make a packet!!!!

I was christened a Cadillac (Catholic) but I would happily marry a Protestant, even if they were deeply religious, if it felt right.. I wouldn't dream of interfering with their beliefs.... as long as they respected mine.. I am more spiritual than religious. I feel great empathy for this couple.. They didn't deserve this to happen to them.. The every day citizens are very unprotected in life in general. Just because two people may have different backgrounds or beliefs it doesn't mean any friction and or aggression needs to occur. Respect each others beliefs and get the same in return.. Nothing wrong with that way of life what so ever as long as one doesn't encroach on the other. Keep the place insured if vandals in the area and you don't feel safe living there anything could happen? Even a bad fire or gas explosion?

*SCRIMP AND SAVE! BECOME A "SKINFLINT"*! Do the same as you would with a first car: "Buy here pay here" - make a deal with the OWNER. Save up and buy a sound home in need of repairs at a very low price in a decent neighborhood and fix it up *yourself* and resell at a good profit. Doing the same, work your way up to the house you want to actually *live* in. That's what I did. I started out with a £6,000 55 sq. meter house, sold it for £24,000 then bought a 5 bedroom 3 bath 223 sq. meter Victorian house for £18,844 and resold it for £300,000. It *can* be done but it takes a bit of brain and sweat. You *CAN* outsmart the usury money lenders! I suggest you read *CHARLES GIVENS* book. *WEALTH WITHOUT RISK*. I followed it and made my first million within *TWO YEARS!* *ALWAYS* be sure to get written *contracts* including EVERYTHING *YOU* want! Good luck! You *CAN* do it!

t4705mb6 Yeah you go on a rant about whatever which make you a spam artist like many others on youtube. The video is about a couple buying a newly built house in a development.. The market tanks and the development isn't finished. The house they own they can't live in . They can't sell it.. What you are saying isn't applicable to the situation. Sure there are fix up apartments and houses available but it's not a viable route for many people.. You still need someplace to live and rent in addition to the house costs will cost alot of money .. Double wide route isn't really an option outside the US. Lay off the glass pipe

Oh wow, I am so very sorry for the Billings. Much of the same happened here in the U.S., and back then, my wife and I were living in Las Vegas, NV. I had bought my new home in 2003 and was all right. I worked for the federal gov't and had a good and fair mortgage with my Veteran's Administration backing my loan (fixed rate of 5%). Not very many other folks in Las Vegas were that lucky, though, and the city really suffered through a very, very bad time. LOTS of foreclosures and lots more people losing their jobs in the casinos, in addition to their homes. They say that we're probably going to go through another financial crisis in the not too distant future, largely because nothing was done to prevent what happened in 2008. They didn't reinstate the Glass-Steagall laws that were put in place after the 1929 crash and not a one of the corrupt banking/financial institutions were ever held to account for their shady dealings that caused the crash in 2008. The situation sucks, which is exactly why I am voting for Sen. Elizabeth Warren in the upcoming 2020 U.S. elections. I've had enough of the crooked Republicans and their asshole, scheister politicians. Good luck to the Billingses. I do hope and pray that things have worked out for them, somehow. They were doing exactly what I did 15 years earlier but the bottom fell out on them. That's what you do for your future. You buy a home when you can and you work to pay it off so you have an asset & a secure, cheap place to live when you are older. They were doing exactly what you are supposed to do for a secure future but it went bad on them in a way nobody could have predicted. It hurts my heart to see things like that.

I believe that even if you are bankrupt, you can still have a 'cheque book type of A/C but with a building society instead of a high st bank. I wish you both well.

I went through the same thing in the United States; eventually, along with losing our house and its value, my wife divorced me. Later, I decided to retire, leave the country and most of my ties to it and move to the less fortunate country of the Philippines. In spite of my X taking a third of my pension money, I've been able to on Social Security acquire an interest-free contract on a nice new home and remarry. I also have an adopted daughter with a baby due in May. I think if I had been much smarter, I could've avoided the calamity of the real estate crash, but I would have ended up divorced anyway and joined with the rest of middle-aged divorced American men suffering pointless and purposeless lives. Unlike American women, there are women in the world, who still find men to be important. American middle-aged men should realize they don't have to submit themselves to a relegated lifestyle of isolation living in some empty ghost town where it's relatively cheap to live. All they need to do is forget the American nightmare, leave and travel somewhere else where dreams are not only more pleasant but possible. Along with others, that's what I did with no regrets.

Same as Malaysia real estate, you be lucky if they ever complete the project, but if they do, everything will fell apart. Crime is high, it is never safe to go out at night. Never invest in Malaysia, no matter how low their currency is.

I watched a number of these videos about incomplete houses with underwater mortgages. This is happening all over the world. The elephant in the room are the bankers who wrote the legislation that legalized complex lending devices designed as a debt trap. Then they bundle-up the mortgages and sold in them unwarey investors or employee pension plans. They knew full well that when the interest re-adjusted that it would result is losses for all involved. This was a massive debt trap on the part of the banks that insures that the only one who wins are the banks. The only government and people to defy this criminal situation is Iceland.. They said, Fuck you!.. England and the Nederlands threatened to put Iceland on the terrorist list. That ought to tell you something..

I got my first credit card when I was 45 or so. I had to get a secured card with a balance of 250. When I did good with this they upped it to 500 and eventually 1000 and finally unlimited after a few years. I bought cars and own a home. I paid cash for my cars, and I still do. If I dont have the money for something ..I DONT BUY IT! Im 68 nw. When I was coming up they didnt just give CC away. They were hard to get. My son who is 33 has a stack of them, and he is always in debt. He has finally learned, but he was hardheaded, like most young people. I never use my ONE credit card. If I do I pay the balance at the end of the month. I wont let those blood suckers make money from me. No car interest, nothiing. When you buy a car, you practically pay for it twice. Why? The dumbest creatures are the ones who get a 6 yr note! STupid. Do without. Save,

Wow....interesting to learn that the stories from housing bubble and mortgage crisis in the US and Europe are so similar. Doesn't make it any easier, but I am curious now to understand if the same sub-prime borrowing and over-leveraging which existed in the US was also a root cause of Northern Ireland's problems.

That was over 10 years ago. I bet the houses are probably been resold and work twice what they initially paid for it by now. How did the government not buy all those houses for $1 each and turn them in council houses?

It takes a lot of money to live in Ireland to begin with. I had a friend who lives in Limerick. She is 23 and still lives at home with her mother and father. She works in a small clothing store and spends her paycheck on The Walking Dead crap, has both arms covered in tats from that tv show. The rest of her money goes on concerts unless mom beats her to buying the tickets. She had such a great life planned out for herself, she finished high school and was taking a year off before starting college. It never happened.Ebay has become life. Anyone know the cost of living in Limerick today (2019)?

Would be amazing if the local council were to step in and reward their "good" tenants who had always paid their rent and not had a complaint with a rental. It would be so easy to do a deal with the building firm, guaranteed rent every month and no vacant buildings, As for squatters we don't have any of those head lice in Scotland they get hauled out by the hair...in the dark. England let them piss about ruining other peoples properties but mercenaries are easy to buy up North,

The same thing happened to me and my partner in the USA. The Banksters created the housing boom and bust in 2008/2009 in order for the transfer of wealth to accrue to them. Sad....but we are much wiser now and on to the Banksters.
