Homeschooled People Answer Commonly Googled Questions About Homeschooling 

Okay, i hate the generalizations so let me explain some things from this video. 1. Are homeschoolers socially awkward? Definitely not all homeschoolers. I hate how they’re saying that all homeschoolers are socially awkward; THEY ARE NOT. I know so many homeschoolers that I didn’t know were homeschooled until they told me. Many, many people have been surprised and/or didn’t believe me when i told them i was homeschooled because i am such a social butterfly. Many homeschoolers are outgoing. 2. Is homeschooling good? Homeschooling does have many benefits because you can learn at your own pace/ usually have more options when learning. I personally am homeschooled because I have more options. I take online classes, which is a form of homeschooling, and I am able to take AP classes and other courses that the schools in my area do not offer. 3. Is homeschooling bad? It depends. Homeschooling is bad for some people. Being homeschooled often takes a lot of self-motivation. In some forms of homeschooling, it can be very easy to cheat. So, you need to be at least somewhat determined and moral. For people who are not self-motivated and find it easy to cheat, homeschooling is probably not for you. 4. What time do homeschoolers wake up? that guy who said “homeschoolers definitely sleep longer than public schoolers” is wrong. that’s a generalization. I wake up at 5:30 AM monday through friday because I have more time to get stuff done. I know homeschoolers that wake up later and earlier than 5:30. Not all homeschoolers sleep later. 5. Are homeschoolers lonely? Again, not all. Just like public or private schoolers, some of us are lonely and some of us aren’t. There are many activities that homeschoolers can get involved in. Just because we are homeschooled does not mean that all of us isolate ourselves in our houses all day and do school. Homeschoolers can often get involved in co-ops, sports, orchestras, and even take classes at local schools. I know almost everyone in my town and I hang out with my friends after school or on the weekends; being homeschooled doesn’t strip away every opportunity of social interaction. 6. Are homeschoolers smarter? Here are some statistics to answer that question; you can decide for yourself: Homeschoolers typically score 15-30 points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests, and homeschool students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT tests that colleges consider for admissions. (nheri.org) 7. How do homeschoolers get into college? Like any normal student. We take the SAT and/or ACT and apply as any public or private schooled student would. In fact, colleges are increasingly seeking homeschoolers to attend their college. This was a fun video to show people’s experiences with homeschooling. I just hate when people generalize, and especially about homeschoolers. We already have some bad connotation around the idea of homeschooling; there’s no need to increase that :).

Homeschooling is weird? Like going to a government-run facility isn't weird...

My mom is a certified teacher. She homeschooled me because she was worried about bullying, which in todays society has gotten worse. I took choir at a public high school and I started with community college. I got my associates with a 4.0 GPA and transferred to a four year for my bachelor's degree.

I was homeschooled for seven years and I grew up with the best friend group I could ask for. Coming to public school was so weird because it never really occurred to me that so much emphasis was put on physical appearance. Growing up I dressed how I wanted and didn’t care about makeup or anything because that’s not how my friends and I were raised, but that really hurt me when I went to public school. It’s really sad how much peer pressure public school kids put on eachother. In my homeschool group pretty much the only thing we cared about was how nice someone was... ..also I miss sleeping in ;-;

I homeschooled and I was considered to be “awkward” because I wasn’t afraid of talking to adults and I often connected to adults (or kids significantly older then me) better then kids my age I think it’s because I wasn’t exposed to so much ageism at a young age

Personally, I disagree about homeschoolers being socially awkward. It's a HUGE misconception! The majority of homeschoolers I knew, having been homeschooled myself, were wayyyyy more social then a lot of public schoolers I knew. Of course there are socially awkward homeschoolers out there, but there are plenty of socially awkward public schoolers too.

This video is an AWFUL representation of the homeschooling community. As a homeschooler myself in a large homeschooling-populated area (Northern Virginia, Loudoun County), I honestly could not find in my large homeschooling community a single person who would identify with any of these homeschoolers interviewed. Homeschooling does not make you an awkward person, or less prepared for life. If anything, homeschooling encourages us to get out there and to take responsibility for our choices. Overall, Buzzfeed represented homeschooling as the usual stereotype of a socially awkward, geeky, unprepared student, when in reality that homeschooling stereotype isn't that common.

I was home schooled my whole life and I'm so thankful for it. I have a learning disability that already made things difficult for me, I cant even begin to imagine what going to public school and having to learn at the same time and same pace as everyone else would have been like for me. I was able to stay on a subject until I really understood it.

I'd say homeschooling made me more of a social butterfly, though I was only homeschooled for middle school. It was an excellent learning opportunity though, I'm a freshman in public school now and I've taken a college class and my testing is decent. It depends on the person, but we're not all weird furries who get off to incest porn

Homeschooling in elementary school was the BEST. My mom was a phenomenal teacher, and I was able to learn thoroughly but then have extra time to just be a carefree child. I had so much more time to play outside, do sports, and enjoy my friends and family. I was always on sports teams and had plenty of friends and socialization through that. Homeschooling is unfortunately done wrong more than it is done right. I'm so thankful my mom was the best teacher! I graduated (public) high school with a 4.3 GPA, and I am currently a straight A student about to graduate from my 4 year university. People are always shocked to hear I was home schooled :)

I homeschool and know alot of people who do. I dont think we're socially awkward. Personally I believe everyone is born outgoing with confidence but get socially awkward after losing self confidence. And people usually lose self confidence from what others think of them mostly in schools. When your homeschooled you have no one to destroy that confidence in you. Basically im talking bullying.

I’m homeschooled and I really do love it!! Sometimes I wish I was in school to get the “experience” or whatever but most of the time I’m glad I’m homeschooled. Honestly everyone’s experience is different. I am never lonely and I’ve always been good at making friends. I never took classes inside my own home though, I always took them with other homeschoolers in a classroom setting which was great for me!! There are positives and negatives to private and public schooling, but everyone learns differently. You just have to find your pace and stick with it!!

People are always surprised when they find I'm homeschooled. Cause I'm pretty outgoing, as well as my sibling. Homeschooling doesn't make people weird, just like how public school doesn't make you normal. A person is what a person is. There are awkward and lonely people in public school just like their are outgoing bubbly people in homeschool

I was home schooled for my freshman year of high school and it was an online school and we did a virtually dissection for science. It was like a video game and very fun, and there was a student chat room so it was nice to have some sort of socializing.

My daughter is homeschooled and it is amazing. She is into dinosaurs right now so our theme is dinosaurs. she can literally name 20+ dinosaurs and attempt at making their distinctive noises or roars lol. Oh and she is 6.

I’ve been in homeschool and public school. In my personal experience I preferred public school. I love having a schedule to follow. Nothing unpredictable happens and that is very comforting. Homeschool for me was super chaotic. Also because I was with my sister and cousins that needed more help, my educational needs soon became neglected. When I went back into public school I realized I was super behind. I used to be at the top of my classes. I had to work my way back up and that was hard. Many people have positive homeschooling experiences but I never did. The only thing I enjoyed was that I could learn about the human brain as much as I wanted to.

In my experience of being homeschooled and in knowing homeschoolers this is so inaccurate. There are weird or socially awkward homeschoolers but like any group of people you can't generalize like that. Also there's more than one way to homeschool.

Interesting, my brothers and I were home schooled at different times in our development. I freaking loved it, we chilled out for a year and then I finished everything I needed for highschool when I was 15 and enrolled in college and started at 16. We were afforded an opportunity to get hungry for knowledge and to this day I still love to learn !

I was homeschooled for middle school and it was the most isolating, lonely experience of my life. I definitely learned a lot of interesting stuff, but i think that public school will get you just as good of an education. My situation was definitely different then most since i was pretty separated from most of society, because i was living in a boat in the middle of the ocean. But still, out of all the 7 schools i’ve been too homeschooling definitely was my least favorite.

Basically. Homeschooled kids get an advantage than most kids that go to public schools as 1. When you're homeschooled, you will have to get used to opening a book, and studying yourself - which will lead to you being more independent which is a good thing. 2. You get to study at your own pace, as lets say you're having problems with a specific topic with a school you can ask the teacher and they will help you but there are also other kids who won't know, so each child might not get enough time to understand the topic. I'm really happy buzzfeed made a video on this that isn't biased

I was homeschooled! My dad was in the Army so I definitely had great opportunities to stay on base and I had a lot of friends. So, I'm definitely not socially awkward. Homeschooling was actually pretty awesome because I got to being with my siblings, not be in school as long ( I got to eat when I wanted to ), and I got to go on plenty of field trips. I've gone to Washington, D.C., museums, zoos, and a lot of other places.

I was homeschooled until I started college at 14. To make sure that I stayed socially active I was heavily involved in theatre and martial arts, and also attended a homeschool co-op every week. The amount of freedom along with the ability to learn at your own pace make homeschooling a great option. I wouldn't have changed a thing!

i was home schooled for 2 years in high school because my district school wasnt working for me and i was very anxiety and very depressed and i needed schooling until we figured out what would work for me which in the end was a theraputic school my therapist reccommended. but for the time i was homeschool it was what i needed and i learned what i needed and how needed

Homeschooling is great. I took a few AP tests in my freshmen year (I am a sophomore) of highschool, and I got 4's and 5's, while practicing 3ish hours of college level violin concertos a day.

Homeschooled/Independent Studies. It's good but I haven't learned how to apply for scholarships or what I will pursue

I was homeschool on and off and part time through out my 4 years of high school, because of medical reasons. I personally loved being homeschooled, and I found that I was really able to excel . Make me wish I was homeschooled sooner.

I only went to 2months of kindergarten and the rest of the time in homeschool. I absolutely loved it! My mom initially put my brother and i in homeschool because she was very worried about safety in schools. I agree with others that everyones experience is different. And in order for homeschooling to be a success, you have to be self motivated or have a parent who really keeps you focused. I am absolutely socially awkward, but ive pretty much always been that way lol. There are also many different programs for homeschooling which can impact each persons experience greatly. For instance in K-12, its set up very much like public school with other students in ur class and ur taught by teachers online. I was taught by my mom until i went to a correspondence high school where they send u your assignments. At that point I became my own teacher essentially and i was able to graduate at 14, so that was another awesome plus lol. I also appreciated that i was able to learn things at my own pace. There's nothing wrong with public school, but i really loved my homeschooling experience 😁
