That's what nobody would teach us way back before the internet. Those little things that gave it that professional sound. I know why they wouldn't teach us that stuff because they wanted us to keep coming back. I learned more in 5 years on RU-vid than I did the previous 40. Thanks Tom.
My first and only guitar teacher used to ask me to pick a song to learn each week. I don’t think we ever learned the song I requested. I was 12 and into Nirvana who’d just come out so I asked to learn Teen Spirit, of course. He taught me Glenn Frey’s ‘The heat is on’.
I think it’s also the teachers to which we had access. Every town doesn’t have an Uncle Larry or an RJ Ronquillo. But in death, a member of Project Mayhem HAS a name. His name is Robert Paulson.
You are so authentic. That's why us hardcore guitar enthusiasts are here. You got knobs from Australia for an Ibanez bolt on Les Paul that's why we love you. You are the real deal
I've had "In Stereo" on constant rotation, "The Black Cloud" still gets me every time I hear it. The other day, I'm driving home, it's late afternoon, and storms are brewing. Up ahead, I see a big black cloud, about that time "The Black Cloud" starts playing. I'm feeling it but holding together OK. Then I crest the hill, and laid against that big black cloud is the most beautiful double rainbow I've ever seen. I had to pull over, it was a powerful moment. You guys made a great album. Thanks!
I missed this video a few months ago, but I'm glad to see it now. I just fell in love with a 1977 Ibanez LP and I'm glad to see you also have an appreciation for these fine guitars
Very cool. I am 62 and learned that long ago with stuff like Aerosmith and Ted Nugent, and so many bands. Very cool. ❤ Regards from South Central Indiana. USA Tim
Tom, great Video. You bring so much inspiration to us. Watching you play the F-Chord (not going Barre) in the Rick Beato Video... Man, this really changes my playing forever. Thank you so much.
I'm still very old school. Be humble, listen, watch, learn anything and everything anyone is willing to show you, especially the #1 session man in Nashville!! That sort of reminded me of Keef riffs, where he takes the low E string off of Micawber, and plays a bunch of their songs. Thanks Uncle L, 8) --gary
Larry, my second electric guitar was a bolt-on neck 'ron' burgundy Memphis Les Paul 'rendering'. I tried to convince the local guitar tech to add a Gibson bridge and tailpiece back in '82, and he advised me just get a better guitar so I sold it and decided to get an Ibanez St-50 set neck two humbucker Sunburst model. I changed my mind and bought a Gibson Firebrand 'The Paul' Deluxe in dazzling walnut over Mahogany finish. It kind of sounded like a walnut and I got rid of it in a couple years. What should have done is just bought a Japanese Squier Strat or tele from that era instead but hey, who knew? At least you still have your 79 Deluxe which is super cool and makes me happy every time you talk about it or show it on the channel we're only a couple years apart in age, and we came up during the same era of music. Don't ever think you don't reach people Tom, I guess maybe that's a pretty heavy thing to consider✌️😎
Tom: Thank you, What a Great lesson, we appreciate it, so full of nuances and techniques, and the story of your session work today and this week. Wishing you and your boys the greatest Memorial day weekend. You’re a great dad, the most important job I believe. You are all in on everything and we’re so fortunate to be able to spend time with you and your family on your channel. We have all the cds and they are our favorites to listen to. Thanks again,
Sometimes I just watch the openings of the class... one after another. Glad that there's hundreds of these videos already. You are one of the best rhythm players I ever saw. Very creative and musical.
Got my CD the other day. Been playing it in the car since i got it. Lovely stuff, lads. Thank you. My wife came into the room while I was watching this, and said you have a "cool face" and "a good movie voice". Might be a second line of work for you, Tom. Aloha.
Great as always Tom! A little bit of Hurts So Good vibe goin' on there. Totally loving In Stereo, so good! Can't wait to visit Nashville in August! Cheers from Down Under mate! 😎👍🎸
So great. The weird, Lydian, bendy, ringing bookends make the rockin' riffs sound even that much better, for me. Like the perfect, intriguing seasoning on a big, crude slab of meat. Uncle Larry, what an arranger! Also, it makes me realize that what I dig so much about his playing are the dark, weird surprises that are lurking around every corner as he plays. Thanks for the lesson, Unc!
Between having played a fair amount of Bad Company and Stones back in the day, I got pretty comfortable with some of those rhythmic devices. It’s great that you point them out, especially to some younger players. But I must admit you did a couple that I never used before that I’ll be trying out. Thanks Buk.
Very cool lesson. I always knew "something" about these chords (Rock and Roll Damnation, Crazy Train, Brown Sugar, etc.) but never looked at it like this. I think these are the sorts of chords that make things instantly cool.
Great to see you playing an old Ibanez, I have the set neck version of that guitar, a 1978, solid maple top, took me forever to find one, those super 70’s pickups are awesome.
holy shit Tom, I finally went and grabbed my guitar to fiddle on those variations of the root/4th stones vib thingy. Usually I just like to hear you rant but this time I actually learned something guitar playing wise.
Great info, thanks. I’ve played for decades but my ability to stretch my left pinkie finger with even the slightest amount of accuracy still eludes me. So thanks the pointer about sliding up to do those hammer ons. Definitely need to practice that.
Ha--I can say I knew SOME of those. Or I did them a bit differently. But the fake open G! Cool. Never tried that before. Awesome stuff. You are passing on info that is otherwise gradually being lost (and I'm an old dog too). Great stuff. Subscribed!
Growing up having Keef as a huge influence, you nailed a bunch of my playing style right there! Makes rhythm playing a lot more interesting IMO. That's not ALL I do, of course, but I can attribute my fairly strong sense of rhythm with some melody to him. Townshend was great at that as well.
Uncle Larry!!! That geet is SWEET Happy to catch one of your videos damn near live Thanks for a great channel man. Interesting, fun and i pick up a LOT of guitar things too 💪💪🤣 Cheers buddy
Nice job brother!❤ I also teach the Chuck Berry rhythm and slash D/A,A/E,C/G chords. And I agree 100%, it's not taught and you don't see it much online, thank you for pointing it out! GOD Bless! Rob Ransom
Hey Tom! Love the bends you do in this tune and at the gig with Guthrie the other night. Could you do a video showing us your thought process for those ringing bends? One I use occasionally is the minor 3rd bend up to the major 3rd while the root rings out, but that's it. Also, tagging off another comment, I really like what you and Guthrie did on the Clyde cover, would you show us some of what you were doing in that? Thanks Uncle Larry!
Damn bro, there you go, giving away all of my trade secrets. I had to learn all that shit by ear and months of hard work long before the internet. I used to be able to dazzle other guitar players with that top string pinky G chord, but now the whole world knows. Hell, I don't blame you though. I guess at some point we all want to give back, teach, and help the kids out for cryin out loud. I remember just how hard it was to learn Johnny B Goode as a kid. Bending that G string up into unison with the high E actually came to me in a dream. Shit you not. Nowadays the kids just google any lick they want which makes me wonder why I didn't have an Uncle Larry in my life. Thanks brother.
East Side Music had an old Greco bolt-on LP copy. I should have bought it because it played great. Also, the way the pickguard is mounted is just hilarious.
First time visiting via MusicRadar, immediately noticed what looks like beehive super drawers? Beekeepers notice this kind of stuff. Just finished stacking some on for the big June nectar.
Thanks always for these gold nuggets Larry. This is very much a la Brian May, as well If Im not mistaken. Cowboy Chord system at its finest Funny enough I was playing Maiden as when I was a 13yo and I found a couple licks like this. 😂😂 Truly valuable knowledge
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!! I got a notice my Baked Alaska CD was shipped!!! Just Yay!!! And I have to mess with you man…. You could make any Guitar sound great and you have caused me to appreciate and approach my guitars differently than ever before!! Two huge things you cause for me…. The Savvy Bridge on my 58JR and the XTS Mod GE7 has been the highlight of my new guitar journey….. now if I could send you a set of Dean Markley Blue Steels…… hahaha
