Warning for Homemade Deodorants in General: I asked a chemist friend of mine, who is a pharmacists, about what do if you get redness, rashing, or darking of skin ...and he said this: "If necessary the person needs to adjust the amount of baking soda and alter that pH level. Cut down the amount of the baking soda to less than 20% and use arrowroot powder or cut out the cornstarch and replace with the arrowroot powder until you get a homemade deodorant that works for your PH type.
Stop using if you see a redness, rash or other cracking or darkening of skin immediately until you rectify the PH level of your homemade cosmetics.
If you introduce liquids to your formula, be sure to add a broad spectrum preservative as well as this can cause an infection down the road as well. Wash out containers and sterilize each time you refill them. I hope this helps. I certainly have not heard anyone else have this issue... but I do know that some ppl have turned to arrowroot flour to get their best results. Work with it until you get what you like.
I also added 1/4 tsp. Vitamin 'E' oil to the mix-- and this last time, added about 1tbsp mango butter. Also used lime, coconut, vanilla, and butter extract for an awesome Coconut Lime Twist Scent! Loved these changes! This keeps me dry; no wet underarms! No odor! Washes out on my white T-shirts and doesn't stain my good clothes. It goes on fairly clear. I'm in construction during the hottest part of summer...and I'm menopausal...and it works for me for only .50 cents per 4 sticks!

I'm binge watching your how to videos and loving every minute of it! There's such a wealth of knowledge and money saving tips in each of them! Some of these methods are things that I remember my mother and grandmother teaching me, but I never used consistently and forgot all about, and some are brand new to me. I wish I had these to use when my children were little, but now I can pass them on to my kids and they'll hopefully implement them in times of need or on a regular basis to save money and live healthier. Tfs!!

Baking Soda does NOT contain Aluminum, baking powders do. So Arm and Hammer or even store brand is just fine. As for using cloves or cinnamon it may be a little caustic to the skin in some people. It would be much easier to just use essential oils than to infuse oil with herbs. Essential oils like Tea Tree, Thyme, etc are anti-bacterial and it only takes a few drops and you won't have to deal with washing out stains.

Hi Jane. My mistake has been to pour the final mix into jugs, without any water. The results were difficult to pour the soap in the washer....it wa a big thick blob...Now I will make a new batch using your recipe AND I will have the jugs filled to half with water, THEN I will add the soap mixture...

great video, the only thing I would say is not to use cooking/baking flavorings as they have alcohol in them and that would not feel good right after a shave, using an essential oil is better for those antibacterial properties.

Janie Pendleton so am I, I think it is from working in professional kitchens. No time to measure everything out. When my daughter ask how to make something I have to think about how much each ingredient will measure out to be :) and even then it's still an -ish measurement lol.
@OurLittleHomestead
@OurLittleHomestead 9 лет назад
lol I rarely touch a measuring spoon or cup! I just eyeball it. I pretty much know what will do what and how much will do it and how much will ruin it. I still cook for large crowds so that is another reason I have to 'can' or freeze in volume! I made enough spaghetti sauce last summer to last us years! LOL

Sierra: depends on the scent you like but I do like mango butter as well, or, you could just use your favorite body butter. You could even leave that step out if you like. But I find it helps soothe my armpits after shaving and keep them from chafing in the heat.

What I'm going to tell you has nothing to do with the video above. While watching the video, I Goggled the brand of extracts that you have and looked through their website. While looking through the extracts I thought of something good to use them in. You can make your own coffee creamers, either liquid or powdered. I don't know if you have thought of something like that or not, but I thought I tell you.

@OurLittleHomestead
@OurLittleHomestead 8 лет назад
Sounds like you put Baking soda with 'aluminum" in the ingredients. Read your baking soda box...I personally would quit using it until you figure out the issue...I've not had my armpits turn color at all and I'm really skin sensitive and that is why I started making my own. What scents or other ingredients do you add that is different from my recipe? Something isn't quite right with it. Scratching my head here!
@OurLittleHomestead

Okay, I called a chemist friend of mine who is a pharmisists...and he said this: "If necessary the person needs to adjust the amount of baking soda and alter that pH level.

I am not a sensitive skin person but I do have trouble with my arm pits. I have one that has an odor and one that does not. I thought it was so weird but have found that several people are this way. I used the same things that you had except the scents and I didn't use any. The odor is gone but then the skin turned dark. I will work with it since I have tried every thing on the market and nothing works. I will Keep in touch.....Thanks P.S. I didn't have the arrowroot either......I will order some.

@OurLittleHomestead
@OurLittleHomestead 9 лет назад
***** Hi! Yes, there is a great alternative; Switch to 'arrow root' powder mixed with byzantine clay (find that on amazon or ebay or even on barry farm foods online stores). Also, most DIY deodorants have way too much baking soda... if most ppl reduce the amount in recipe to a minute amount they get a better PH balance. Some say there is a detox period and that is why you burn or get a rash. NOPE! This is untrue. Using baking soda in a higher quantity in skin products produces bad results on skin. Try my recipe,but use arrow root powder and byzantine clay and see how that does. Both methods worked for me, hubby got a rash with the baking soda as well. I switched his fomula to the above and he's happy now. Says he loves it. I'm usually the skin sensitive one too. :P If you try this change over of my recipe, let us all know how it works for you. Blessings!
