Next up on our list of things to do on our #homestead is to begin #SitePreparation for the workshop. Grabbing our Stihl Farm Boss MS 271 chainsaw, we fell a few small trees that are in the footprint of the workshop. After that, we get to work laying out the footprint of the #workshop by putting up batter boards and running mason lines. We found the elevation for each of the piers and got them all marked out.

There are string line levels better suited for that and the string needs to be super tight where you can pluck it like that other Garcia did. Get a machine, any machine at all is better to have than none. Enjoy the day!

LOL! It's funny you say that because I was telling Erin the entire time, "I wish I still had my laser level OR line bubble level..." I used to have both when I had a house, but sold it with all my high-end tools back in 2017 when we started traveling full-time... Now, we have land and none of those tools. In the meantime, we're using the few tools we have because we need to save up for both building materials and tools. So thanks for watching and commenting! That helps us a ton! And if you want to contribute more, feel free to use our amazon links in the video description as that helps us out too at no extra expense to you! always keep wood off the ground or termites can get it. If your building a wood structure, maybe best on cement or cement pilings

Mullein is great for respiratory health. Make a tea. I would definitely get a few local region specific botany books for plant identification. Be very sure.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 2 года назад
OMG we have dried a ton of Mullein and have been making tea from it. The flavor is similar to mint tea with a natural sweetness to it. Very very good! And we did read that it is excellent for respiratory health! We're gathering local plant identification books. Recently a guy who has worked at one of the University Extension Offices for over 20 years here in the Ozarks reached out to us and told us we can bring anything to the Extension Office and their botanists will help us identify trees, plants, mushrooms, and test soil & water as well! So we're going to contact them to help out! Thanks for watching, Larry! We still have yet to check out your email but will do it soon! Got a ton of messages in the inbox and we're starting to get swamped! Not sure how big channels handle this, but we want to respond to everyone! LOL! For stuff like you're doing, get a $30 laser beam level from Amazon. Use it at dusk/ dark to be able to see the beam. You'll be able to mark posts in the corners dead nuts accurate.

Yeah dead nut is what we're shooting for! I've been looking at a few different ones on the dirty'ol Amazon... May have to pick one up at some point soon! Until then... I went primative using the bubble level. The whole time I was telling Erin, "I wish I had a laser level still... OR a line bubble level..." Because I used to have BOTH of those when I owned a house! Awesome job you two! Love your attitude and drive. I have that same model Stihl chainsaw and it's a quality one. For the stumps, drill some holes in the top and exposed root edge and pour in some Epsom salt. They will die off over the winter and will be easier to get out. Trying to dig them out just after cutting is a pain in the whoo-Ha!

If you've got poison Ivy, poison oak or poison sumac on your property, go buy some Zanfel! It's the only med that I'm aware of that actually keeps the oils from bonding to the skin and neutralizes it. Good stuff! Belongs in every first aid kit. Expensive though. Like $30.

If it's not to late use that wood that's been cut down and make a Cordwood building or something maybe a wellhouse I don't know don't just burn it. 😁 Hard wood is what you want for a Cordwood home/building.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 2 года назад
LOL! There is no wood shortage on our 4 acres! We are completely covered with red oak, white oak, hickory and TALL pines. We still have to positively identify the trees/flora on the land. However.... We are so happy you mentioned the "Cordwood" home build! We've been trying to remember what that type of building was called because we were talking with another guy about it the other day, as he's going to do the same thing! We definitely have enough wood for it! LOL! Thanks so much for contributing to the conversation here in the comments and for watching! We appreciate you! - Brian + Erin
@pamcolechadwell1302
@pamcolechadwell1302 2 года назад
@@BEAdventurePartners I love the cordwood homes and you can get wood from almost anywhere like bulldozed sites that are building stores and such, the wood is pretty much already dried out and cut. there is many cordwood home builders here on youtube you can look at or follow their builds. Pine trees are soft trees so you can't use them. Over here in Tennessee we don't even burn them in our woodstoves BC the sap messes up the woodstoves.
@pamcolechadwell1302

Leaves of three leave it be, that's poison ivy. If you have oak trees then you will have poison oak as well. Not on all the trees but some will have it growing around the tree. just look it up on the interweb so you know for sure. you guys need to get to know and chat with Josh & Erin " Wild Wonderful Off-Grid " If you don't already know them They're doing the same as Y'all wanna do.

That's a great phrase that we've come to know but some of the berry bushes have similar leaves! And I'm not sure if the poison ivy/oak/sumac in Texas is the same leaf shape as up here in The Ozarks. We're thinking of building a tiny house at some point. The building we're putting up right now is a workshop for carpentry & a separate sealed off area for a kitchen to process veggies and do canning. We're thinking of doing a market garden eventually, but right out of the gate we want a place to work on things that we're going to be selling :) It would be cool to incorporate a tiny house onto our Skoolie though! @BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 2 года назад
Woohoo!!! Keep on working on your bus! Yo got this! Originally we were going to travel around in our bus, but with the state of the world it only makes sense for us to hunker down and begin our journey to becoming food sovereign as much as possible. We had looked at quite a few different states and found the property we are on now. During our search we were looking for a place that is 1k ft above sea level, around 150 miles away from a BIG city, somewhere with abundant clean rivers and streams, in a latitude that would give us a variety of seasons and a longer growing season, a piece of land that has NO building restrictions and there are quite a few other reasons that we cannot post here. Our best advice is to make a list of what you want, then filter your searches by areas of the world that provides those things, then only search those areas. The Ozarks checked more of those boxes than anywhere else for us. Maybe we will be neighbors one day! Thanks for following along @Bethany May! - Brian + Erin

@@BEAdventurePartners Yes to all that you said!!! Those are great things to have on your list. I agree with you, re: the times we are living in...Very wise decision!!! I only worry about the tornadoes that happen there in the Ozarks. That's the only thing that is keeping me from pulling the trigger on land out there. I don't know how close they come to that area or how often, I just know they had some bad ones! Eek!! I hope to have my bus done before mid summer this year. I start working on it again in March. I could be too optimistic because things always take longer than you think they will, but I am eager to get it done and be living in it, even if it is not 100% done. I would be okay with that. I have all of the furring strips done, insulation done, sub floor done, wood stove installed, the kitchen cabinets painted and have everything I need to finish it besides a water heater and countertops. I just need to install it all, frame out walls, run the plumbing and electric for off-shore power hook-ups, then I am outta here!! I will be saving money for the solar after I move into the bus, but I would not mind finding land, be making payments on it in the meantime. We will see! One step at a time. I am glad it was your neighbor kids and not some strangers!! 😅 That would have been scary!! Congrats on your marriage!!! 🍾I am so excited to hear and see you tied the knot!!! I love Brian's vows! If only there were more men out there that got it right like Brian...😄🤷‍♀

Poison Ivy - leaves of three, let them be.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 2 года назад
@Randy Rainwater - Ok... We have totally heard that saying... BUT I think the wild berry bushes everywhere are also leaves of 3. I can identify those pretty good now, at least to my knowledge, when those plants sprout up they should be berries.. I just haven't seen poison ivy in real life, and had someone say... "Hey look this is poison ivy." I've been looking at pictures trying to study it. Haven't seen any yet. Hope we don't! :) That saying is super helpful though!

Glad to hear you like what we're up to! In today's day and age, the situations are pushing people to become more self-reliant & food sovereign. We're working towards that. It's a massive undertaking, but after building a Skoolie, we feel like we'll be able to adapt and overcome! Answer: Yes and no... We have a PO box that we can receive mail at, but don't have a physical address that allows for mail delivery because we're on a county road and the county won't give us a number to put a box on the county road. We're fine with that as we had a postmaster tell us that we don't want a physical address because... Well... I can't say the reason right here, but you may be able to think up the answer 😉 Thanks for always watching & participating in the comments @Kirk Truman ! - B+E
