This one was painful. Marine frigates vs marine frigates. Massed anti fighter corvettes (and the pulsars) against carriers while the bombers flew unsupported through fighter lines towards the same carriers. Flak gunships left in the frontlines to die alone.

"The difficulty spike in this mission is so steep." Meanwhile, not using gun platforms that could keep the shipyard clear while your ships hunt down the carriers as a pack instead of being picked apart piecemeal.

Homeworld calculates difficulty at the end of each mission, the more ships you have the harder the next mission will be. If you just scrape by then the next mission is actually made easier.

@@firebladenut The bigger deal is how you work your way through the mission. I played the campaign through and most of them were not that hard, and I took few losses. Your tactics matter more than what difficulty the system gives you. I captured a Vagyr destroyer in the first mission with one and that ship came with me for most of the rest of the game, because it gave me the extra help I needed to deal with most obstacles.

4-5 flak frigates murder 2 infiltrators in 30 seconds, pulsar corvettes buzz around shooting at fighters. Shak: 28:20 “how do you do this without a thousand capture frigates”. Me: facepalm.

I remember, that at my first time with this game, this mission was difficult to me (it was 15 years ago...) I started winning this mission after 3rd try. Because I've decided just to swarm Flaks :D And I must say, I love that effect, when a Flak swarm attacks and eats carriers. So, if I remember wel, at my first blind-playtrough adventure with Hw2 it was so: Mission2: not saved all 6 Bishops at first try, but won it. Mission3 - needed 3 attempts to win Mission9 - needed 2 attempts M12 - Thaddis Sabbah was a nightmare to me.... needed 5 attempts M15 - 2 attempts (bcoz curiosity lead me just to watch missiles entrance to atmosphere) :D

Few points of advice, here; -Pulsar gunships reign supreme for anti-corvette and anti-frigate; try to avoid using them against other stuff, but they can mangle capital ships if need be. -Flak frigates, gunships, and interceptors chew up enemy fighters beautifully, so keep them around your important stuff. -Bombers do 200% damage to subsystems, so for sniping facilities they're king. -Marine frigates can indeed capture anything frigate-sized or larger, but the campaign limitations prevent you from capturing production ships. Hint: mass them up in teams of 4 for speedy caps. -Try to group ships by function; gunships & interceptors, pulsars & bombers, that sort of thing; it helps hugely. -Just FYI, formations are generally not so good for fighters and corvettes, but work for keeping frigates and capships together to cover each other.

From memory, interceptors stay relevant through basically the whole game. You use em to take out the enemy bomber equivalents, which if you ignore will murder you. You can't depend on a single ship type, got keep mix.

I miss the way that in the original cutscenes (like that the start) you could sometimes hear other characters talking in the background. While the Vagyr leader was giving his ultimatum, you could hear the Higaran defenses marshaling to hold out.

The very first order you should have given was to move the Mothership close to the Shipyard. There it can provide much needed support in the fight over the Shipyard. When enemy carriers and shipyards show up in missions, use bombers to strip them of all subsystem modules at the first opportunity.

Vagyr have clearly superior strike crafts so even with the proper counter it takes longer, the only real hard counter agains a vagyr swarm is a combined fleet of flak and torpedo frigates. with a few corvettes/fighters to keeps em busy. Higaraan frigates and capitals generaly are better than their vagy counterpart though. Dat Higaraan Destroyer... Although the Vagyr Battlecruiser, while on paper less armed than the Higaraan one, is more adaptable. Vagyr BCs have better speed and firing angles while the Higaraan BC is a broadsider (think typical Astra Militarum warship), needs to be microed more especialy in a game with 3 axies. So definitly capture a Vagyr BC if you can. Edit: You can't capture production ships, but anything else in the Vagyr fleet is fair game. A combined fleet of Vagyr Strike craft and Higaraan capitals would be broken.

Alright I know it's been a while since you've played it Shack heh but dont worry so when you have ships in a group they tend to strike one target so have them break out of the group to attack multiple targets

The Library panic is all I can think of. His unit use was causing me to actively cringe and I haven’t played this game since the end original version. Upside it’s making me want to spare some time to try out he remaster I bought on reflex 2-3 years ago.

Shack is very good at always sounding like he knows 80-90% of what he's doing. In reality, he probably knows closer to 50%. That's still a hell of a lot better than SOME youtube gamers I could name...

I think using fighters and bombers would have been much more efficient to get the mission done. Bombers are great at killing frigates, moreso than pulsars, and fighters are much cheaper and faster than gunships or flak frigates.

Pulsars and their counterpart laser corvettes are the most op ships in this game. For this mission Just max out fighter capacity with fighter. Max out corvettes with pulsars. And you melt their entire fleet in No time at all

That formation at 6 mins worked because you brought a lot of firepower together. This sort of tactic works in warcraft 3 as well, where you clump guard towers together in a set of 6 and next to nothing takes them out.

Tips for this mission, carriers can not be capt, send in the bombers and take out the sub systems, send fighters to cover, and use corvets/frights to hold the shipyard. Your mother ship has guns, get them in the fight, nothing can put a dent in the mothership, and if its next to the shipyard than your new ships dont have to move to get into the fight.

Flak Frigate is better for dealing with enemy fighter than gunships, gunships is better against enemy convettes.

@@syrusalder7795 Not against the fighters, flak frigate shot cause damage in an small area to the fighters which will kill those fighters quicker than gunships. You can see how gunships were struggling against the fighters. Gunships better against corvettes and frigates.

Sorry to say this Captain, but I was laughing my pants off from start to finish with you attempting mission 3, I had known from past failures that this mission throws you in the deep end and seeing that your ships were dropping like flies was a breath of releef (first time wasn't all that different than yours, but the shipyard self destructed)

another free tip, after a certain point fighters becomes build only as needed and corvettes and frigates become your bread and butter.

You can capture things but it will count to ur fleet limits. The limits are specific to the class though... What im saying is u can capture their battlecruiser

It seems a lot of people don't know this, but marine frigates have a single anti frigate/capital ship turret. If you select the attack order after selecting the marine frigates and order attack on enemy frigates, instead of just right clicking on enemy ships, the marine frigates won't go and capture the ships, but just fire upon them... Its quite effective in small groups of focused fire, and will burn enemy frigates in under 5 seconds with 3-4 marine frigates. Also, pulsar corvettes may look pretty, but they are garbage against fighters, and average against capitals. Best to use them to screen larger ships (like the shipyard) from waves of corvettes and frigates. A defensive perimeter of pulsars, with gunship and interceptors support as they trickled in is easy mode, while supported bombers with interceptors and gunships is easy way to counter attack those carriers... and lastly, the chopping and changing targets a lot is probably what made this mission so hard for you. Flak frigates are barely needed here, but the extra dps is great because they are relatively fast firing, and can shred everything up to frigates when groups up and concentrating fire. Plus, they are cool as hell looking and sounding when firing. They are my second favourite ships in the game, after the Hiigaran Destroyers.

My strategy mostly: 1. Gunships and bombers in two or three groups (primary attack) 2. Flak and torpedo frigates in two or three groups (secondary attack) 3. The big boys with gun platforms (base of operations and resourcing) Most important mission is to control the resources and then attack capital ships. Rotate your primary attack groups for repairs.

That carrier at the end had already been 'captured' so was registered by the mission as 'no longer a threat' but the mission also dictated that the carrier would not be added to the fleet.

try setting your fighters etc on agressive stance... so if you have some around the mothership etc to repair they should target enemies without you going back and forth so much

Cap. If you can't micro your units please set them to aggressive so they auto engage ships. It will save you in the long run.

should have sent the marines asap to board the enemy carreirs, if they can't capture maybe they can disable which in effect takes those ships out of the fight. carreirs down no more enemy from those carriers to worry about. the marines then can do other things. otherwise can the marines be used for defensive boarding to reinforce the friendly station.

ok i know your not used to the game yet and tbh it was pretty painful watching so here some tips for this mission 1- Do not engage your fleet in formation since they all attack one target instead spreading the damage out. 2- Your marine frigate didn't capture the enemy carrier is because its was a objective target or you couldn't have one at the time. 3- it would be better to use your marine frigate to capture the enemy missile frigate and assault frigate. 4- here's an extra tips, when you trying to dock damaged squadron when enemy is nearby they will draw aggro since they are easier to hit, i have lost a couple of squadrons like that.

1:04 I'll never understand why do we see a mini Sajuuk ship. You can't capture those transport ships, and you can't capture a Vaygr infiltrator frigate if you already have 4 infiltration vessels (fleet maximum).

I really hope HM3 is expanded upon in a big way. Imagine SW:Empire at War, but Homeworld style with 3D combat, territory, shipyards to use and protect. Also, that mothership, either needs huge upgrades or be reassigned to a museum, where it should have been. There should be no logical reason to play HM3 with an outdated Mothership.

@@syrusalder7795 Thats like competing in a motorsports race with a 50 year old car. Sure, it'll do it's job and go around the track. But you could do much better with a more modern one. At this point in the lore AFAIK, they have gained some serious firepower and are the ones with the initiative. So it would be very stupid if you started out with an outdated, under-armed/armoured old mothership. It makes no sense whatsoever by any logic.

@@TESI303 I'm not saying its smart to keep using the iconic mothership, I'm just saying it works. How would you even go about improving it though? It has all the strengths of a carrier but even moreso, even if its speed is total ass. What would you replace it with? It has to have the same abilities as the Mothership othewise a lot of the smaller craft would have no way of travelling across missions without excessive amounts of carriers

@@syrusalder7795 1. A completely new design would be good to freshen things up aesthetically. 2. Since they now have Progenitor ships, a retrofitted/reverse-engineered beam cannon wouldn't be a bad idea. 3. Adding abilities and firepower but gating it through energy requirements and unlocks wouldn't be too bad of a game mechanic AFAIk like Deserts of Kharak Carriers. Power management/requirements for all kinds of abilities for a bad-ass mothership could be cool as part of the gameplay imo.

I've never been able to get past this mission. Like you, my infiltrators keep stopping, I think because they get attacked. I also get to a point where I mine everything and end up having zero resources to eat. After seeing your video though, I might reinstall, and try again. For the 15th or whatever time!! Ugh.

I think they might be stopping to prevent you from going over your cap, it seems that you can capture them until the cows come home, but once you hit your cap, you just disable them instead of capturing them

Ryan Christopher mass pulsars, use your own fighters to overwhelm the enemy strike craft. Ignore marine frigates except to keep one spare for a recapture.

You might need 2-3 Marine ships to take over a ship or you had the Marine ship on power to all weapons and ended up killing the crew of the ship you were trying to takeover

Wow I've never seen anyone get to the point where the shipyard would self destruct. You should have focused on destroying the infiltrator frigates instead of capturing them.

if you capture them, you can turn your marine frigates and newfound infiltrators onto the enemy assault frigates (which i reckon are far superior to the flak frigates) and nick a dozen or so of them in this mission Hell, I still have like 8 of them left and I'm on the 7th mission now, they serve you really well

Starlancer The main issue is that he was constantly overriding the orders so the marines would disengage then to try redo the dock. Add in a bunch of fighters zipping around messing with the AI pathing and there goes any hope of some free frigates.

@@syrusalder7795 I guess so, I honestly never found much use in capturing things in this campaign but maybe I'll give it a go at some point.

@@starlancer9740 One thing to note is that I think they changed how capturing works slightly in the sequel, since I get the impression you cannot capture a ship if it would result in you exceeding your capacity for that type, whereas in the first you could literally have hundreds of frigates if you so wished as far as I could tell, although I never exceeded 50.

Next one already? This is awesome. Any chance we might see HW: Emergency aswell? Although it isn't a remaster of course i personaly consider it still one of the best Homeworld titles.

Garkon Is that cataclysm? Love all of the homeworld titles but having s mothership with a big gun but was insanely vulnerable was one hell of an experience.

@@IRMentat Yeah, its Cataclysm, when they found the lost data and a build they could release on GoG they had to rename it because Blizzard has a copyright to Cataclysm.

Jack, you're being super conservative with your money. At the start of the level, you've got like 4000 RU's. You should be pumping out combat ships non-stop at first. Then, once you get low on RU's, start saving up again (or once you've achieved space superiority in the combat zone).

Yea shack I know you already have another episode of this but I thought the same thing on this mission that I thought I could take their carriers and stop the flow their cap ships and add them to my fleet like HW1 but in here that Dosent work you can't cap carriers you can cap frigates and others too but just not carriers its dumb but still

i belive in the campaine you can't cap capital ships untill the next misson. when your marine frig are done with capping in this run they have killed the crew and it will be disabled for your army to destoy it.

Man, this is the mission that I couldn't beat and I just gave up, like if the third mission is this hard, I stand no chance later. To be fair, I really only tried once or twice, but still.

Its not hard. Just dont send in stuff piecemeal. Spam interceptors and pulsars till your out off money or capped. And you nuke out carriers in No time.
