Honda Accord 2.2 CTDI speedometer not working P0502... I did a big mistake! Fault finding & repair. 

have had a 2007 accord for 12 years, the worst fault was the vsa light on, it would have been £1500 at honda. having now got slave a master cylinders of clutch to do. and will keep this repair you have just done, in mind. for when it happens. very good to know is that.

Well done L, you got to the bottom of it in the end, you still won..... A mistake that is easily enough made, unless you specialise in that particular model. I have never known washers to be required on CKP / Camshaft / Speed Output Sensors, except for the iCTDi and a couple of KIAs. It's simply done in order to save unnecessary costs of having a new Sensor manufactured which is 2mm shorter in length.

Auction cars always have some weird strange story. I'm guessing the odometer miles are actually higher than what's being displayed due to the speedometer not working for however long. That Honda guy was good, eish more people could be like this. You've helped plenty of us with your videos and I guess him helping you was just some of that good coming back to you. Good find . Can´t say I ever had an issue like that . I had my share of broken crank sensors that were too close to the flywheel . DIYers that changed them and regulated them too far in . Weird to put a washer under the sensor . Must be cheaper then making the sensor 2mm shorter

So does the washer just go under the bit where the bolt goes? No need for any extra washers over the silver bit. I've looked at the diagram as as you say has an o ring on there. So is that just the o ring that comes on them as standard? Cheers

Looks like honda made some changes on the sensor or the gearbox strange you have to put a washer to keep the sensor away from the moving parts welldone great job

Given that there was no washer between the sensor and the gearbox when you took it out, I suspect the old sensor was also a replacement and it was the cause of the initial problem in the first place.

thank you, very useful piece of information, the washer is obviously a spacer, (very important) surely it would be a point of focus on everything showing the sensor or describing its placement / installation. another fix it. I didn't see the engine light?

Happened the same to me with the original sensor. No idea how is this possible got longer so was touching the shaft inside the box...i thought something is loose inside the box but nothing i could see with a camera so i put washer too😂

Great video. What about the EML/MIL not showing. Are you going to fix it and do a separate video. It's horrible to find out the washer after you found the car like that. That means the original sensor has been removed before you received the car, meaning the washer was lost! Not really your fault, plus Honda should supply a washer with a new sensor with a warning.

Hi Thanks for your lovely video. I want to swop the speedometer for 2005 bmw 120d for a another second hand speedometer. My question is, to do that can I swop the EPROM from the old one to the new one so that the mileage and all other data will be transferred which will not need any programming? I might be wrong and I want your expertise on this please Cheers

I have the feeling that the warsher was later on added during the design phase when they found out the sensor is too long and they did not want to reproduce already delivered parts to the factory.

I'm a full time car mechanic and I have seen vehicles that have had the engine ecm chipped to turn the check engine light out even when there is a fault. It's very frustrating when diagnosing.

Just did same mistake, the washer must have landed on top of the sensor, not underneath 😀.

What scanner is that?

Dont beat yourself up. Anyone can make that mistake. Obviously someone forgot to put it back!

Hello LM Auto Repairs im asking this question because i see your quite the expert. have Fiat grande puntp 1.4 16V VVTI.... this problem is happening on hot or cold engine, car in neutral, 800 rpm good even idle engine purrs 99.9 percent perfect when i press accelerator pedal down by 15mm (checked with measuring tape) no change in rpm press by 1mm more engine rpm jumps to 1700 rpm with a bit of fluctuating on needle 50 ish rpm each side 1700. in order to reduce rpm i have to back off throttle the thickness of a sheet of paper to drop it 100 rpm if i back off 1mm goes back to idle. by backing off thickness of sheet of paper at a time i can bring it down slowly to 1000 rpm, but between 1000 rpm and 1500 rpm engine stutters like running out of petrol, and when i drive it in first or second gear between 1000 and 1500 ish rpm car surges/bucks like tapping on and off throttle.new Bosch throttle body 0nly few thousands miles on it came with car, i put new map sensor on. cant find any vacuum leaks. examined accelerator pedal carbon tracks look ok some wear checked with omh meter resistance changing on all tracks. what could be the cause, no engine light no codes using basic £30 obd2 scanner

Learning curve but if someone didn't put washer back then not entirely your fault you would do thought honda would of upgraded part with the space integrated in sensor

Stupid design. The spacer should be incorporated into the speed sensor as It's easily missed when you remove the old one and pull the bolt out - the spacer then drops onto the floor unknowingly !
