A fastener by fastener tutorial for testing, removing, and installing an ignition switch on a Honda Accord.
I cover how to cause an intermittent switch to act up, test it for continuity to verify it's faulty, and how to remove the cylinder assembly from the vehicle so the electrical switch can be removed.
Then I cover the 1990s to 2000s Honda ignition switch recalls and the special part numbers that go with them and reinstallation of the cylinder assembly to the vehicle.
The shear bolt diameter and thread pitch is M8 X 1.25.
Ignition Switch Recall Info:
Honda TSB Number 02-031
Vehicles affected:
1997 Accord (L4), 1998-1999 Accord (L4 and V6), 1998-2000 Civic, 1997-1999 CRV, 1997-2000 Odyssey, and 1997-1999 Prelude.

Your video has been one of the most informative and easy-to-follow tutorials I've found. I was convinced that my problem was the "relay", but now I'm thinking it may well be my "switch". Thanks for being so detailed for us beginner DIY viewers. Keep up the good work! .

Thanks very much for the post!! That tip on using the awl/punch to remove the shearhead security bolts was priceless & worked like a charm! Took me 10 mins to remove both. I had wasted lots of time trying to chisel a slot in the top so I could use a flathead to remove & had no luck at all.

Great instructional video! I just changed the ignition out on my son's 1995 Accord and because I didn't get the recall kit(I just bought the module on Ebay) when I worked the shearing screws out, I used my grinder and cutting blade to cut a slot in the top of the original screws. I was able to reuse them and secure them with a flat head screwdriver.

thank you for showing how to get the cut-away bolts to loosen to remove the ign. cyl key lock assembly from the collar. I watched the 1A auto video and they apparently had bolts that were not sheered off. So I went to the junk yard with an 8mm ratchet and phillips. I left a couple hours later almost destroying the entire car in a homicidal rage. Then I saw this video, returned to the junkyard with a hammer and awl and removed the assembly in 20 minutes.

Awesome video. Great detail. I really needed the video to understand that the steering lock has to fall into place when your putting everything back. In my 1999 Accord the unit was attached to the wiring. You simply follow the wires back underneath the dash and un-clip it. Everything else is pretty much exactly the same. Thanks for this!

Even though I no longer own a Honda, I found your video captivating and worth watching. I see that you used manual focus, excellent lighting, and a tripod for closeups, so you obviously have better than average knowledge of video production. I agree with your points about the shear bolts. I would make effort to get OEM replacments for those, since they are an important part of the anti-theft system.

OMG! Can't thank you ENOUGH! Especially for THE AWL TRICK! YEA!!! You've no idea how many people, including so-called professionals, I've spoken to about removing this unit. You're definitely gifted in this area. Thanks!!!

The part # for the shear bolts he speaks of is 35102-SV4-003.They're not available at auto parts stores though,dealer only,so I went to Home Depot, got two 8m x1.25 x 16 mm(length) allen head bolts(like he mentions) and ground a couple mils off the end to get them down to 14 mm length.Use a 6 mm L shaped allen wrench to install and they work great. Excellent tutorial,my young friend.Thanks for the help.

Dude... of all the video 'tutorials’ online, this is no doubt the BEST. You not only deliver a thorough step-by-step instruction, but offer a clear & simple explanation for each step as well, while keeping in mind the noob-layman viewer, such as myself. Logical, cerebral & no bullshit - a rare type indeed. Although this video was posted nearly 7yrs ago, my 92 Prelude sure doesn't mind - seeing as how I finally managed to get her fixed while also retaining useful knowledge unrelated to my original issue (something the newer, yet convoluted, tutorials online didn't accomplish)....Even better is the fact that I was able to troubleshoot AND FIX a problem that I didn't think to check! Thanks to you, both my lock cylinder AND my ignition switch have been replaced - my `lude loves you for it.... as do I.... 😉I hope your head didn't explode after all that praise, haha.

Thank You!! Just had an old friend come to visit and her 94 Accord would not keep running once the ignition switch rolled back to the RUN position. It would keep running if I carefully let the key only roll back a small amount, just enough to disengage the starter but then die if I let it completely roll back to RUN. Was going to take it to a shop but your video saved the day !! thanks again. !!!

Everything, from the explanations to the video quality was superb. I have a 91 Accord with about 370,00 km on the clock, and it's started stalling while driving. Don't know if the ignition switch is the problem, but with your diagnostic tips it's a good place to start, as I'm just finding out how common this issue is for Hondas. Mario Tello Back probe the black / yellow wire on the distributor connector with a sewing needle and place the other probe on ground. With the key in the on position you should have battery voltage if you don't check the ignition switch and the main relay.

Thanks for a great video, this fixed my issue. For the benefit of others, my 96 Accord had 250,000 miles on it. I had the same problem, which developed during the unusual cold winter weather. Initial symptom: on random instances it looked like engine was misfiring a bit when driving at freeway speeds: tach would bounce down and then recover. The next progression: On random occurrences, (more often at night when it was colder) Car would crank fine, but not start - as if there was no spark. Car would start and run fine after one or two "non-starts." Next progression: car actually died while being driven. I would hear a "click" from behind the radio area and the speedo and tach needles would drop to zero. In a few seconds, the engine would die (again as if there was no spark), then without doing anything, it would come back to life and resume driving as normal. At this point the failures when trying to start the car (especially at night when it was colder) began to get really bad. It would start once in about 20 tries. I did try a main relay replacement first. That was before I viewed this video and replaced the ignition switch. You just have to replace the electrical module, not the wires nor the metal lock assembly. See 15:38 in the video above. I bought mine at the dealer, which was about $65, versus online price of $30~40. I was also able to pick up two shear bolts. Don't forget to buy those. Thanks again for an excellent video.

Thanks for the video, got the ignition switch changed. Couldnt find that size bolt but came up with an idea that worked great if you want to add it to your video. I used some quick dry epoxy (I purchased at harbor freight for 1.99) and glued a 1/2 nut to the top of the bolt. Let it set over night and installed the next day. got decent torque before the epoxy/nut snapped loose, then used the awl to give it a couple of more tightening taps. Worked great!

Checked and cleaned all battery terminals (good). Checked connections to the solenoid (good). Will do a voltage drop test later, but I am seriously suspecting the starter at this point. Sometimes it turns on right away, and other times, I could be waiting for several minutes before getting a crank instead of a click. I tapped the starter with a wrench a few times when it was giving me problems, then it started right away. I am suspecting build-up or corrosion inside the starter. Will keep posted

The owner had the switch replaced (not by a Honda Dealer) and after i took ownership i realized (by accident) that the car would stay running after the key was removed if the headlights were on. Turn off the headlights and the car shut off. i suspect incorrect wiring by the repair shop. Any hints would be appreciated. keep it up

Check the main relay for cracked solder joints first while it could be the ignition switch a cool down time needed to restart the vehicle usually indicates cracked solder joints on this relay. A marginal ignition switch will allow an instant restart in most cases.

The current draw of the solenoid on these vehicles is around 4.3 to 4.7 amps. Most momentary contact switches are rated in the milliamp range. You need a 5 amp rated relay to interrupt the start wire hook the switched contacts across the cut start wire. The momentary switch should be rated for the relays coil current and can supply a switched power or ground to the coil to activate the relay and allow the vehicle to start.

i just replaced the ignition switch on my 1999 honda accord EX. mine wasn't recalled so i got one from Advance A. it didn't come with new shear bolts so i thought i was gonna get off easy like the recall letter said for other 1999 accords and only have to remove 2 screws. not to be. that third screw was nearly impossible to find then take out. took forever. TIP: remove the other two screws first, lie on your back under the steering wheel, wiggle the switch cover and feel/find the third screw.

Excellent Video!!! Although I love my Acura 1997 CL, I am very annoyed that I have already had this part replaced twice by Nalley Acura. The 1st time they did it as a recall, the second time I paid just over $150 - when the same thing happened at around 60K at 158K miles. Now I am at 181K (only 30K miles later) and having to replace it again. What's up with Honda that they cant fix the design issue. There is a newer part which you have mentioned - but now I am having to do it again. Shame on Honda for not resolving this design issue. Thanks to you for making the video and I will pay $40 for the part and do it myself. Thanks again.
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 8 лет назад
+Mark Kellerman My theory is there is too much current flowing through the run contacts of the switch this generates heat inside the switch which shortens the life of the contacts. The fix is to modify the ignition switch wiring harness and splice a relay into the circuit so when in the ON position the switch powers a low current relay coil which supplies the components on the run circuit instead of running the high current through the switch directly. This takes the high current load (heat) off the ignition switch contacts and puts that load on the relay contacts which are designed to make and break high currents. This is more expensive and would require more labor time than replacing the switch.
@daveycrockett9447
@daveycrockett9447 8 лет назад
+Bushougoma Hey - I completely agree with you. But I would add that Honda should recognize this as well and correct the design flaw so that someone can expect to have at least 100K miles rather than 30K before having to replace the part again. Anyways - you are a lifesaver with your post. Good stuff and really appreciate you sharing your expertise.
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 8 лет назад
Mark Kellerman The unfortunate reality is recalls don't make the manufacturer any money. So they want to perform them as quickly and inexpensively as possible.
@daveycrockett9447
@daveycrockett9447 8 лет назад
+Bushougoma - absolutely - you are very correct and now that I am resolving it myself - I see that they even rushed it by putting on regular hex bolts to fasten to the steering column (guess they anticipated on having to revisit it) - which negates the whole purpose of providing some anti-theft measures. So much for paying the dealership and expecting them to do the job correctly to code.
@daveycrockett9447
@daveycrockett9447 8 лет назад
+Bushougoma -but keep in mind - they only did it for free the first time it happened - when the same problem which was under recall - had to be done again - i paid them around $150 and then they used hex bolts rather than using the shear bolts which provide for anti-theft

that'll help the next guy, but even knowing where that screw is doesnt make it easy to get out. re: link, you're probably referring to the recall bulletin, but it doesn't show that third screw well. finally figured out how to reattach the steering wheel cover. i couldn't get the bottom to line up right. thought the ignition switch wires were in the way. turns out there's two black pins in the front jutting out from the steering column area that need to fit into two holes in the bottom cover.

So the engine will continue running no problem once it's warmed up? Is the idle abnormally low when the engine is cold? The coolant temperature controlled fast idle valve should be open to significantly raise the idle on a cold engine.

Although I couldn't fix this on my own it's a great video! I bought a '98 Honda off of a guy yesterday & it cuts off & comes right back on while I'm driving it. He said it's never done that before & he's had it for years. Hard to believe, right? I couldn't get my money back of course so here I am 24 hours later & money lost. Would the same test work on my year? After countless amounts of research I'm pretty sure it's the switch. If you barely touch the key it'll turn out of place. There's also a green key light flashing like it's the security mode. It's stopped twice both times starting right back up. Pretty scary while you're in traffic. I hope you can help me. I feel so taken advantage of.

Busho, was hoping if you could answer this for me. I have a 1997 Accord EXL Manual and am having issues with the car bucking alot when I let off the accelerator, or lightly press it in lower gears. I've hear that a problem with the EGR system could cause this, what do you think? The car also has an intermittent rough idle, I can feel it shudder when the cooling fans come on, is this normal? I'm not sure what might be causing it, and want to fix it badly.

Well that was a very vital piece of info. It's the ignition switch the run contacts are bad.

i have a 93 accord and the switch looks a little different . the only other video i can find is awful compared to yours and says I have to disable the airbags and remove the steering wheel. I s that true or can I follow your basic directions ? the switch is connected to the wiring harness on mine. Your diagnostic test worked great to verify the problem

The guy that tried to start my ‘97 did it a little quicker. I’m pretty sure minimal equipment was used during his brief attempt at the repair. Just one big screwdriver to break the housing off and then a cheap pocket knife to troubleshoot the ignition issue. I’m assuming the knife tip broke when he went to the start position as he left that tool on the passenger side floor. I’m not sure why but this mechanic also broke my window and took my registration but he left the license plates on the car? He must have got another urgent call because it looked like he left in a hurry. At least he didn’t bill me for the after hours service though. All I can say is, you get what you pay for. I ended up buying a new ignition, column housing, window, etc. and fixed it myself.

Question: I can't get my 7-pin connection harness off... I'm pushing the tab towards the connector and nothing seems to get it off. Any tips? Thanks!

i considered that but the video said it might be difficult to find screws with the proper thread, thickness, length. wanted to mention, my model accord didn't have the two screws attaching the top of the steering wheel cover to the bottom half; four clips instead. i didn't know that and was looking for the additional screws. broke off one of the clips. no big deal, but am now having trouble reinstalling the cover. can't recall if the ignition switch threads thru the slot in the cover or not.

Great video!!!! Easy to follow and clear details. I do have a question about my particular vehicle. I have a 2003 Honda Odessey with key sticking in ignition than finally turning to start. I can immediately start mine but it idles rough and will die only if I give it gas. If I don't give gas it will stay running but if I put it in gear it will die. I have to let it warm up for 10 minutes before I can put it in drive and drive it. Then if I turn engine off wherever I go and if its more than 40 minutes I have to wait 10 minutes again before putting it in drive. (Sometimes it may still die on me when I slow down). I tried doing a test like in your video but was unable to locate the main relay (I think it is under the hood) nothing but small fuses under dash. What would this problem be and would you have a video that can guide me? Thanks.

Sounds like the idle air control valve is stuck. I take it the engine idle is abnormally low when cold? This vehicle uses a rotary type IAC valve that has a tendency to stick and causes anything from a no start unless you hold the throttle open (valve stuck near closed) to a low idle (valve stuck partially open). It's bolted to the throttle body and has a 3 pin connector on it. You remove it from the throttle body then remove the screws securing the electrical portion to the aluminum butterfly valve assembly. Spray the shaft and the insides with carb cleaner and move the butterfly back and forth until it moves freely then reassemble.

Any advice on replacing the ignition switch on a 98 accord LX automatic? The ignition switch wires that is currently installed was modified. It has additional wires crimped/connected to it. I believe the wires are for the after market car alarm.
