In this video, I show you how to change the automatic transmission fluid on a 1999 Honda Accord with a V6 engine (J-series). These vary slightly from a four cylinder engine. This procedure should be similar for 1998-2002 models with a V6 engine (but exact fluid amounts may vary from year to year). The exact vehicle in this video is a 1999 Honda Accord EX V6.
This procedure is for V6 Accords with conventional automatic transmissions (NOT CVT). Accords with 4 cylinders, manual transmissions or CVTs will have a different procedure than the one shown on this video.

Best video on changing transmission fluid in a Honda Accord V6 on RU-vid. Had my 1998 done in September 2019 by shop who rebuilt trans in 2016. After multiple fluid level checks found it was 3/8" above full mark. I went back to shop and was told not to worry about the overfill as it was a myth. I found out that they use after market fluid and not Honda DW-1. After the rebuild this fluid turned black and the shift quality was appalling. Had 2 drain and fills done in 2018 which helped but there was an engine vibration. Found that front motor mount broken when replacing the timing belt in Sept 2019. Not confident I'm up to changing it myself so going to Dealer to have a drain and fill. Thanks for all your videos.

Transmission fluid changes are very important for the early 2000 Honda Accords particularly the 6 cylinder EX. Transmission failure has abeen a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda extended the tranmsission warrant to 93 months/109 k miles for the 2000-2001 Accord as a class action lawsuit settlement but others model years are SOL. So, if you were unlucky enough to buy one change your transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. A lot cheaper than replacing the old transmission.

I have a 98 Accord V6 with a rebuilt transmission done it 2016. I learned the shop refilled it with Dexron fluid. I'd like to switch to Honda DW1 as recommended. It's not slipping but the shift quality could be better. I have been doing a drain and fill once a year at the shop. Would it be logical to have the Dealer do a drain and fill and repeat this once a year or just live with it? I don't feel up to doing 3 in a row myself but would like to use the DW1. Thanks for your videos they are the best!

So I have have question. When I change the oil I will run a quart through to flush out any anything in the engine before I put the drain plug back on. I've heard mechanics say to change transition oil could losses some debris from the transmission and cause more problems. My question is, would it hurt to run a quart of fluid thru it and flush loose debris out before putting the plug back in, hurt the transmission? Note...I have a 2000 Honda accord ex 3.0.

@eljeffe8806
@eljeffe8806 10 месяцев назад
The 3rd gen (2004-2008) Acura TL, 3.2L V6 has an ATF filter. It is in a round chamber built into the top of the transmission case between the fill plug and the left wheelwell. There is a black tube attached to the cap of the chamber to return fluid to the transmission. Check that area of your Honda V6. Yes change that also at least every 50k miles. Mine was not changed since new and at 160K and 19-years old, the filter was filthy and falling apart. Do a search on YT for those videos before you poke around under your hood and remove the air cleaner box.

Great job on both video and commenting and thanks for torque specs. I have a 98 sedan v6 automatic and for 4 years have been experiencing tranny issue which is annoying. When vehicle shifts up from 1 to 2 it grabs slightly with small delay sometimes. Winter seems more obvious grab feel. Does not do that when slowing down. I did check 3 filters in transmission shift solenoid that sits below and near the battery and has the 2 connectors. I was hoping those filters were clogged. No luck, clean as a whistle. I have changed tranny fluid a couple of times. There was some metal parts on bolt but nothing what I would call significant. I noticed if sitting idle and when shifting the transmission manually thru gears it clunks, like a jolt when shifting into 2 either way from 3 or 1. The others are pretty smooth. Any insight? Do you think it could be a gear solenoid or torque solenoid that is outside the transmission or do you think its internal? It started about 225k and now have about 250k. Thanks, Michael

@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 3 года назад
I can't tell you what to do but if I bought a car like that I generally will do one drain and fill and re-access how it is doing. Older transmissions can always have issues when a new service is performed but Hondas are a bit different in that only a portion of the fluid is changed so it is less of a shock to the system.
@trouts4444
@trouts4444 4 года назад
A 6 cylinder has about 7 quarts of fluid. Only about three quarts can be drained through the plug. If you drain three quarts and replace three you have diluted the 7 quarts by a little less than half so have of the old transmission fluid left in the transmission. You have to do a 3 quart drain three times to reduce the old fluid enough to be considered a "full change" of transmission fluid.
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 4 года назад
The V6 in this video holds 7.6 US quarts to be exact. 3 drain and fills will get most of the old ATF out, anything after that and is draining mostly new fluid. I usually mention that 3 drain and fills are needed if you want to get most of the fluid out, I guess maybe I didn't say it in this video. That being said, I usually recommend 1 drain and fill every 30,000 miles to keep these Hondas going. Thanks for the input!
@trouts4444
@trouts4444 4 года назад
Is it knowng that the fluid above the 3 lower quarts that drained is fluid that retains the qualities of new transmission fluid. I'm not arguing with you but it seems to me that a three quart change is only a change by about half versus leaving good fluid at the top in. A fluid sitting for a long time is called tanking which you probably know. Tanking used motor oil for months does not work . Tanking linseed oil does work and done for months and years at times. I had my trans fluid changed this week. I drove in and within 10 minutes the guy was draining the fluid. I doubt that time was long enough to let the fluid separate into 3 bad quarts at the bottom and the remaining fluid fine. Besides the remaining fluid is not in the same pool as the 3 quarts. It does not drain as it is in different locations that can't drain.

So to check this transmission properly, the car has to have been driven, but the engine haaas to be off to check correct? Cause im being told to check it the engine has to be running while youre pulling the dipstick.. so do i check it with the engine warmed and off? Or leave it on while checking

I see this happen on so many videos ... Yes, please put chocks fore and aft to each rear wheel when jacking up the front of the car ... but do NOT apply the hand brake until the car is fully lifted. Otherwise you will be rotating the rear wheels with the brake fully engaged. Not good. Please apply the brake after the car is up and release it prior to lowering the car. Then re-apply the brake prior to removing the chocks. Otherwise, great video! (Also, I think you mean 'Convex', not Concave.)

Honda made lifetime trans filters for 6th gen. You’ll have to drop tranny and crack case to even get to it. Not even worth changing IMO.

Yes the ATF is checked the same way on most Hondas with conventional automatic transmission including a 2004 Civic. Engine warmed up to operating temp, level ground, shut car off and check 60-90 seconds after shutting off engine.

Great Video Big Dog. I have a 2014 Accord Sport coming up on 60K miles. I believe it is due for transmission fluid change. Is replacing transmission fluid for a CVT doable for a person who hasn’t done their own maintenance or should i let my local honda dealership do it? Thanks for your response in advance!

The service procedure on many Honda CVTs isn't really any easier or harder than what I showed in this video, just different fluid and slightly different steps.

i got a 2002 Honda accord v6 i have a longer transmission fluid dipstick its got one hole near the bottom end and another near it, and another hole all the way near the end of the handle. how do i check the level in this case? thanks
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 лет назад
Some models have 2 dots (holes) near bottom of ATF dipstick instead of hash lines (ATF dipsticks should have a yellow handle). The holes are only about 1/3 inch apart. The ATF level should be between those two holes after the vehicle is warmed up and then turned off for approx. 90 seconds. Ignore the hole in the dipstick that is a few inches up closer to the seal.

I was wandering if you are really getting all the old oil by only letting it come to a drip wouldn't there be some left in the trans cooler lines some in the torque converter or is that little bit even matter?
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 6 лет назад
It does not matter. The entire transmission holds over 7 quarts of fluid, so this procedure does not even get half of it out. This is why regular maintenance is important.

I replaced my transmission with a junk yard trans. My only issue is I managed to strip the inside of the drain bolt. I’ve since heated it and tried pliers and cutting it a little to use a hammer and chisel. I cannot get this drain plug off. Would you have suggestions?
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 лет назад
That is not fun, and any of the techniques I mention can do damage to the transmission. It is very tight in there but sometimes you can get a pipe wrench on outside of bolt and use a cheater bar for leverage to get them off (pipe wrenches are good at grabbing round surfaces). Damaged bolt/nut removal sockets made for removing damaged fasteners can sometimes fit in there too. I would take a center punch and (gently) tap the center of bolt with hammer to try and break bond between bolt and transmission. Another technique (which you appear to have tried) is an air or regular hammer and some kind of chisel or possibly a center punch to catch edge of bolt and work it loose (but this option is risking and could easily damage the transmission if not careful!). If those fail then drilling/EZ out/tapping are usually what follows. Good luck!

Great video. My question is about changing the trans fluid on an Accord V6 with 117,000 Miles without knowing whether or not it has ever been changed. Is it ok to change brown fluid that has never been changed? I always thought that would be great for it but I've read different.
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 2 года назад
It is possible to cause problems if it has never been serviced, but that is more common on older cars where ALL of the ATF was changed at service. For these Hondas, only about 1/3 of the fluid (give or take a little) is changed during a normal service and I have not seen any issues servicing the ATF on Hondas that have gone for a long time without service. Thanks for the comment!

How often should you service your transmission on your Honda?
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 6 лет назад
The best information is in the owner's manual of course and you can't go wrong with that. That being said, I recommend at least one drain and fill every 30,000 miles.

@zocho09 4 года назад
You have 232000 miles on your Honda accord.Did you rebuild your transmission?My 2001 Honda accord ex v6 has 156 000 miles.Since transmission fluid is cheap and many accords had transmission problems, i change the transmission fluid every 15000 miles. So far the transmission is fine. i am the original owner and i am happy that this model is still OK. I think I am riding on borrowed time I will be happy if it can last couple of more years.
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 4 года назад
That is not my vehicle but the owner has had it for a long time and has taken very good care of it. Changing the transmission fluid goes a long way in keeping these older Hondas on the road. There is a good chance you can go at least another 100,000 miles by taking care of it.

Another good video 👍 Is it necessary to do the flush 3 times ? Like the honda manual book says? Thanks again
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 лет назад
Is it necessary? That is up for debate. If I buy a used car that has not been taken care of I will do one drain and fill and access the fluid. If it needs it done again I will typically wait until the next oil change and then I will do it again and re-access. If the car is new, or I know the history, I do one drain and fill every 30,000 miles. Thanks for the comment!
