*Please Note*, this was recorded before our family crisis.
Hi, my friend Pete invited me to take his 2023 Honda CB500X out for a ride, as if funds ever became available, I quite fancy one as a stablemate for my Royal Enfield Classic 350. Mainly for going on much longer rides, with ease, and maybe a bit of touring.
It was a windy day, and the screen was playing havoc with the camera's microphone, causing distortion, which I am really sorry about, but as my bike doesn't have a screen, I have no way of trialling it before going out. Now I have a good idea what I need to do !
I hope you enjoy it non the less.
Thanks for watching.

The CB500X is a very underrated bike and will do just about everything and it sounds like you really enjoyed the ride. I have only ridden the CL500 variant of that engine and found it to be very easy to get on with .On the subject of bigger bikes. I do enjoy bigger bikes and they feel a lot more stable at high speeds, of course the downside in the weight. In saying that, my NT1100 feels not that much heavier than the NC750X so the modern designs really make a difference. My sweet spot for a bike is the NC750x and would be good to see you get a run out on one in the future to see what you think of it.

Morning Alex, I really wouldn’t want to pick up one of the big bikes if it fell over 😉. I need to find a dealer where I can spend a few hours trying different bikes. The nearest is about 50 miles away, since they moved it from Lancaster 🤬. I will try and get a ride on the NC750X and NX500 sometime. Cheers

Thanks Bruce. With so many speed camera’s, other vehicles, crap roads, then there is the weight of those mega tourers, you wouldn’t want to try and pick one up, I would be more than happy with the little 500X. Cheers

6 years, 10 countries and 89,000 miles on my CB500X, including an 11,000 miler across the US and TAT. Still smile when i walk in the garage. Zero real problems or mechanical issues, apart from the cush drive bearing in the rear wheel failing at about 50 something thousand miles. Loads of farkles available for the CB, to be added as and when budget allows. The NX is a CB with newer body styling. So, IMO, you can't go wrong with the NX. OR, you could pick up a used CB for a price that's within your budget. Though i'd suggest a 2019 and up.

Thank you. I have heard of some really big mileages on the 500X, with no serious issues. The last incarnation is definitely the one to go for, with some pretty decent prices at the moment. Thanks again.

A really capable machine. Have always liked the look, but stupidly dismissed it because of the bhp. However, the silver lining to that, was when I tested the Interceptor & found 40 odd bhp was quite acceptable for my needs. Just coming up to 5 years with my Interceptor & still loving every minute riding it.

Morning Martin, I admit to sometimes missing my Interceptor, they are a cracking bike. The CB500X is just so easy, and un intimidating to ride, but still a hoot when you want to wind it on a bit. Thanks

Hi Ian, it looks very capable and I considered one when I started looking for a smaller bike, I missed out on a good used on at Mitchells by a couple of weeks. On your other point, if we only bought our bikes based on what we need then we'd all have just one cheap small bike, or even a scooter. Ride whatever puts a smile on your face, we're all helping to keep motorcycling and the motorcycle industry going. Personally I've enjoyed the many tens of thousands of miles I've ridden on my RTs, GSs, K1600 and other big bikes. Although I could have carried tools and computer equipment the length and breadth of The UK all year round on a smaller bike, as my trip on Bobby proved, I was a lot busier then and it wouldn't have been at all time or cost efficient from a business point of view. Also, when you've ridden through a few winter storms you come to appreciate the extra stability and weather protection a big bike provides. Cheers, Mick

Done many happy miles on various forms of CB500 as an instructor and they are great bikes. The adventure style bikes do give the rider a great view around them, along with wide bars and good ergonomics. You gave a good and fair appraisal of the bike as you found it on your test ride. It’s true, screens generate just noise if your lucky and if your not lucky you get turbulence as well; just something that has got to be put up with I suppose. Totally agree about the likes of GS’s etc; as a former owner of several of the genre I can confirm that the owners perception that such a large capacity motorcycle is a requirement is totally in the riders head. Enjoyed the video and that exhaust did sound nice. Mind how you go bud

Having the 500 Rebel, for my short leggies, very capable engine in these bikes. I believe each model in the 500 range, has the ecu tweaked slightly for each model. Now I got the seat done, should provide a more comfortable ride, from now on. Glad you enjoyed the run out.😊

Morning Ian, the 500X is a cracking machine I was tempted a couple of years ago but went with the V storm instead because I mainly ride two up but really anything in the 500/650 range is easier to live with than the bigger ones and they have enough power, for what you are after the 500X would be perfect and such a different ride to Clementine that they would complement each other, all the best buddy 👍

Glad enjoyed the 500X mate 🤙🏼 it’s a gem of a bike which surpasses the sum of its parts. Simple effective economical and if you’re in the mood will hoon with the best of them. Re the screen: I ride with ear plugs (only on long journeys) and find the screen brilliant just the right height and literally puts you in a little bubble of neutral air at all speeds. It’s my first bike with a screen and now I wonder how I coped now without one for 40odd years! Looking forward to more vids and roll on summer 😊

The screen is one of the reasons why I changed to the naked F. The X was just too uninvolving and I only commuted it, because I found it too boring to ride at the weekends. My new F is better formy needs. Ride safe.

@jimmyjam8795 I could work with the screen, as I have seen many “fixes”, and tbh I didn’t feel any buffeting (unlike that bloody Tracer 900), it was just noisy. The riding position on the X will probably suit my knackered body for longer rides. It’s all pie in the sky stuff though, as I haven’t got any spare dosh at present 🙄. We can dream though 😂 Cheers

Hi Ian It's Pete. I just saw your review on the Honda CB500X, it's seems a pretty decent bike, and of course you have got Honda reliability and parts back up. I meant to say to you last time, I purchased a bike many decades ago from Roger in Crewe, it was a Yamaha DT125 sport, I part exchanged a brand new only a week old Yamaha YB100, I went into the shop and asked Roger if he was interested in a part ex against the DT and when he came out to have a look he couldn't believe it was only a week old, as it worked out the new year was about to arrive in his store, so the part ex worked out that I didn't really lose any money on my bike, because the new DT bike had gone up so we did the deal. If I remember right I'm sure that Roger wears glasses and was of slim build reminded me a bit of side little from little and large 🤣🤣🤣, look forward to seeing your review of the TRK and what you think of the bike be honest 😂😂 Anyway , catch you again later Pete

Hi Pete, you will have to sign up to RU-vid yourself, save having to say “it’s Pete” 😂, I don’t mind 😉 Interesting story, I don’t actually remember them being Yamaha dealers 🤔. Roger was slim, but he has turned into a chunky monkey now, a bit like me 🫣😂. I will let you watch the TRK, before telling you which I would go for 😉, it might be out Friday, but if we are still down here, I might leave it till Monday. Cheers

They are a nice competent bike, Ian. I tried one shortly before I bought my 750 Breva and found that the CB500X's 830mm seat height was just a little too tall for my comfort and that the 199 kg kerb weight was carried a bit high for me. I'd certainly agree with your perspective on humongous adv-tourers.

Even on motorways I just chill out in 1st lane at 60 ish. Been to France twice on mz which unfortunately is 300mile of mway. But I find when I did it on a 1000 bmw doing 70/80 I was more knackered. I really like these bikes Ian, we were looking at them in Bill Smith's new showroom at Chester this weekend , they're a really neat compact bike,.. as for needing huge adventure bikes, I don't think they're really a requirement, more an ego thing. I've got a Vstrom 650 and me and my missus have done over 60,000 miles on it two up loaded with camping gear and its done it all easily, the only thing I'd knock it on are the brakes, they're a bit spongy, the CB500X brakes have more feel and are a lot better . @ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield 3 месяца назад
That’s a bit of a tough question, I have only done a walk round on the new Himi 450, but looking at RU-vid vids coming out of India, I think the Himi is more off road biased than on road. I can’t see reliability being an issue, as apart from my Speedo not liking hot sun (doesn’t happen that often here) on my Classic 350, and the original battery being crap, I haven’t had any other issues….”where is some wood to touch 😂”. My old Interceptor 650 was faultless. When I had a look round the Himi 450, I was impressed with the build quality ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DwKNSwINqYA.htmlsi=X9fHMlonXJVBv7r2 , but as for road manners, I can’t comment. The CB500X is tried and tested, and is basically the same bike which has been out for years. Excellent dealership network is also a major positive, if a tad expensive. That said, servicing costs on the RE’s can mount up, due to short service intervals. It is really for these reasons, that I would probably go for the Honda if I ever win the lottery 🙄😂. Hope this helps, rest assured, as soon as I can get a ride on the Himi 450, I will, and now I have ridden the CB500X, it will be a good (road biased) comparison as there are only a few cc and hp difference.

You would expect quite a big drop in new prices of the outgoing model, but that’s not really the case. Yes they are a bit more attractive, but I would probably go with a barely used one, which has most of the accessories already fitted 😉 £5500 would get a low mileage (under 2k) example, with most things you want, like centre stand/12v etc. cheers

Great first impression ride Ian. I haven’t ridden the later generation 500’s but I have done many thousands of miles on the earlier CB500 twins and CBF500 twins too as an instructor and they are superb real world motorcycles. I remember back in the late 70’s early 80’s that august journal, MCS used to say there is no point in a motorcycle over 500cc. I believe motorcyclists are victims of the marketing people. They have managed to convince everyone that we actually need their grotesquely overpriced, overweight and overrated large capacity motorcycles; furthermore the marketing people have done a great job convincing everyone that the above are actually desirable. They had convinced me too, till I saw sense and realised; no,I don’t require a motorcycle that big. We were in Switzerland just before Covid. The high roads and passes were thick with GS’s and KTM’s etc. What made me laugh was a German lady riding a 20odd year old Suzuki GS500. (For those that don’t know the Suzuki is a pure road going 500cc twin). Riding exactly the same passes and high roads that some guys need a 1200/1300cc bike for. So just let them moan if they want Ian. A nice ride;,good mixture of roads, pertinent comments, great banter; job done bud.

@@ianhughesroyalenfield Hello Ian and Thanks for a lovely review on the bike that’s being delivered to me tomorrow,it’s music to my ears knowing someone like you with a great wealth of motorcycle knowledge can recommend such a machine. I was hanging on for a New ‘Himmie’ 450 but got fed up waiting for Royal Enfield’s delivery delay dates & monthly set backs,I did managed to get a refund on the deposit payed and then went to plan ‘B’ I managed to find one of the last NOS CB500X for an amazing price of £6000 on the road so as you can tell I’m a very happy bunny,Keep up the amazing work my friend & all the very best.

To be honest, I think you have made the right choice. All the reviews coming out of India on the Himi, are showing it is more off road focused, so we would really need to have a good on road ride to see what it's like. I really like the CB500X, does everything I would need. Hopefully you will keep watching my vids, despite me not having a 500X 😉😎

How did you find the gearbox/clutch? Mines a bit clunky,? Otherwise, it a great bike.
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield 7 дней назад
I think the term would be “positive”. It goes into gear with a definite clunk before setting off, but on the road, I think it was fine. I have ridden a few other bikes since then, but I don’t recall it being noticeable. I have certainly ridden bikes with worse gearboxes. The Clutch was supremely light, probably one of the lightest clutches I have ever experienced on a motorcycle. Hope this helps.

@ronlysons6750 7 дней назад
@@ianhughesroyalenfield Thanks Ian, I appreciate your response. My only other experience of a bike gearbox was on my CB300R. That was really light, yet still positive. I’ve only had it day, so I think more time is needed on the bike. Loving it so far.
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield 7 дней назад
@ronlysons6750 tbh, I instantly loved the ride on my mates bike. It has a fair few miles on the clock, and ridden quite hard (my mate isn’t a slow rider). Is yours new ? Maybe it will “loosen” up with a few more miles on it.
@ronlysons6750
@ronlysons6750 7 дней назад
@@ianhughesroyalenfield I'm 70 and only past my test in Feb, so I am slow rider, I was I keen cyclist up to about this time last year but my knees are getting old and playing me up. I bought the CB300R just to ride the lanes I used to ride on my bicycle, and it was fine, but you needed to keep the revs up. The 500 Hornet is heavier, but is more assured round the bends and I feel much more confident when cornering. The CB300R could get a bit skittish at times, especially with the roads the way they are at the moment. I don't know if it's the tyres what, but it is better. It's perfect for me, I've been out for 30 mins today and I think the gearbox will be fine. It's not as light as the CB300R, but no problem getting the gears. The bike is 3 months old with 1900 miles on the clock. The difference between this and the CB300 is like going from say a1000cc Vauxhall Corsa to. 2000cc Mondeo. Most of the time you still go the same speed, but the riding/driving experience is much better.

@ianhughesroyalenfield 3 месяца назад
Well, Pete has wound the rear shock up a bit, and as mentioned, it felt absolutely fine to me. I rode some pretty rough roads on this ride (aren’t they all nowadays 🙄), and it was wonderful. I have a dodgy lower back, and didn’t find any discomfort whatsoever. It’s road manners through the twisties were “bloody brilliant”. The front suspension on the newer models (late 2021 onwards) are upside down Showa units, with twin discs. I haven’t tried the previous version, (the one you tried), so can’t comment, but I thoroughly enjoyed this ride, and wish funds were available to buy one. Cheers
