Still need to tie the 2 sides of the a arm mounts together in the front and the very rear link bars. Any force on the one side you want directly to push against the other and transfer to the ground on the other side. The way it is now with those log unsupported bars will start to bow over time as the suspension works. That brace on the shock hoops might look cool bent but your basically adding an unneeded failure point to it. The force on it will be up and in basically trying to force it down and out. Use a straight tubes to tie things together. Bends add weakness to tubes. On your steering it's easier to setup if you mount your steering on the backside of the spindles. Otherwise in order to get the correct angles normally the tabs have to be pushed out to where the wheel wants to be. On the backside you are bringing the tabs in towards the buggy away from the tires. Also protects the tie rods somewhat more. That top windshield bar will fold at that bend if you ever get it on the side. I also still hope you plan on drilling those bolts and putting castle nuts on those heims holding the spindles on. Those bolts on the bottom will try to loosen up and being upside down will fall out tucking the wheel up under the buggy ripping the arms off.
@shaynegadsden

Your first point is a sway bar and they aren't used on long travel off road suspension as it defeats the purpose of the suspension and limits it's movement

@@shaynegadsden That's not what he's talking about. What he's talking about is the upper A-arm mounting points. There should be a bar between them to keep the upper arms from pushing inward when he G-outs his suspension. There's already one on the front of the lower arms. There should be 2 across the upper front arms, and 1 across the upper rear arm.

When you put the hardware in the front hubs. Make sure to torque it to factory S10 specs. That is what sets the preload on the tapered roller bearings.

Sweet build mate. About the engine - ballpark the total weight of the buggy (+driver+passenger), work out the HP-per-ton, compare that ratio to a medium sports car (150-200 hp/t) or a crappy 4cyl hatchback (100 hp/t) - As long as you're near the 120-150hp/t mark (if your CBR600rr is 110hp, you've got ~2000lbs to play with) - Keep it near that and it'll be quick... you just need to worry about gearing, as that'll get you the torque.

@omenofseverah
@omenofseverah 5 лет назад
100% agree. Power to weight ratio is not going to be there. High revving small cc motor, makes no power till the upper register. Forced induction would solve this debacle surely. Otherwise something along the lines of a v4 would be sweet. Something with a more linear curve. Torque utilization is key. Maybe he's got a trick up his sleeve. We'll see.

@@sizzlek5269 I easily go over 40mph with my Yerf dog 3203 kart with a build 196cc. Power to weight ratio is the key. A 600cc sport bike is under 400 lbs, this thing looks at least twice that weight... It will be slow trust me.

You're learning kid! After this build you will have a pretty good grasp on how to build an offroad buggy. You're going to need stops for your steering and either stops or fall out straps for your suspension when it's topped out (fully extended). You don't want the shocks topping out, it will ruin them. You are DEFINITELY going to need a steering stabilizer unless you're fond of broken wrists. Talk to King for your spring rate and valving when it's all done. If you give them your buggy weight, suspension configuration and the type of driving you're going to be doing they should be able to give you baseline spring rates and valving and clicker adjustments. All these things should have been taken into account long before you started buying parts or building anything but it is what it is now. You've built that buggy a little bigger than that motor will probably be able to REALLY scream with but if you gear it right it will probably be ok you just won't have a lot of top end speed, maybe 50-60 instead of 70-80 MPH but that's still pretty fast for off road. Hopefully the clutch will hold but you will almost definitely have to put the heaviest duty clutch and springs int that are available. I would think it should still pull pretty good out of the hole because of low gearing... Next best choice would probably be a 1000+ cc motor especially something like a Hayabusa, I think they put out something like 190 HP stock. It might be a little too pricey for you, don't know. Next option would be a good ol straight 4 cyl like a toyota 22R(?) They put out like 120 HP stock. Then you could mod it a bit for probably 150 HP naturally aspirated or throw a mild turbo setup on it to easily and reliably get 200 HP out of it. A V8 (like an LS) for that buggy is out of the question, way too big. Mayb on your next one you could do a full size buggy with long travel and LS power. You'd probably need 25k minimum to build something like that though. That said, when your done with this build I think you will have a nice little long travel buggy that will suck up some serious bumps,whoops and jumps. Look forward to seeing it all done!

You will probably need custom drive shafts. Extended, sleeved and welded shafts will work on a lightweight, low powered buggy. Welded drivetrain components are strong only when you have a large enough diameter to bear the load, ie, on a 4' diameter tailshaft. On a small diameter shaft there simply isn't enough weld to hold. But hey, give it a shot, it probably won't wreck anything expensive if it lets go. Keep up the good work!
@Crewsy
@Crewsy 5 лет назад
2 things about your front end. Pull your outer tie rod mounts inwards to align them with the 2 heim joints you’re using for ball joints and then that same angle needs to be copied on your inner heim joints to eliminate bump steer. All that work to eliminate bump steer and your scrub radius is still so far off that when one tire hits a tree root it will probably rip the steering wheel out of your hands. Turn the steering wheel with the tires on the ground. The tires ideally should pivot on one point for zero scrub radius. Your tires will have to travel (roll) in a semicircle to turn left and right.

In my previous experience of moving semi-heavy wheeled vehicles (aka 50s tractors) without them running, standing on the rear tire and "log rolling" it to move the vehicle is the easiest and least damaging way to move a vehicle. Have also done this on an old pickup truck. Harder with the bed covering the wheel wells but still works pretty well.

Yes, chevy hubs are pressed together, but indefinitely needs a bolt. I was outvoted working on a 99 chevy Tahoe about putting the cv axles back through, so they put everything back together again. We went for the test ride left my warehouse and got up to the lovely speed of 45mph before all hell broke loose making us do a 360 and being s.o.l. Passenger side front shot out first which I was riding shotgun, then the driver side went. It'll hold till there's legit power and weight. Ripped the whole front out fresh ball joints, sway bar, steering, and the whole brake lines were gone when they went. Ps after that my buddies finally realized to listen to me when we're working on anything from dirt bikes to trucks. Lol

For 4wd the front axle and nut is what puts the "preload" on the unit bearings. You'll need to come up with a bolt of some sort to tighten up in there. If you look at the newer trucks from all makes the front unit bearings are the same for 2wd and 4wd the 2wd uses a bolt assembly to preload the bearings.

To minimize your bump steer, make your tie rods (center to center of each heim joint) as long as the difference in length between the heim joints of your upper and lower A-arms. For example: if your lower arm is 24" long, and your upper arm is 22" long, make your tie rods 23" long. If your tie rods are too long, you'll get bump out. If they are too short, you'll get bump in. Good luck, and keep on welding.
