Remember, motorcyle engines make most of their power in mid to higher RPM ranges. You need to rev them out a lot to get them to go. Your gearing is probably fine, you just need to commit with more RPM.

I agree I feel like the wheel speed at idle is good with the 12t swap . U do kinda gotta jump on it and go just cuz it's heavy

Yup. It'll rip once it hits 7-8k. 12 tooth will be perfect. I'd just take it easy and keep an eye on if its still smoking. This build is friggen awesome.

He made a miscalculation with his torque on the engine. He said it was in nM and not lb/ft, which is a huge difference. It has 94nm of torque, which equates to only about 69lb/ft of torque. He needs deeper gearing.
@snapfish89

Yeah, I was thinking even engine mods wouldn't help the take off. I'd just be easy on take off and let her eat up in the rpms.
@ActivityPhoto

I totally agree. The gearing actually sounds a little short. He is not used to having to rev and engine to make it go. I think the redline on that engine is about 11000, so until he gets it out of the yard and lets it go, he shouldn't make anymore gearing changes. But as he mentioned that thing weighs a ton or at least half a ton, he really needs to learn how to build using lighter and less material.

You could push the axial sprocket out to make room and put a Jack shaft behind the axle. But the powerband on that motor is at higher rpm so you could try to redline it out of the gate but then again low end gearing will help to save the clutch with such a heavy vehicle. So maybe try the 10 tooth I think you will just need to mess with it but everything is there to make it work you just need to tinker with it and it will work the way you envisioned. Excellent job bro you really accomplished your goal of a high end looking top quality store bought machine.

@firstnamelastnameisallowed7943
@firstnamelastnameisallowed7943 4 года назад
Most of the comments are things that people think you are doing wrong or along those lines anyway. I wanted to say that your project here is super badass!! Any type of custom vehicle will have its issues to be worked out no matter how much you plan and try and get it on the first try. That's just the nature of the beast really. Everyone saying rev it out to make it go, I'm sure hes aware of this but that is not very good for the clutch and other drivetrain components so having the proper setup IS the fix for it not more gas! Even though more gas is the fun way, it's not the right way!! Having all the different front sprockets will give you a ton of gear options for different places you can go, like more trail stuff having a lower ratio or if going to the dunes when u can go flat out with a bit higher ratio. Plus you can play around with different tires and or sizes and still be able to gear it how u want to that sweet spot because yes people the tire size changes the overall ratio it will have so options are always good to have!! I really dig this buggy man cant wait to see it ripping around some day here soon!!!

@@calholli That thing never hit any respectable RPM's... it's a race engine designed to hit 10-11k rpm, he probably didn't hit half that. If he did, it was when he was in his front yard and the wheels spun. He's driving this like it's a go cart and it's not. That's the actual issue. He doesn't know how to take advantage of this engines power band. For reference, this thing makes peak torque at 8k rpm and peak HP at 10k. It's also worth noting that this is a 30-35 year old engine, it may just be tired.

He'll figure it out as he drives it more, but what he really needs is to let someone who knows about sports bikes get in and drive it... so He will see what it's capable of.. It's already plenty low geared... maybe too low.. You can tell by how slow it is going as the engine revs... these bikes will do up to 80mph in first gear, because thats how tall the gearing is....... Thoughts: -You can run your chain to a sprocket on an idler shaft, it looks like you have enough space behind the engine and above the axle for it. Use that to gear down and send a second chain back to your sprocket on the axle. This will give you many options on gearing and also the space to mount yet another sprocket on the idler and add a electric motor for reverse. You will of course have to bump out either the sprocket on the engine or the sprocket on the axle so that the chains can live beside each other. If you bump out the sprocket on the engine you can fab a bracket and bearing so that the force put out on the drive sprocket (drive sprocket shaft at this point) is supported from both sides and not just the bearing in the engine case. Considering how much torque the engine will be putting out to move that big boy this wouldn't be a bad idea. -Size, man that thing is BIG! Don't get me wrong, I like that, and it gives you a platform to graduate to a larger powertrain. A lot of buggies that size and weight use an ecotec or acura engine and a Modeola transaxle. Those (the transaxle) are REALLY expensive though, so my thought was that if the bike engine turns out to not be enough, just plug and play a fwd engine out of a Cobalt SS or something of the like and order some super strength CV axles. -It's your baby. These ideas are just what went through my head while watching, but ultimately it's already awesome and you've done an amazing job! Thanks for the cool vid, it's inspiring.

It doesn't make any power at 4000 rpm. Look at the power curve. Max power near 10,000 rpm. Even babying it on the street in a bike you would shift it at like 7000+ rpm

Exactly.. stop idle-ing around in the yard... It's already crazy low geared.. He just has to learn how to drive it better....... It's a heavy tank, there's no getting around that. acceleration is never gonna be there like he wants. I bet it will still fly though.. plenty fast enough.

@jaredbennett9568

Very cool. Good job. It drives like a boat because it's designed for long travel. If you want more travel, you will inherently have more body roll. If you want less body roll, you will need to reduce travel. If you don't follow these positive ralationships you will end up with weird behavior, terrible stability and ride quality, and jacking forces throwing you around. But if you want to make it a little more stable on smooth surfaces I would suggest raising front ride height 2 inches and raising the rear about 1 inch. Also could use stronger springs. If those dampers are adjustable, stiffen them just a bit, particularly the front. If you plan on driving any kind of rough terrain, don't add sway bars; that would make it bouncy. It's a buggy. Learn how to drive it like one. Can't wait to see this thing hit the trails!

Wait awhile before you worry about the engine smoke, give it a few heat cycles and maybe try some high mileage engine oil. Gearing problem, pick-up or order a copy of Boats & harbors. A lot of adds in there that apply to millions of things. Look for a reduction gear 2nd hand lots of good deals as well. If nothing else you did a awesome job on the frame work. Best of luck finding the fix.👍👍
