Well the description says it all. We have this Honda Civic 1.7 that got towed in with a "crank no start." It was an easy mystery to solve though...

Takes me back a few years ago. They pack everything in such a tight space. Glad to see you didn’t have the antilock brake D block behind the washer fill. My 2002 with 238k miles had something get into the main pulley, tore the time cover to pieces and gasket slipped the timing belt off. Bent 4 valves, and I was reliving my adventure of doing that very job watching your video. Of course I’m old school so no fancy gadgets just the standard knowledge of sounds and mechanical sense. Great videos!

I bought a 04 civic ex with 130k with broken timing belt for $500. The body and interior was immaculate!! I just bought a jdm engine for $550, a gasket kit for about $100, and a timing belt/water pump kit for $70. After all said and done, I had a running car for around $1300. Still have it 4 years/80k miles later!

Great diagnostics. That Civic is definitely an interference engine. Looks like those pistons kissed the valves for sure. A lot of the Civics, Accords, Preludes are interference engines. Its a bad day when a Honda timing belt breaks. Best option for your customer is a different completely rebuilt head $240-$300 , $250 head gasket set with bolts, belt, tensioner, water pump etc. Thats if he can salvaged the pistons, in some cases you can unless they have a hole. But he has to do it his self DIY. My daughter just did a head gasket on this same engine 1.7L the video will be out soon. Great work South Main you handle your content like a real boss, God Bless.

hxtr timing chains also stretch and skip teeth. Most people think timing chains are the be all end all, they aren’t. They are better than Belts but with newer cars they have sides and guides. It’s not like the old 350 motors with a chain and gears only. Still have some of the same belt problems.

I bet the timing belt shredded partially, jumped time, but kept spinning the cams out of time to cause the carnage. FUBAR! The most bulletproof t-belt engine that I've come across is the Toy-oater 3.4L V6 ('96 to '04 4-Runner, Tacoma). Non-interference and a wide beefy belt. Have a customer with 200k on his original belt on an '04 Tacoma...runs like new :)

Excellent vid, shows why you should follow the manufacturer's scheduled service intervals (not the dealers). With proper maintenance that's easily a 225-300k mile cars. I assumed Honda 4 cylinders were all chain driven, I was wrong. I would have had you fix it, still cheaper than a replacement at that time and you would have done the job right.

Send it over Ivan, he's doing a valve job on a Prizm. Broke a timing belt on a 73 Hondo Civic. Was doubling clutching as I was downshifting from 4th to second and just as I was coming out of the curve hit the redline and that was all she wrote. Had my dad help me tow her back home and before the night was over, I had a new belt on her and was ready for some more fun with the Hondo. Love that car, great on gas and because she was a rust bucket I could park her anywhere and not worry about door dings.

I had a 2003 with the 2.4 4 cylinder. That engine was interference fit and at about 240,000km she let go and bent the no.2 intake valve. No head or piston damage so a whack of new parts and off she goes ! Regardless of OEM recommendations I've always been confident of belts and chains until about 200,000km ( 120,00 miles ? ) IMO at 200 ( 120 ) change it just do it regardless of what the book says.

Arrr shucks. Would have been EPIC to see another multi part video series on doing the head on a Honda engine. The RAV4 and EJ253 vids were epic. If it was a manual transmission it might have been worth getting an engine from a scrap yard, but chances are the transmission doesn't have much life left in it at 165k and probably not a whole load of maintenance. I prefer Toyota's. But my sister has whats sold in the US as a Honda fit. Its literally had nothing go wrong with it in 9 years/70,000 miles besides some judder in the CVT that a fluid change fixed. Its a strange engine, 1.4 petrol, SOHC and its chain driven. Its actually as efficient as a diesel if you drive it properly. Gotta love Asian vehicles.

Honda recommends 90,000 for a timing belt change, which is when my neighbor had his done at the dealer, but they screwed up the job and didn't even use a Honda timing belt, the tensioner spring had come off and was wedged between the crank pulley and the crank sensor, thank goodness the engine wasn't damaged, I replaced everything with genuine Honda parts and it ran great, they used a dayco belt that wasn't even the right width.

Yeah. I had that happen on a 2004 Aveo LS at about 120K. The damage to the engine was minor despite me being on the gas at the time (had it floored going about 70 on the highway, trying to get around a truck). In my case, it was a pulley that broke. My dad and I did the job, and it went surprisingly well. Kicked up and ran for a while. The bottom end of the motor went about 20,000 miles later due to oil pressure issues that developed with that motor. Sold it for a grand and got the Taurus a few months later.

Great video. I wonder if that timing belt was original. My 2009 Civic has a timing chain and I was told that it doesn't need to be serviced unless it stretches. It already has 150,000 miles and still runs like new.

I had a very close customer of mine (the father of my life long best friend who died of a heart attack 3 days past his 22nd birthday) who had this happen. It was the cars second engine which was from a junkyard with pretty low miles and he had it installed by a shop that is known by car people to be a bit shady... the original engine was burning oil HORRIBLY at over 300k but the car was and still is MINT for being in NY. So they had a used engine put in and less than 3 months later it shut off going down the road on Ralph. So he called me on the side of the road, I came out, and it didn't sound like it had ZERO compression like your example, but I ended up pulling the distributor cap, had him crank it, and no spiny spiny of the cam driven dizzy... the thing that REALLY gets me is he had paid for a Timing belt kit to be installed on that engine since the engine was already out of the car so it would be CAKE.. but it was a dry cracked, shredded, HONDA belt that broke... like 6 wrecked valves when I pulled the head... LUCKILY, a friend of mine had an identical motor with a rod knock he pulled out of a car and sold me the head off it. Had it resurfaced and pressure checked, slapped on Ralphs bottom end, and it's still going strong 4 years later....

You can get by with irregular oil changes on a cam in-block motors OHV, and belt driven OHC. Chain driven OHC not so much. Yes you have to change a belt (before it breaks!), buts it cheaper long term, even with diligent oil changes than replacing chains and adjusters IMO, more likely to stay on the road and quieter.

I bought an 99 Acura TL with a busted timing belt for $400 last year. Definitely hit valves. Car was obviously abused when I started looking deeper. Original belt and it had 185k miles. Decided that the engine was not healthy enough to keep so I bought a replacement engine with supposedly 86k miles for $800. Runs like a dream now but its become a money pit due to the previous abuse. Recently found out that someone took out SRS, TCS, and ABS bulbs from the cluster. All those lights were on when I put bulbs in. So it was a deathtrap. Hopefully it's an easy fix. Moral of the story is ask a lot more questions if you are about to buy a car that doesn't run and has a bad battery. Those dash lights are important.

There are some issues that are not covered by youtube mechanics. One technique is to damage the ECU or computer of the vehicle by giving it electrical shocks through cigarette lighter connection or any other such point. Trying to remove the electrical connections (like relay) of ECU or computer, wait for a few minutes and then put back the connections works in such cases, supposing that computer has survived the shocks.

Every time I hear of somebody scrapping a car because the repair is a little over the resale they get themselves into something that costs far more money to keep and run.
@dtrrtd774
@dtrrtd774 8 лет назад
The resale is low because people consider cars more for status than they do for the transportation appliance aspect. It would be certainly cheaper to put in another $2k into it than $20k for a new replacement, but it wouldn't have any snazzy.
@bertgrau9246

@Robert Slackware Sir, that is so true. Many don't think about the added cost of higher insurance. When obama came up with cash for clunkers, and said people need to buy a car that gets better gas mileage, I figured if my old Dodge gets 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway it would take a lot of miles at 30 mpg to cover the cost of insurance, and the cost of a new vehicle. I will just keep my old Dodge, and Cadillac. The caddy gets bad gas mileage but I enjoy driving it. It's a 76 coup de Ville nice ride
@ScreamingAirborne
@ScreamingAirborne 4 года назад
DTR RTD that’s what I was thinking when Eric said that the customer was going to scrap it. I would snatch that car for $500, work on the engine myself and then drive it till it couldn’t anymore. It would be cheaper just to dish out the 2k rather than dish out 20k over 4 years plus interest.

I lost a timing belt prematurely (I'd already had it replaced once and it broke early) on my first car: an orange Ford EXP from '82. No scalloped pistons on that baby.. We were on our way to the St. Louis airport started uphill on a turn ramp transitioning interstates and heard a pop, RPMs went to nothing and clackety, clackety, clack as the pistons slammed into the valves. I paid to have the top end repaired and 9 months later the crankshaft broke. Paid to have that fixed and a year later it was overheating with a bad radiator. Replaced that and about a week later it was stolen and driven to Manhattan Island and left double parked with a broken window and some new body dents. Told them to keep it at that point... My wife told me, "I think God took that piece of junk away from you before it disassembled around on the highway because you were too stubborn to do it yourself..." HAHAHA She always was a smart one.
@brentowen9480
@brentowen9480 5 лет назад
Pretty sure it is an interference engine, but that also means the interference can be between the valves, ie dohc one pulley slips ex whacks int. SOCH here, usually no damage.

I like what you said. So I'm installing a piston cuz I had a bearing take a poop in cylinder 3. Well since replacing said new piston and getting it to timing it's still not working. But how am I gonna check things after I try things unless I turn it over to see if it starts. So kudos that was nice and made me feel better about feeling stupid as dumb as that is to say haha

If you turn the crank so the crankshaft keyway is at the three or nine o'clock position. It puts all the cylinders in the center of the cylinder. Making it so the valves won't hit the Pistons while turning the cam

Tensioner could’ve gave up and belt jumped a tooth or two, that’s my guess on how 1,3,4 all hit the valves. The cam was still spinning and kablamie. Once that happened, the belt gave up. Seeing as it’s probably original plugs, valve cover never looked to have been off for a valve adjustment, I bet the belt and all never got done when supposed too.

Alot of times Honda's will jump time 1 tooth then snap. Usually at high way rpm speeds. Usually bad news. Cheaper to fix than new car payment. My 95 EX 350k still going. Rebuilt twice myself.
