This is a detailed step-by-step video of how to change the Honda CVT transmission warmer filter in the engine bay, the trans filter inside the pan, and the fluid along with all the torque values. Even if you call most Honda dealerships, they will not tell you these cars take two transmission filters. Searching online, will give you the part number for just one of the two filters. Please find the part numbers and current pricing as of August of 2023 below.
These CVT transmissions have a much higher rate of failure if the fluid and these filters are not replaced every 30,000 miles.
Honda 25420-5LJ-003 Strainer Assembly (CVT) - 2015-2021 Honda $17.00
Honda 91308-5LJ-003 O-Ring (21.8X1.9) - 2015-2021 Honda $1.50
Honda 21814-RJ2-003 Gasket, Oil Pan - 2013-2021 Honda - $11
Honda 25450-P4V-013 Filter 1996-2022 Honda - $22
Honda 25565-5LJ-A01 O-Ring B, 2015-2022 Honda $4
Honda 25564-5LJ-A01 O-Ring A, 2015-2022 Honda $2.50
Transmission fluid drain plug crush washers for Honda Civic 10-pack on Amazon - $6
Honda (08200-HCF2) CVT Transmission Fluid $10 x 6 = $60
FloTool 10701 Spill Saver Multi-Purpose Funnel, Blue from Amazon $2.50
Approximately $130
I purchased the all the Honda parts and fluid from either www.hondapartsnow.com/ or www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ (not sponsors). If you know of better pricing with genuine honda parts online, please share in the comments.
Tools and items used for this job are in the video.

Great video Honda dealer near me service manager said filters don't ever need to be changed. Sorry but not buying off on that. I bought a 2015 CRV AWD from a friend of mine he changed the transmission fluid every 25,000 miles and used Honda fluids but never changed the filters. Dealer convinced him it didn't need to be done. I have all Honda parts and fluids and will be changing it all out at 94,500 miles. I'll clean the MAF sensor while I'm at it.

Very thorough and detailed video for this procedure! It's easy to tell you have experience and a great work ethic and attention to detail. I really like the quick synopsis/summary at the beginning as it helps to review the procedure if one gets "stuck" during the job and makes it not necessary to search throughout the entire video! Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Just swappen my CVT ATM oil, but I did not swap either of the fiilters out. 1. Does the service manual say anything about swapping the filters? Is the filter swap suggested by Honda, or this just extra maintenance that is optional? 2. Can I still go ahead and swap out the upper warmere-filter and two gaskets? Just don't want to drain out the new CVT fluid to remove the bottom ATM filter. Which filter doese most of the filtering, the one in the pan? Great video!
@masood-tv
@masood-tv Месяц назад
Hi Razz, yes, the one in the pan does most of the filtering. Wait a couple thousand miles and do both. When you just drain, not all of the fluid drains out. A second one of the pan will freshen up your fluid pretty good. The filter is not expensive. From then on, replace both filters and fluid every 30k miles for sure.

did my 1st fluid change at 100k...i bought the car from a dealer used at 40k miles so i think it was drained & filled by the dealership once. I didnt realize i had CVT...I replaced the cylindrical filter at the heat exchange but left the strainer. I will replace it on the next fluid change. im thinking of doing another fluid change at 120k and then keeping up every 30k..

Hey Man great video thank you so much for all your information! I just have a few questions I just bought a brand new 2024 11th gen civic would you be able to do this same video for the 11th gen civic or is the procedure the same on the new generation? Also you refer to the Honda service manual a few times how did you get ahold of that manual Honda tells me it’s all online and they can’t give anyone access to it?
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 8 месяцев назад
Hi Isaac, thanks. I have not worked on a 24 yet, but my guess is that it should be the same. To find out, call a Honda dealership, give them the part numbers in the video and ask if they have them and if they fit your VIN#. I downloaded the manual a couple of years ago from the web. But I don't remember where I got it from, unfortunately.

Are half of the bolts stuck inside? You probably overtorqued or cross threaded them. There are ways to get them out. Search youtube for practical directions to get them out, then purchase new bolts from the dealer.

You could defer filter replacements to every 60K...but the fluid on these CVT's have to be replaced every 30K miles.

I don't think people should do this more than once if even that. At most you MIGHT argue 1 change of filters at 150Kish or something but it wasn't designed for frequent changes and people risk not sealing something up or some other mistake. If you clog those filters up with transmission debris, you got bigger problems.
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 2 месяца назад
Hi Greg, CVT manufacturers recommend replacing the fluid every 30k miles.... However, your concern is noteworthy. This job has to be done properly and in clean environments.

I agree. I bought my Civic brand new in 2016 and just now will do the transmission fluid/ filter change now with 90K miles and no issues so far.
@masood-tv
@masood-tv 2 месяца назад
@@nandojunior-gl3rg Keep in mind please that you can make transmissions last a long time by not driving aggressively, driving without passengers, and mostly on straight roads. So, a lot depends on driving conditions, road slopes, and the load on the car. CVT exacerbates it all. The 30K mile fluid change is recommended by Honda - not me.
