Honda Civic Cranks But Does Not Start

Hey there Racer Rob Russell here with Integrity Auto Service In Hillsboro Oregon and today's patient is my neighbors Honda. His complaint was it cranks but does not start. The first thing I did was a basic visual inspection and noted that the air filter and fuel filter need to be replaced. I highly recommend both because they are maintenance items, and like I said in the video, I have seen MANY fuel filters become so plugged that they cause the electric fuel pump to be overworked causing it to fail. I then did some diagnostics and verified that there was injector pulse and good fuel pressure. I tested the spark and there was no spark, so I tested powers and grounds= ok. There was no pulse to the coil so this leads to a bad pick up or igniter and the BEST procedure with this many miles on the vehicle (131,700) is to replace the entire distributor assemble with has both units in it. Not the cheapest repair but the most reliable way to do this repair.

You can test the coil with a ohm meter and specs listed in the Haynes manual. The ignitor (ignition module) can be tested at an auto parts store (assuming this test wasn't conclusive enough). In 600,000 miles in my '92 Civic I had the ignition module fail 3 times. All three times it died out of the blue while driving normally. The 2nd and 3rd times that part was replaced for free under a lifetime warranty from O'Riley's (by the 3rd time I knew exactly what happened and had my girlfriend bring me a 12mm socket, a screwdriver, and the receipt!). The coil failed on me 1 time. In that instance I went out and the car wouldn't start. I replaced the whole assembly one time when the bearings went out of it.

thats a 96-00 model with the D16Y7 motor as you can tell from the intake over the top ...92-95 all had the filter over the pass wheel well... and yes i didn't look in the comment's to see if someone else seen this as well.

Well with any 92 to 95 civic you got two main grounds one on trans mount and one on thermostat housing... And of those check out. Then you will need to start checkin the ecu main fuse which is a 15 in the bay panel that the far corner near fender .. Always always always check that 15 in bay panel..

It was the coil pack for me. Right behind the distributor cap. I replaced the main relay, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires the distributor cap and rotor, and the battery, but nothing was working until I replaced the coil pack. Took a minute to crank it to start but no problems since.

$100 part. Make sure you put the little spring in the new part I almost took the part out and returned it thinkin it didn’t work until I put the spring on the new part.

My 1995 EG8 does the same thing. LX 1.5L. I believe only the cars from Japan had this issue.

Hey, great details on the diagnostic. but one thing you did not mention, when you check the ground coil with the test light for the pulse, you didn't show where the end of the test light connected to. is it, to positive battery terminal?

A little help plz. Got a 97 civic 1.6 sohc cranks but wont start. At first it had no spark so ended up changing the distributor and got the spark bu wouldnt turn on. Long story short ended up checking fuses, main relay, spark plug cables, spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel injectors, crank shaft sensor and still nothing. Inserted scanner and it read backfire on piston 4 and 2 so checked timing and it turns out that timing was wrong. placed timing in correct position, Took engine head to the shop and checked valves, got a new head gasket placed everything in place and still no start. Any Tips and advice would be helpfull.

thanks for the video...My 1990 Accord wont start...no spark at plugs...and no spark at main coil terminal. Also...when i connect a Power Probe to black/yellow wire....should be red....is GREEN (ground)...what is going on? Any help is appreciated!

I had the same problem on a 98 civic, it would run for couple of minutes then it would shut down. Whenever you put the ignition on, the green light on the "drive" flashes and turns on. But when I had this problem the light wouldn't come on. Problem was the Main Relay located on the right side of the dash board. I did not have to change it, i just welded a loose inner part and it worked.

hey I have the same problem but once I take it apart there is no small screw on the relay an I cant take it out. what should I do??

You could have changed the igniter and fixed it. I just did a video on how to diagnose this same issue. No need to replace the whole distributor.

+oldskool funk I saw that video and you are right. Most of us don't have a big wad of money in our pocket and its best just to find the culprit and replace that or fix if we can. Very good videos.

1keykneedeep depending in the vehicle. My 90 ef honda civic cost $250 for a brand new distributor where as the ignition coil only cost $34 to replace and only took 10 minutes

i already replaced the distributor, entire engine harness, ecu and injector resistor box. still no spark or injector pulse, only code i have is a tdc code, any ideas?

I have same problem, wont start asks like it does but don't.... New Main sensor, new spark plug wires. Distrib. has spark.... passing fuel..... have green light for key........tried everything what else can it be....Thanks

I have a 98 honda civic dx one day as i was driving it my battery light came on and the car just lost power didnt wanna turn on anymore so i thought to my self it could be the alternator... so replaced it also bought a new battery installed both of them but still doesnt turn on it does crack like wanting to turn on but doesnt... i may need to replace mt full filter might be clogged up

Mine is a 1992 honda civic crank no start had to have it towed from work car started fine leaving home went to the gas station started fine.. I get to work turn her off and went to go to a closer parking spot and won't start.. I have power.. changed my relay still no go been without my vehicle since last friday.. I have an appointment tomorrow.. I can't use my paperclip trick because the wire I need to get to is so far in there and I don't want to pull being that I can damage wires.. any suggestions would be of great help..I also did not mention. I have 135000 miles on it but it is old so I know I'll be having some work to do on it..

No reason to replace the whole assembly if it's not leaking oil past the shaft. At his point we know it's the ignitor. You have injector pulse which means the pick up is working without a doubt. I'd have just replaced the ignitor to fix it and coil since I'm already in it. You can get an ignitor and coil for a fraction of the cost of a whole assembly. Factory parts too. And 131k miles isn't a lot of miles. Seen plenty of distributors on Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford, Dodge, etc. roll 200k miles.

wow that is nice to know my honda civic 2003 has a code P1457 Evap emission Control system Leak detected. No one seems to find that actual problem I'm frustrated. I've change Black Plastic Vapor Canister Dorman and Dorman Vapor Canister Shut Off Valve. I still have the same problem every time i put gas in my tank it gives me trouble to start. I give up!

I have a similar issue but on a 93 honda prelude, it starts but dies pretty instant it idles at around 400 rmp, If i hold trottle and start it it will stay running for about 30 secs. My first thought was timing jumpped, but now im also thinking its fuel related

o2 syncer all ways the o2 when you have to shift to nutral and rev the engine or push the clutch in and rev the engine

Hello , needing help. Ok , My 1998 Honda Civic DX has been down since November 2018. I replaced the distributor cap and it beginned working for a few days and went back down again . I replaced the battery and the alternator and it’s still not working. The vehicle cranks but it won’t catch , what could the issue be ? All advice is welcomed.

No insult intended but I've worked at lube shop where sales where the name of the game. And this was a total sell job. Guy does not need a new distributor. Coil back and or igniter at worst. Classic mechanic here. That's why more and more people are coming to youtube for info, they are tired of getting hosed by the auto mechanic. Guy wants his car to start but is trying to be sold on an air filter?

Depends on how long the customer wants to keep driving the vehicle. If the customer is fine with spending a little extra and needs the extra reliability of a new part.....it is not that bad of an idea to replace the whole unit, IMHO.

1997 Honda Civic; the distributer is good and the spark plugs are also good the engine runs very well. Until rabbits chewed the thin wires that them through completely and left a two inch gap !

O.K. so I had the exact thing happen to my daughter 99 civic pulled the number1 spark plug and put tester on it. I HAD GOOD SPARK. Had fuel, spark and air and didn't know where to go from there. Ended up towing to garage and they found an intermittent distributor..............replaced distributor ($300) and now all is good.Just because it shows spark at first don't trust it till you crank a lot to determine bad distributor.

nice vid Racer Rob,,i have a question (my car had no issues prior) sum soapy water got into my fuel tank from that little hole under fuel cap (92-95 Honda civic) car didn't want to turn on, I added fuel cleaner and car turned on for 3 days,, but after sitting 4 days car doesn't want to turn on, I assumed was fuel pump, so I replaced it, nothn. I checked main replay and re sodderd the points as seen in other vids, nothn.,I checed fuel pressure at fuel filter, turn key to see f fuel shoots out, nothn..what could this be? igniter? any advise would help..thanks .

My '96 Civic 1.6 has spark, fuel and compression - but usually won't start. Sometimes when the motor is cold it starts right up. It will never start when the motor is warm. Its now at a mechanic 's shop - he said he is baffled by this car. The timing belt was changed 5,000 miles ago.

@@ChikeNwogu24 My Civic is still parked. I am going to rebuild the motor and fix the entire car. I hope you can fix yours. One of the reasons I bought the D series Civic is their ongoing popularity, I assumed that many could repair problems, but I didn't find that to be the case for this problem. I'm sure many know these cars inside and out, but the mechanic I left mine at wasn't one of them. They are simple cars I'm sure I can fix it when I have time.

It could be the main relay. Re-do the solder joints.

Im having the same problem but ive tested the spark plugs, and the spark plug wires... All of them have spark and you can even see the blue sparks on all 4 wires works. If its a distributor problem would all of the wires be getting spark ? Or would you notice one of them isn't?

My 1999 Civic has this problem. Cranks but won't start. It sat in my garage for 3 months while I worked on the steering rack. I do have a newer distributor however. (cheap ebay one). I'm gonna test the distributor and coil just to be sure

Yo tuve el mismo problema con mi 98 civic, avanzaba por unos minutos, despues se apagaba. Lo que note que cuando funciona bien, la luz verde de [D] parparea y enciende. Cuando tenia este problema no ensiende la luz verde. El problema era el Rilay Maestro o nose como se le dise, pero esta en el lado derecho del tablero. No lo cambie, solo solde la pieza por dentro.

Can you help On my 95 civic coupe 1.6 it has 233000 miles. It has the same symptoms of no start but cranks fine and the smell of fuel but it only does it when its hot, it does it every once in a while and i have to wait at least 20 min to start it.

Would this diagnosis be good for a hard-to-start/no start situation that is accommpanied by backfiring in a 1990 Honda Accord? It cranks but it doesn't start, it mainly backfires as I try to start it.

hey im having crank no start on my 95 acura integra. ive changed my icm and coil an also new rotor in the dizzy.. itll start for maybe 2 second but dies. my friend taps on the dizzy an it stays running longer.. any ideas?

My 1995 Honda Civic it's having the same problem I tried to start it and it cranks and I sprayed fuel on the air side of the throttle and pump the accelerator it started. But after that it was hard to start again and also change the main relay as well. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Ive got a good one for ya.... (This is a random and reoccurring problem) A 1991 honda Civic LX with a recently replaced JDM engine was running and driving fine for more than a year. Drive it home, and one day it just wont start. Replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, and main relay. Checked for good spark, yup good, checked for compression, yup good, check fuel pressure, yup good,.... While having great bright spark, we gave a shot of starting fluid into the intake throttle body inlet, and expected to have some sort of popping result. Nothing! How can you have spark, and add ether, and not have something happen? The timing hasnt been changed since it was driven there and parked. The distributor was taken off, and placed into another 1991 civic, and it ran perfectly. This defies just about everything I can think of. Any thoughts? How can everything be apparently fine, yet it wont run, and be random?

ydeardorff check your engine climate sensor. if it's bad it will cause the motor to flood as it is trying to simulate a cold start. idk if this is the problem, but it's a easy install and 30 to 40 dollar part

Some mechanic rather replace the whole thing for good measure. While some diagnose and fix it for cheap to make a big profit by lying they replace the whole assembly!

I got a 88 civic lx and it has 104k miles , and it crank but doesn't start, the fuel pump works (I can hear it ) , but when I took the top of the carburetor and spraid it with gas (don't know the name ) it turn on fast , new battery, altenator too

Ok having a issue on my 2000 civic dx it will fire up on cold start no problem but if I turn it off and wait 5-10 min it won't start until I wait almost an hour any thoughts???

Battery terminals. Clean it with wire brush. If the terminals overheat, you have wire resistence.

I had the same problem but I change everything and still the same come to find out my wires going to the crank shaft sensor were fired no good I replaced them and started like a champ

i have a 95 honda that will start one day and run good then randomly not start the next and just make popping noises cranking over and the tail lights stuck on

i change my while distributor with plugs and wires but still cranks and no start. i changed fuel filter as well. any other ideas?

@@matth4069 yes the pump and filter was ok. turns out i had to align the distributor a certain angle lol. works fine now. Me grandma happy now lol.
