In today's case study we take a look at a 2007 Honda Civic With a 1.8l 4 cylinder engine. The customer complaint is that the vehicle is a crank no start condition. The mechanic at the shop already verified that he did not see fuel pressure coming from the fuel pump. Follow along as I take you step by step through the diagnostic and troubleshooting process to see if we can fix this car.

@6:10 that power probe should have been reading a ground key off, that's when i knew it was either a bad pump or bad ground. Great video nonetheless keep them coming

Im still just a student at tech school, but I'm pretty sure the 10v reading is simply KOEC battery voltage. It's great watching how good techs diag vehicles. It has helped me a ton with developing my own diag strategies.

Great Video Eric !! The approximate 10.4 V DC feeding out of the Fuel Pump Relay during Engine Cranking is normal. During engine cranking, the starter is pulling lots of current maybe 120 to 180 amps maybe more depending on the vehicle. That amount of amperage being drawn from the car battery will drop the output voltage of the battery to ~ 10 V DC, thats ok cause you need minimum ~ 9 V DC while cranking at the battery to start the engine. Any voltage reading less than ~ 9 V DC at the battery while cranking will probably give you starting problems, due to the fact that electronic components/sensors power voltage requirements start getting affected.

Do you use that to test circuit integrity instead of say a 4 amp test light on that circuit? I'm thinking of buying one specifically for that purpose. It's a pain having a bunch of homemade headlight marker lights etc.
@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO
@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO 3 года назад
I also have a homemade 9006 headlight bulb test light that I use, but the power probe has a built in 8 amp circuit breaker. You can use it to test ground integrity by giving it a power and looking to see if it pops the circuit breaker.

After watching so many vids, I came across your vid. This more likely closer to my situation. Multimeter reads at battery poles of 11.95v Main Fuse box for the fuel pump relay (Mitsuba 7002) slot reads 11.07v (when key turn to on) Under the dash fuel pump relay (Mitsuba 7003) slot reads 11.53v Fuel pump line, the green and black going to connect the fuel filter assy reads 11.74v (during prime) Fuel pump line, the green and black going to connect the fuel filter assy reads 9.30v (during cranking) Have a good ground, checked the resistance between the black wire and battery negative pole, its 0.7 ohms. I checked the main fuel pump relay its resistance is 0 ohms, when I supplied it with 12v. I checked the under dash fuel pump relay its resistance is 0.1 ohms, when Isupplied it with 12v. Just cranking and car won't start. Do'nt know what else to check..

to verify that issue that puzzling you, hook your power probe to any fuse and watch the voltage while you cranking you will see is will be in the 10's , lesson of the day when you check the power supply on any load at idle it should have ground until you energize it, by the way I wrote my first reply before I finished the video I was screaming "you have no ground" ...lol, love your videos

Yes the 10.5V was due to cranking, but it should have been a solid 10.5V and beeped on the power probe. Usually if I don't get a tone/light on the power probe I assume I'm reading 'ghost voltage' until proved otherwise.
