This is a video response to the Honda main relay video that I posted. I've had a lot of questions about that video and I felt this would be a good response. I can't stress enough how much you need to perform this quick test safely. Make sure you keep any and all ignition sources away from the spraying gas or you may regret it. Are you cranking the engine when testing or just turning the key to the on position?

Thanks for the great comment! It is the job of the fuel filter to clean up the fuel before it gets to the engine. I've noticed a trend in late model cars lately not having a replaceable fuel filter but rather a screen inside the tank. I can't say that I have a particular favorite as for brand but I can say try and avoid filling up if you see a fuel tanker filling up the tanks at the station. The reason for this is when the gas goes into the tanks at the gas station it stirs up sediment.

@warrendewalt That is a tricky one. The ECM could be a fault but I'm not sure. When you say the fuel keeps running do you mean that it doesn't shut off after 3 sec KOEO? As for no spark, does the coil have power?

@sundogforlove I'm a little confused, is that car fuel injected? I didn't think the Lxi's came in till 86.

@PeterTX25 The first step is to find out what is missing, spark, fuel, or an engine mechanical issue. If the filter is hard to get to you might try loosening the connection at the fuel rail to check for fuel pressure. Once you find out what is missing you can then narrow down the cause of the no start.

@DruCv617 Good job doing your homework on this one. I would first be looking for vacuum leaks as a lean condition is indicated, but also if you have any exhaust leaks particularly before or near the O2 sensor address those. I think you may find however that the idle air control valve is at fault in the end because they are known to cause that very problem, try tapping on it with a screwdriver to see if the condition changes, if it does, replace the valve. It's under the Throttle body BTW.

@sundogforlove Not sure why that is as I've never experienced anything like that before but since it's driven by the cam I would look to see if there is some mechanical issue causing the noise.

@lenzposa Awesome news about your AC test, well done. As for what is going on now with the no start see if you have spark and fuel and go from there, also check all the fuses just in case. Good luck.

@hoser119 Lots of questions I really can't answer without getting a look at it for myself but start by checking the fuel system for leaks as you should not be smelling gas. As for removing the cluster to replace the bulb that's really up to you to decide based on your skill level and tools. Good luck.

@SpitfireZero Check out the videos that I did on diagnosing a no start to find out what is missing and then look to the more specific videos on missing spark or fuel. If those don't help send me an email or PM with more detailed info and I'll do what I can to help.

@rollingbunny Your going to see a lot more of them as more manufacturers are going to that type. You can check fuel pressure at the engine however.

@1035honda That's a cylinder #4 misfire not an O2 sensor code. You might want to start with a compression test and pay particular attention to #4 cylinder readings.

@slkuski This is just meant to be a quick check to see if it squirts out, if you want more accurate information you will have to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and actually check the pressure to determine what the pressure actually is and if it's consistent.

It could be flooded or out of mechanical timing. If it's flooded try depressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor while you crank the engine, this puts it in "clear flood" mode and turns off the injectors while you crank. You can verify if it's flooded by removing the spark plugs and seeing if they are soaked with gas, if they are remove them and dry them off before you put them back in and try to crank it.

@mealkman I suspect someone did not install a fuel pump correctly or the baffles inside your gas tank have broken loose. Either way I think your going to have to pull the pump and inspect the tank as well as the pump for the problem.

Great question! So great that I'm going to do a future video on it. For now disconnect the air snorkel going to the throttle body on the engine, use throttle cleaner to clean the area around the throttle plate, make sure to open the plate while you clean and get rid of the "ridge of gunk" that has probably built up. That should fix your problem.

@MrRJLandry Hard to say really, you might start by checking ignition timing as well as your tune up items. You could also post this question over at the ETCG forum as I'm sure there will be a lot of suggestions for you there. @Nando111982 Thank you for at least taking the time to check for spark and fuel AND for having the intelligence to conclude that your relay was good because you have fuel pressure, well done. If you have spark and fuel then that leaves engine mechanical. Just for the heck of it try starting it with your foot to the floor on the gas, this will shut off the fuel and help start the car if it's flooded. You also want to check the timing as well, if it's off enough it might not start.

@719stech This is just a quick check to see if there is fuel pressure not how much. To do this "properly" a fuel pressure gauge would be required, this is just to see if you have fuel pressure or not as a quick check.

@ollybb12 It's hardly ever the gauge in my experience it's usually the sending unit so I normally go to the tank and pull the sending unit and check the resistance across it's travel, I also sometimes leave it plugged in, disable the fuel pump, and turn the key on while working the arm up and down while watching the gauge on the dash to verify it's operation.

@ciaraburton I have indeed seen it before and it was a problem with the igniter. The igniter sends the signal to the tac as well as the coil, if it is having a problem it will exhibit a system similar to what you describe.

My dad has an 87 T-Bird that he never drives too. You can purchase a product called fuel stabilizer to help the gas from going bad, I'm not sure if it works on gas that might have already gone "sour", you may just have to run it through. Top it off with some fresh gas and let it mix. I'm not sure if that engine still has a distributor cap, if it does disconnect the wire coming from the coil to distributor and ground it. crank the engine over for a while to build up oil psi for the first start.

You are my hero. I just bought a 91 Honda accord that has the motor out of a 94 Honda civic. It has a loss of power, bogging down issue if you even breath on the accelerator.

Eric. For sure, my 1985 honda accord is carberated and has an electric fuel pump. I have changed both fuel filters but now the fuel pump is louder but still working. I have gradually increased my range and feel confident now. It has 150,000 on it and will probably go 150000 more. I have learned a lot from you and youtube. Thankyou so much. Sincerely, sundog

@tolzy6 It sounds like it might be out of time either mechanically or electronically. Check your timing marks again but also I would do the test in the Ignition system diagnosis video, the bouncing tach could be a bad igniter causing the spark to be off.

@MegaLillion Start by bleeding the cooling system (I did a video on this), then look for vacuum leaks (I also did a video on this). Lastly look to the cold start valve as they sometimes allow too much air into the mix which acts like a vacuum leak, I have yet to make a video on this but I hope to soon.

@BANGHY81 Check the fuses but you might start with a main relay to help the fuel pressure problem, I did a video on fixing them also. As for the no spark you might want to check out the video I did on ignition system diagnosis. I hope this helps, good luck.

@xexilia09 I doubt it's the fuel injectors, you might want to check the ignition system, if you have a misfire it can cause that code.

If you don't have fuel pressure at the fuel filter check the main relay first, if that's good start looking into the fuel pump circuit. I did a video on main relay repair. Make sure you have spark too as well as good engine timing, mechanical timing that is.

@xexilia09 I don't think it's the fuel injectors as they are not often the problem with Honda's. You might check for a problem with the fuel pressure regulator. I would be looking at the fuel pressure to make sure it's in spec. You might also consider posting this question over at my forum as I go there more often and there are a lot of other people that contribute as well.

@SUPERR3DROCKET Check all the fuses and make sure the main relay is getting power on the yellow black wire, if it's not your problem is not the main relay but the power feed to it. Could also be an ignition switch problem not suppling power to the main relay.

@Placer How many DIYers do you know with a proper fuel pressure gauge? This is more of a quick check as if you have a no start with a Honda and no fuel pressure here it's probably the main relay. With GM's I just push the schrader valve briefly to accomplish the same thing but if I don't have fuel pressure on one of those I normally replace the pump.

@sundogforlove I don't remember seeing a Honda with a carburetor that had an electric fuel pump, the ones that I've seen have a mechanical pump on the front of the engine.

Hey Eric so I have a 95 accord EX 2.2 automatic, I’ve pretty much changed the obvious, tested fuel pump, new distributor, good spark plug, clean throttle body, etc you name it, however the car now turns on and shuts off asap, I took off the intake and had my son start the car and I slightly open the throttle body and spray started fluid and while spraying it consistently it stayed on soo clearly it’s a fuel issue but can’t seem to figure this thing out, if you can help I’d greatly appreciate it man!!

@fredthecorp You need to find out what is missing when it won't start, spark or fuel. I think you can rule out engine mechanical since it does run sometimes. Once you figure out if it's spark or fuel you can then diagnose the problem.

@deanfaure It sounds like you don't have the fuel pressure you need so you might want to look into the fuel pump circuit. Know that Honda fuel pumps hardly ever go bad however so be sure to check the main relay and that the pump has power and ground before you replace it.

No, you rock bigblock. It was the fuel out side. I did that to cover my but in case of a clogged filter. I did say to START with the main relay and that their could be other problems. Thanks for keeping me honest Les, believe it or not I'm aware that you and others with Jedi knowledge of cars are watching and I'm careful of what I say and do as a result. @blackwood108 Well I'm not sure what kind of car you are dealing with but I've seen pin connections at the motor connector have problems on some cars. In other words the motor regulator may have been good but your problem may have just been a bad connection the entire time. It's a good idea to verify the problem before replacing parts. In your case verify that the switch is sending a signal to the connector at the motor, if it isn't then look for the cause, if it is it's probably the connection.

@carlosfernand07 If it ran before you did the belt it's probably out of time. Make sure you are looking at the correct marks and put it in time. If you are certain it is in time then check for spark and fuel and find out what is missing.

@philosifur1 That sucks. I've actually seen a tech doing a service on a car once remove the fuel filter and bump the engine with the key to get the rotor screw to line up and in the process set the car on fire. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out before it did any damage, it was a mess to clean up but everybody and the car survived. Thanks for the comment.

@rrjdmkid If your not getting fuel and you replaced the main relay I recommend checking for power and ground at the fuel pump itself before you replace it. I think your looking for power on the yellow wire and ground at the black one. If you see power and ground when you turn the key on then the fuel pump is probably bad, if you don't have power and ground then you need to look elsewhere for the cause.

@kidstang2 Honda fuel pumps hardly ever go bad, besides if you suspect a problem like that you need to check fuel pressure and compare it to spec. I recommend you go through the checks in this video, don't worry about the FITV as you don't have one but check the other possibilities first.

@emartinez650 Probably not if it's the original fuel pump, I would check the main relay located under the dash near the fuse box. Watch the video that I did on repairing a main relay for a fix on that.

@salaceves1 Honda fuel pumps hardly ever go bad but if you suspect it you need to check the fuel pressure before getting into the tank.. Putting NGK's in was the right thing to do but you also want to make sure the cap, rotor and wires are in good shape.

Love your video, loved the fire warning, funny as hell but all the same big help. I working on a 91 and my filer is not easy to reach. we just replaced it on my sons car. All was working great and then his car would run but it would die out and not restart, so I am going threw the web and you tube to see what other tests are out there to track the problem down. My next one will be the EFI main relay. I smoke so I remember not to do so when I check this, thank goodness you warned me! lol. PS and yes people out there are that dumb, that's why he had to ad that part. Made me think on Samantha Silverman's humor. A+ lol.

@jambe1234567 Some manufacturers are nice enough to put a schrader valve on the fuel rail that makes checking this even easier. You could also do the check at the connection to the fuel rail itself. Basically your looking for a place where you can easily check to see if fuel pressure is present, this check will not tell you if you have ENOUGH fuel pressure to run the engine however for that you will need to hook up a fuel psi gauge.

@LilRennagade Honda fuel pumps hardly ever go bad and I don't recommend replacing them with aftermarket units. I've actually done a video on how to repair a main relay that you might want to check out, just listening for a 'click' isn't enough.

@jnffinest The problem you describe sounds like a starter but you say you replaced it. You might want to check the connections at the battery, make sure they are tight and clean as well as at the starter.

Eric, Thanks for the video..I have a '94 Civic. I tried your fuel pressure check outlined in the video, and the fuel didn't spray out, rather it dribbled out slowly. Which leads me to believe the vehicle has low fuel pressure. However, the fuel pump and the main relay seem to be in working order. (I can hear the fuel pump power on, AND I can also hear the main relay clicking as it should) The CE light isn't on either. Any thoughts?

@sjkhmaix That really isn't what a fuel pump relay does in my experience, normally they cause it not to start at all, I haven't seen them cause the engine to die like that. You might check your ignition switch and also the ignition system when diagnosing that issue.

Eric, thank you for all your videos. I have an integra which won’t prime the fuel pump when I turn the key. I changed the main relay , checked fuses under dash , changed the fuel pump under the back seats. Still nothing. What can be the issue?

@dmtgamepack If it's a Honda it's not likely the fuel pump is bad, I would check the operation of the main relay under the dash, see the video I did on fixing them as it shows what to look for and how to fix it.
