On that e-CVT transmission. This is my understanding, so I apologise if I don't get all the technical details correct. It is not a CVT as we commonly know it. As explained by Honda Technical Advisor (Kotaro Yamamoto) the civic hybrid does not actually have a "gearbox". There is no mechanical changing of ratios, as is the case of a CVT gearbox. The Continuously Variable refers to continuously variable available torque by electronic modulation of amperage being sent to the two electric motors. That is why it appears to be "always in the right gear ratio" (remember, no gearbox, no mechanical ratios) and hence the immediate availability of torque. The electric motors aren't really "in the background" they appear to be working in the foreground for that torque delivery. Still think Honda could have come up with a less confusing transmission name than e-CVT.
I bought myself one in Europe, same Premium Crystal Blue colour with the 2.0 e:hev. I'm super happy with it, I've had the car 9 weeks today and put 9500km on the clock.
@@milanoapfel1836 you defenitely can get most child buggies in the trunk unless you have some really high one so you'd need to put one of the back seats down to fit
@@oggyoggy1299 I've driven it. Laughed at the price and ordered a i30n sedan. Which is a better car in every way. For this price it's nudging EU luxury brand pricing. It's like 10k cheaper in the states. It's just not good value whatsoever for a economy car. Only rusted on Honda fans would consider it. It's no wonder they're dying in this country.
@@mharro88 also test drove a Mazda 3 Astina, Audi A3, Subaru XV, Kia GT and others. The Civic hybrid felt, drove and sounded better than them all. This hybrid system is also different than Toyota's. More torque and appears to have a longer EV only range.
Thank you for this excellent review. What I love about the latest generation Hondas is the timeless design, especially the interiors with clean lines and manually-operated knobs etc. Keep up the good work, Honda. Best greetings from Finland! ☀️🇫🇮
i just don't get it. honda generally build more premium car than toyota. the reliability is on par with toyota as well. yes, toyota is cheaper than it but take a look the interior quality in the rev4 and it is easy to explain why it is cheap. why $55000 is expensive to australians while $70000 vw passat is a fair price? just because it is an asian brand? so where is holden? at least as an asian, i still own the commodore
@@zaamuro8408 In VW's mind, definitely... In terms of technical offering is a bigger Golf with nothing special. Good car but just like the next one. This Civic is offering some tech that VAG is not providing.
@@shivamarya5225 Yes it does, but tell that to the average Australian consumer....like the reviewer said, they could've just called this the new Accord Euro.
cuz you are comparing it with Corolla hatch back? Try a test drive (like I did), you may not want to call it a hatch back. It is quite roomy, almost like sedan. So, it is a tricky one to compare since most people will try to compare it with most hatchback, but it interior size will be significantly bigger than all those hatchback car. But yes, if it was priced at 44K, it will be surely a winner (and by a huge gap!).
@@Mexxx65 it's better than an A3 already. A3 doesent drive nearly as good, it's based on the same platform as Jetta but with better suspension and interior
@@Mexxx65 I don't see why not. Maybe 20 years ago, but today they're nothing special. For sure they're not offering this advanced powertrain, and chassis refinement as well
Top 5 Honda comment Ok ok ok...we've already heard from overseas reviews of this car, that you can't manually select EV only or Petrol only. You've driven it in Australia now. "Around town" ev mode "Highway" petrol engine kicks in. But at what speeds? AU speeds? Around town you mean in 30/40/60/70 kmh limits? Or how about 80kmh? At 90/100/110kph the petrol motor kicks in?
It can go upto 110km/h using motors only as long as battery remains charged But engine will turn on at even 30kmph if bettery needs to be charged. It has an ev mode and you can drive select it but it'll drive on electric if battery is charged. Check Autogefuhl's review
It'll use the electric motor until it can't use them anymore, or you go above 110km/h roughly, so in short it'll just go until you're out of juice. Ev mode is pointless for a car like this except to creep quietly around a carpark, but the car is already super quiet and will do that kind of driving in EV mode by default anyway. Waste of a button to include it.
@@dsub1994 To be precise, the traction motor can pull the car on its own from 0 to top speed. It's designed just like any BEV. The only difference is the source of energy, as you said it will eventually run out of battery. Parallel hybrid mode can be engaged at constant speeds between ~70 and 140 km/h, but that's done only because direct drive happens to be more efficient to cruise. In fact, in full acceleration, the electric motor will be again the one doing 100% of the work, at any given speed.
I have a 2004 hybrid Honda. Caused so much pain, a well designed HUGE LEMON I decided not in my present life and in the next few one going to make a mistake to own a Honda. They should just make a combustion engine car and after just retire from car making...
After honda screwed me, will NEVER come close to it. In fact, honda effectively ceased being Honda when the Old Man died (1999?). Now it's just yet another ford but with previous glory. My last honda was a 1998 Civic that I sold a couple of years ago. It was the last good batch but with at least one REALLY weird "feature" - it had the charging warning indicator light on the same fuse as the alternator charging circuit so if (in my case - WHEN) the fuse blows, the very same warning light that is supposed to inform you about malfunction renders inoperative. What kind of moron would do that?!? But that's not the main event that removed honda from my verizon. Conclusion: TOYOTA ALL THE WAY!
These Civics are way too expensive. The 1.5 turbo is a joke at $47k and this is ridiculous at $55k. If this was 47 and the 1.5 was around 40, I would consider one.
But you do not get such a fastback design with low CW value and that range. EVs = SUV why? Does not make any sense. That’s why Hyundai comes now with the „aerodynamical E-Limousine“
@@qufi1 Who makes a proven dependable and reliable EV at this point of time ? No one does. That's why i'm watcing this video only Japanese makers have the reputation of building cars that last for decades.
@@johngibson9463 but it's way more premium , more features like cooled seats 360 degree camera , nicer materials, bigger inside with the wagon , longer warranty 7 yrs , trusted engine, dsg and there's a decent dealer network unlike Honda and more fun to drive with a LSD I believe. Also it's actually 50k drive away not mid 50s like this thing either.
