Correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt the Civic Type R have a limited Slip whereas the 135 is an open diff? That might help explain how well it performs as compared with the Bimmer on this surface.

Seriously, I never understood why people throw shade at one car or another in a comparo when they are both great cars in their own right. Diversity is the reason why the car world has so much to offer that you needn't ever get bored. FWD, AWD, RWD, turbo, NA, large displacement, small displacement. It's all just different ways to experience something we all love, and I personally want to sample as much of that diversity as I possibly can.

For fun, no doubt. For track performance, AWD is several times faster. Formulas are better with FWD.

I have an M135i now, I had a Civic twenty odd years ago, not the type R, but it still had the V-Tech engine, I absolutely loved that car (until I wrote it off). One of the best engines made that V-Tech.

the (FK2) Civic Type-R isn't coming to the states, it's gonna be the next generation of this vehicle that makes it State side.

r1sh12 first of all i don't know what your talking about. the high point of the Civic Type-R before this current model was the FD2, which is certainly a better and overall faster car than the EP3. the current FK2 has a much higher capability than the FD2 and certainly more than that shitty FN2.

BMW will be overall the much more satisfying driving experience. Compare this Honda to other economy cars, not an RWD M135i.

@@carlincledon4794 Most cars from the past 30 years have catalytic converters in their exhausts which are designed to control exhaust gas emissions as per environmental laws. These converters alter the chemical composition of the exhaust to be less toxic, as a side effect of this they restrict the speed and flow of the exhaust gases leaving the engine. It all has to pass through the catalyst. This in general reduces the power of the engine. You can remove these cats and fit a cheap empty pipe, increase flow and performance quite a bit. However the car is then usually illegal on public roads. The next best thing is to buy an aftermarket catalyst with less 'cells' that restrict the exhaust flow far less than the original and improve performance too, but keep the car's emissions just about legal. Since they take more design effort and also use precious metals in the catalyst like the original they cost a lot more than an empty tube. In either case better flow = more power and an M135i has pretty restrictive cats. On the standard car ripping out the cat probably gives you an extra 20 horsepower without doing anything else and makes the engine more responsive. On a tuned car the effect is even greater since you're already shoving more exhaust through.

It's too soon to talk about Honda vtec turbo reliability. It's almost all new tech to them. And if you look at how reliable is the f1 turbo car..... well. A brave asumption. In some years, it will be the moment to talk about how reliable this engine is. Obviously, Honda has a good reputation in this regard. But time will tell with this one.

I understand where you're coming from but comparing an F1 car to an everyday car is far reaching. I know Honda's recent racing engines have had trouble. This isn't the 1st time but within a couple of seasons they will set the standards as a power house. Every auto-manufacturer goes through a learning curve. However, even within racing, like Indy, the V8 Honda designed was astonishing. Compared to its competitors, the engine was a nightmare. It was a 3.5 Liter 650 horsepower monster that was one of the most reliable engines in the racing circles. Racing companies flocked to have that engine and Honda wouldn't let anyone keep them to keep tight control of their technology. One thing that I'm almost always blown away by Honda is their engineering prowess when it comes to engine design. They tend to over engineer their engines for reliability. Honda, above all else, is a premier engine maker. They make engines not only for automobiles but airplanes (from what I read their astonishing turbines), lawnmowers (best lawnmower I ever owned), motorcycles, generators, and a lot more. They employ a large assortment of scientist like theoreticians, physicist, and chemist to constantly develop new technologies that are patented to other auto manufacturer. In a way, Honda is more of a technological innovator than an automobile company. I'm not sure whether the turbo unit is made by Honda or outsourced to some turbo manufacturer like Mitsubishi, Honeywell, or KKK. It wouldn't surprise me either way. They know how to design engine components with incredible tolerances and if turbo housing is outsourced, I'm sure the specifications demanded on the product are set at very high standards. The K20 and F-series have already proven that Honda can do something that no other manufacturers can do. Design high compression engines, high redline, DOHC multivalved engines, with the most reliable designs while still maintaining high horsepower/liter. However, in the end, you're right, time will tell. But based on history, if they continue to build turbo v-tech systems they will become the gold standard of the industry.
