LIKE if you think the Honda E is the cutest EV out there & SHARE if you think EVs should be more affordable than this..
It's retro alright, but it's also built for the modern world. We have featured the Honda E before, but this is the first time we've been able to try it out in its natural urban habitat. One thing is for sure, it is a beautiful car with a smooth and simple design that turns heads wherever it goes. Despite being compact, it's surprisingly still a 5 door, and offers up some notable extra features including cameras for wing mirrors and a panoramic glass sunroof. For a premium compact car though, the battery and range are also small in comparison to other similar-sized EVs. It's fun to drive and a great little city car, but is the Honda E the ultimate urban EV? If not, which one is?

Why make anymore an EV with small battery and max 50 kWh charging? With 150 kWh charging that small battery wouldn't be "any" problem. Ten minute stop every 200 km is not optimal, but not a huge burden either. It's a city car after all.
@Muppetkeeper
@Muppetkeeper 3 года назад
It's expensive and it has a low range, but let's not forget, there are thousands upon thousands of Range Rovers, Tiguans, Volvo XC etc etc SUVs that just take the kids to school every day and then sit on the drive. If we could make these "trendy" for the posh school gates, we may actually be able to kill off the "my other car is a Range Rover too" mentality.

@@Wayfarer-Sailing My daily commute is 10.1 miles round-trip, so yes a car like this would cover my typical daily needs easily. However, every now and then I might need to make a longer drive, about 100 miles round-trip or so, on relatively short notice (same or next day). Even if I have enough notice to charge to 100% that's not enough, and I would be reliant on public charging. Doable? Maybe, but it's a bit of a gamble since public charging is still rolling out. I wouldn't want to take that gamble. And for the price? That price for that range is crazy. £30k is over US$38K. I recently got a Kona Electric for that (before rebates, which would be applied in either case currently so it's apples-apples). The Kona EV is EPA rated at 258 miles on a full charge... same price, 2.5x the range.

I agree. Regardless of how many miles you do each day, it costs too much to agree with. A Nissan Leaf will do about the same mileage used. Yes, it doesn't look as good but they were produced back in 2011-2017 and can be had for 8-12k for a great example. Yes it is a small car, but even so, it should be able to be more efficient. It'd be fine for my use but damn the cost and the boot is as big as my little car lol if not smaller. I'd have to wait quite a few years. Hopefully it wouldn't degrade as fast as the Leaf

It's a fine illustration of why segregation for cycle facilities is important, then the kerb or posts will mostly keep vehicles away. I do worry that modern cars have way too much of this stuff and people are inevitably be going to be looking the wrong way at a critical moment. If the car was doing the looking out the front/side that would help, but as these things are largely developed in the US I expect them to be terrible at spotting people on bikes/peds in typical UK townscapes. (see Uber driving straight into a side-on person+bicycle which should have been the easiest object identification problem).

Yes, my heart was in my mouth as he approached the semi-blind bridge with his concentration and eyes on the screen. Shocking, not a great role model. Although the screen as a design elements is super cool the way it spans the width of the car, actually making it look wider, I do think that this new obsession with these screens providing more than just vehicle functionality ( ie. Entertainment, apps etc) they are increasingly becoming a detrimental contribution to driving safety. It is natural that the more features there are, the greater the temptation for the driver to fiddle with it. Features other than vehicle controls that are essential during driving should be disabled until stationary with the parking brake applied.

For those complaining about range - at my job we have a VW e-UP, early version so rather small battery. It usually claims it has about 70-80km range when you start it up. This car is used daily, going between building sites and offices in our small city (~90k population) and surrounding villages. Sometimes even to meetings in the next city, 25km away. After the initial fears and complaints about the usable range, which lasted for the first month or so, I've never heard anyone complaining about that. Someone picks it up in the morning, goes to wherever he/she needs to be, back by lunch, the car gets an hour of charge during lunch, then someone else does the same during the afternoon. Look at your own average commute and see how much range you really need. Don't count the longer trips you do perhaps 3-4 times a year. Rent another car, or borrow one from your family/friends, for those occasions. I'd get a Honda e in a heartbeat if I could afford one. And I'm a person who have cars as a hobby as well. Love everything about classic sports and GT cars, but I'd be happy to keep that old tech as a hobby and have a small EV with low-to-average range as a daily driver. Prices go down every year, rather slowly though, but soon I'll find that affordable EV that is perfect for me.

As the owner of a (new) Smart ForFour EQ I can tell you that in an urban scenario even the Smart's stupidly small battery (17KW) is generally enough to get you through the day (especially if you have the opportunity to destination-charge). That being said, you can get much cheaper, similar-sized, cars than the Honda-E with similar (or better) specs, though probably not the camera-mirrors, so that leaves the Honda more in the upper class hipster segment of EVs. It's cute, it's enviably gimmicky, but it's WAY too expensive.

Gary what he meant to say was that it absorbs bumps nicely. I was very impressed with that too. It seems to be a characteristic of EVs that they have hard suspensions that are really uncomfortable on roads like those we have in London. The Honda-e glides over our rough roads beautifully.

For those complaining about the price and range, you have to understand that they can't make it too cheap or too good. Everyone will stop buying their ICE cars and all that R&D money they spent developing them will go to waste. This is just a stop gap measure until regulations make it compulsory for all manufacturers to go electric. Until then, they'll put out half measures like these.

2:13 I have that paradolia thing - and it is nice to see a car that literally isn't snarling at you like most of today's designs! Not just cars too - motorcycles, vans, HGV trucks, (e.g. the renault premiums), - even tractors now have that angry "get out of my way!" look to them. I do understand it's due to aerodynamic design that has created this look in modern vehicles, but I think road rage would be slightly quelled if they had a more "friendly happy" look to them - and I'm sure its possible without compromising the aerodynamics. Thank you, Rory, for an excellent review!

A bit weird only talking about the room in the rear in relation to the size of a large adult when in reality it's going to be perfect for very short trips, kids, or (with the small boot size) more storage/shopping space. It's a 99% journey car and for that reason I feel like a bit too much focus was put on the 1% journeys. It's also a perfect car for a car club - just borrow something else for the 1%.

It's design brings joy, but with today's standards and expectations, this is a car that even at its current price point would have sold and been considered a masterpiece back in the days of 2015. Now they are in competition with cars in the same price that have double the range and some better specs. Non are as cute, but that will only get you so far. I think for those who have the money for a second car and don't want to compromise on their sense of design, who want to stand out from the crowd, that sort of thing, will buy this. To me this is an instant classic and shows that Honda still has it, but haven't been using it. I hope Honda doesn't go back to sleep, because the world needs more great EV;s and having choice in style and design would be a welcome part of this continuing EV movement.

I really have a love / hate thing with this car. I loved it when I first saw the concept, but in the years since I’ve been leaning strongly away from car ownership to the point where I went car free last month. I find the phrase “it’s natural urban habitat” very frustrating. No car’s natural habitat is cities or towns. And I think we’re on our way to realising that as a society. At some point in the next year I’m still going to want to rent a car for some purpose though, and for that, this is the dream. I don’t see it as a short range car seeing as both my previous EVs had less than 80 miles of range and charged at less than half the speed this does. I would happily drive this thing anywhere and it would feel like a breeze to me. It is undeniably a cool car. To me the coolest car. But we have to be using them in rental schemes and car clubs, and stop car ownership. Especially in built up areas. We need smarter solutions now.

Alex The car culture is indeed insane. It took me 4 years of EV ownership to realise how miserable car focused societies actually are. Not that I hated the cars. EVs are obviously infinitely better and they’re fun to drive. It’s just everything else I realised I hated. I don’t think I will ever move to the Netherlands as you have but you never know. I’ve got to do something at some point. I feel like I’m wasting my life waiting around for something to happen here.

We've recently test-driven a Honda-e. My wife loves it but I agree with your two main negative comments, range and boot space. I do have one more though: the LCD rear view "mirror". Get Robert to drive the car and ask him to switch from looking at the road to looking in the rear view mirror. Yup, it's near impossible. You see, when you use a conventional mirror your focus is always in the distance: the mirror just saves you from looking round. But if you have an LCD rear view display, ah well then you have to focus on the display itself which is only about 10" from your face. Now oldies like me, and dare I say probably Robert, wear varifocals which have their near range at the bottom of the lenses. Net result is that I can't focus on the rear view display, not to mention that being old I can't focus distance to close range back to distance very quickly. When I test drove the car I had to switch to the night mirror which was, of course, very dark for daytime use. I think the only answer is a clip-on conventional mirror - what a shame. It's a nice idea not properly thought through. Oh and one more thing: the satnav display is absolutely tiny. You've got all that display space and they can only manage this titchy satnav often only taking up half the height of one display. Personally I would have been happy to get rid of most of that distracting wide display and replaced it by a single larger high-res one. Leave the wing mirror displays though. :-)

The Honda E is quite good for a first issue EV. Looks great and functions well for what it is -- and urban EV. What really excites me is what the version 2.0 or 3.0 may be like -- more range at a lower price and hopefully available in the US. Honda E is now on my short list of an EV purchase when I am ready to trade in my Subaru Forester in 2023.
