Honda e vs MINI Electric: In-depth head to head review with Ginny Buckley & Tom Ford / Electrifying

We're out of the Electrifying studio and back at the test track with Ginny Buckley and Tom 'Wookie' Ford fighting over which is the better small electric car - the new Honda e or the MINI Electric.
These two retro-styled hatchbacks may have looks that hark back to the past, but they are packed with the latest tech and are a hoot to drive,
But both have ignored the 'biggest is best' battle of the batteries and have instead chosen to go small. This makes them lighter and more affordable but means the real world mile range is only just going to be in three figures for most drivers. Is it enough?
Tom and Ginny have different favourites and can't agree. Which would you choose? Let us know in the comments!

I saw a Honda e on the dual carriageway yesterday and instantly wanted one. It moved like a go cart. No electric car has so far made me want one. Reminds me of the original civic from the 70s

people say the MINI Electric is ugly but I would go with the MINI all day because it's just so well built and I like the looks so so much. No doubt the Honda will be amazing, but I am loving my mini cooper so I think I will LOVE the mini E even more! The thing is that with the MINI is quirky and you get that "BMW" luxurious service with the dealer too where you dont get that at all with the honda..

Enjoyed the head to head. I'm a big honda fan (1st car, 3rd car, 2 motorcycles). This is their best design since the s2k (nsx is nice but not gorgeous). Bring the e to the states!

A split-folding rear seat would have been handy in the Honda. On another note, what happens if/when the Honda's "mirror" cameras stop working; is there a stick-on emergency wing mirror?

Yeah I'm looking at the mini but I'd get different wheels, de badge it and I'd want to change the grille so it's maybe just black with no E badge then it'd be good. Shame it's not got a bit more range and a bit better performance otherwise it's be pretty perfect

The Honda E is he new MINI, it's the new Golf, It's the new Fiat 500, it surpasses them all. A lifestyle car that will look comfortiable anywhere. It's actually reminds me more of an Aston Martin Cygnet. A tiny car with some cheap underpinnings and so-so overall design, but made to look luxurious. You can forgive it's high price and low range. Are the batteries replaceable? Great review overall.

I “traded up” from a Toyota iQ, so this seems a big car for me. Quite big enough. Fiat 500e looks nice, better than Mini, but I love my #Hondae

lets not jump to conclusions yet but a rear wheel drive short wheel base vehicle such as the Honda E could have issues with traction and control during wet and or snowy roads, there have been a couple reported incidents on this. For em my Front wheel drive 2019 Soul EV and the new 2020 Soul EV have done great on wet and snowy roads with their weight and front wheel drive, similar with the Mini.

I’m really not keen on all those screens on the Honda, it is far too confusing and other reviews say the software is really clunky. I have the Mini Electric and I am so impressed by it so far. Range and efficiently are both important. You can have a large battery and an inefficient motor vs a small battery and an efficient motor which can both have the same range in the end. The Mini is perfect for me, I have done 800 miles in my first month, with very little public charging, in fact I did not need any public charging I just wanted to try it. I’m also on Octopus Go at 5p per KWh overnight, giving me 1p per mile driving, or £100 a year for 10,000 miles, and that does not include the free public charging I will get.

All I can think of is the beauty in the beast not referring to the commentators alone but their vehicles and the commentators the mini is a bit of a beast but has a beautiful commentator the Honda ear is a beautiful car it had a beast of a commentator

Your logic around small batteries being good for "fast charging" is bonkers. "My tank is smaller so it fills up faster!" how is that useful?! Surely it's about range per unit time? How about battery cycle life on a tiny battery?

I don't really like the styling of the Honda E and it is way too expensive for a second car. I think the Mini is more appealing to me but as a one car person I want more range. I had a Zoe ZE40 for three years and the 180 mile range was just enough for me - neither of these cars would have managed trips to the coast without faffing around charging (it would be ok if car parks had 3 pin point bays you could leave your car in for several hours though - I never understand long stay car parks with rapid chargers and an hour limit so you can't use them on a day out), No way I'd have either of these rather than an E 208 or Zoe (especially given that discounts are available on these making them cheaper).

I like both of the these, however I put my money where my mouth is and purchased the Honda. Why complain about the rear seats and that the rear windows don't wind right down on the Honda when there's no mention that it's virtually impossible to get into the back of that Mini and the windows don't even open! Yes, I do realise that a lot of these points are done for entertainment purposes, but it's poor when they resort to this.

The Honda is really really cute, except the charging port is a really really poor design choice. In rain and snow, not a good location. And it just looks dumb to have a flap on the bonnet. Just wait, the next version will move the charge point to a better location. For electric commuting either car is a better choice than an ICE vehicle. 👍

I'm with you Tom the Honda wins it outright easily. The fact that it's fresh cool well built has four doors and a very interesting gadget interior I want one. The mini is already outdated the interior is boring they can stick as many dayglo plastic on the outside but it still looks like every other Biggie going down the road.🤣👍

You won't keep it long enough once the newer more efficient models come out so you'll never ever know what efficiency is and a 5 year old EV would soon be a scrap yard find just for the battery......car makers DON'T make cars to last or else they wouldn't stay in business too long.........that is a fact of life.

My only negative on the Honda is it's slow, 0-60 in just over 8 seconds, the mini is about a seconds quicker. Ideally I'd have liked an electric car thats 0-60 starts with 6. The range on them isn't great but isn't a big deal to me. The Cupra El Born may be better than both but it's hard to say atm. The biggest issue is where electric costs more you could potentially get a hot hatch like a fiesta ST and the fuel, tax and cars monthly price would still be less than the monthly cost of the electric car and that's then not worth looking at imo because I'm not buying it because I have this belief they can cure the world from pollution

0-60 times are not that helpful with #EVs. The #Hondae accelerates well at all speeds, esp 30-50mph, but it's not slow at higher. Never had problems overtaking. Quite quick enough to leave many #ICE cars standing.

@@blackrocket2000 I've done a lot more research since this. I was very surprised that the Honda E up till 50 is actually quicker than pretty much all the other affordable EVs, it was quicker to 50 than the Kona and id3 with the 204bhp and the Leaf with 245bhp but the others gain it back once you get to 50. However I'd rather a car that beats them all to 50 than one that is beaten till you get past 50. In the real world that'd be more useful, especially at the lights and you silently leave them behind which I like because it looks effortless and casual lol. The Honda e is definitely my favourite but atm its coming out too expensive, the Corsa, e208 and mx30 are all a few thousand less,im hoping the prices on the Honda are better in a few months when I'm looking to buy

Range vs Efficiency If you can’t afford much, then efficiency. If you don’t need to worry about money, then range. But if you can’t afford much, you won’t be able to afford an EV. So the question is realistically without meaning.

what is Ginny on about?? The Mini electric is just a Mini retro fitted with electric. The retro dash is getting dated pretty much like most BMW interiors, just laziness minor updates.

@@Set22Kill i own two late model BMWs and had few Mercedes prior to that. Look at Mercedes, Audi, Porsche they all have evolved. BMW current interiors are just tweaks of ten year old design. If you don't believe me look at the interiors for 2010 model BMW and compare it to the current range. Rear wheel drive was introduced to production vehicles by Honda, get it fact check, as you obviously know less than you think.. What do you own? I put my money on what I say, do you? I'm speaking as a BMW current owner but what about you? Oh yes I've been in a BMW, everyday for the year in fact for more than the last ten years.

Charge faster cos it is a smaller battery (facepalm). If you have 2 cars with the same efficiency, 1 with a small battery, and one with a big battery - and you charge both - the small battery to 90% and the big battery to 45%, you can still drive the same distance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The time to charge is based on the amount of battery you used - and for the same distance to drive and charge rates (ie mostly 7kW type 2 home charger) - it is ultimately down to efficiency - how much battery did you use, and how much you then need to charge cos you used electricity to drive that distance. 99% of charging will be type 2 home charger - so always the same charge rate. If you have any sense you get Octopus e-drive tariff (or equivalent), so you 4 hours of charge each night - giving you up to 28 kWh each night So it is efficiency that controls how far you can drive each day.

Mini may be “familiar” but oh dear, the “electric styling” is not great. The #Hondae is a bigger car, with more space. Ok, boot is small, but back seat drops easily with one action. Hondae is the future, not an “e” version of an #ICE car. Range difference is not the deciding factor and Advance with 152bhp is quick: drive it to find out. And smile.

The biggest difference is that the Honda is an intentioned EV build from the ground up. The Mini is not. It’s an adapted ICE platform. You’re simply not getting a true electric car. That Mini’s pukie trim and crucifix rims must go 🤯 The Honda’s amount of plastic screen bezels is slightly disappointing.

It's funny when Automakers put a battery pack in city cars which gives them more range than a 24kwh leaf when you consider Chris Ramsey entered a 24kwh leaf into the Mongol rally and completed it without even finishing last.

i test drove the Honda, got 160 km... that is for better lack of words, shit. I JUST made it to the city, needed to look for a charger, sat there for a good 15 minutes before i even dared to drive around town and do my errands and what not. And after that i needed another charge of 45 minutes, THEN i could drive back home. Too expensive, too little range. Might as well save some cash and get a used Ioniq with the same range... The Peugeot E-208 on the other hand got me a good 280 km of range when i tried it, so i only needed a 15 minute stop then i could go back home without issues :) Pretty much every car dealer i spoke to said the same thing, anything under 300 km of REAL range and no less than 100 kW DC and 11 kW AC will be a very hard sell (in Sweden that is). I do know some city dwellers that are perfectly happy with their old Leaf 24-30 kWh, but they do about 3-6 km a day so there's that.

To me the Mini looks bloated and the Honda looks Mini-malistc. The Honda is built on a truly dedicated electric vehicle platform while the Mini shares its layout with the petrol Mini. To share the platform is way to much a compromise as illustrated by the Golf Ev versus the Id3. It doesn’t make much meaning to make an electric car with front wheel drive compared with rear wheel drive. Something Minis parent company BMW seems to realize because their own electric car (the i3) which shares components with the Mini is indeed rear wheel driven.The only advantage for a front wheel drive ev is directional stability and cross wind stability (which might be a huge advantage if the driver wants to write and read SMS’s 😳But don’t do that, newer ever!} on all other counts the rear wheel drive wins. One more thing is it really true that the Honda is wider when the side mirrors are taken into the equation? Which one has to do because it doesn’t make much sense to crash/smash them of the car on a regular basis 🧐 I will have to look it up.

I have driven MINI SE and i3. The MINI is more fun. The i3 has more range and a larger trunk. But it looks kind of weird. And if you put a dent in it, the i3 costs a lot more because it's made of carbon fiber.

Why can't Mini (BMW) make a platform that is electric from the ground up, rather than convert an existing model. They will always play catch up doing this. I remember a time the UK had a thriving motorcycle industry until the Japanese came along.

How do these 2 EV's charge faster. Their battery distance is rubbish but they don't charge any faster as your can charge a Nissan for a shorter distance and properly charge faster than the these too.

LOL.....one guy I know wanted to do 1000 km with a tank of fuel but forgot that he lost all his boot space and the extra weight made it totally unstable on a fast bend and down hill was even worse.

Ah, yes, folks, the Honda hee-hee e... ...This obscenely overpriced, over-teched object looks like a cross between a batt-pack-shopping-trolley and a doubly concave mobile matchbox. Saleswise, in this country, I predict that it will prove to be a colossal white elephant. It features a boot the size of a postage stamp plus a range just about capable of carrying you twice round the block - ok, make that three times - added to which there's a charging-port lid on the bonnet resembling the top of your nan's commode. Finally (this next bit is tech overload gimmickry gone beserk and then some) we come to a multitude of in-your-face screens stretching would you believe the entire length of the dash, one, wait for it, forming a mock fish tank... I kid you not. Presumably its purpose is in answer to masses of ev drivers demanding of the manufacturer that they be sure to incorporate in the fascia images of fake floating perch etc. The one aspect I applaud are those innovative door cameras but you pay through the nose and mouth to enjoy their presence. [News recently reached me regarding an individual who, apparently murmuring yuck phrases like 'Cutesy-cutesy-cool' and probably wetting their underwear in the process of viewing the thing, proceeded to put down a deposit to purchase this Japanese runabout. A few weeks following delivery, said person went into a motor accessories shop wanting a windscreen wiper for it. The assistant's response was, 'Sounds about right!']

The Honda's interior looks hideous and who needs an aquarium and all these dumb gimmicks? It's for people whose mental development ended at the age of 14.

Wow, there's a lot of Honda fanboys here ;) Sorry, but the honda looks to me like an ugly childs toy. And I hate the idea of all those screens in the cockpit. Its also slower than the mini - more expensive - doesnt go as far - and less efficient. FYI, that means it uses more electricity so also costs more to run in the long run. And I bet its not as fun to drive as the Mini either. The only place the honda wins is more room in the back seat, and smaller turning circle. Whoopie. Add to that, the Mini is a proven - and iconic design. It was made on the same line as the SE - uses the same parts. And it goes like a rocket - fun to drive. I hate the space grey though, and the crucifix wheels - but you can change them for free. To me, there's no contest.
