Welcome to a good old-fashioned review of two very new-fashioned cars.
One is the new Honda E. A loveable small electric car but with also quite a small range. It costs £28,660 (after government grant) and has 151bhp from its electric motor, which is good for 0-62mph in 8.3sec and a top speed of 90mph. Its WLTP range is 137 miles.
The other is the Mini Electric. It costs £24,400 (after the government grant), has 181bhp, can do 0-62mph in 7.3sec and has a top speed of 93mph and has a WLTP range of 144 miles.
They're both, though, rather good fun to drive. Join our tester James Disdale as he puts the two head-to-head to see which comes out on top.

EV guru Ian Sampson is doing a long term test on a Honda E. In really bad conditions and driving normally he got 80 miles which he saw as an absolute minimum. The range indicated will be based on previous driver inputs - in short they are driving them like they stole them.

I have an Honda e. Fabulous. It replaced 3 Mini JCWs. The reason you only got 65 miles on the e at 100% charge is because it is an auto journalist demo car - and you chaps all thrash cars. I can easily get 120 miles range. Which for me is fine. I calculated more than 95% of my journeys, I only do 50 miles. Correct decision over the Mini E. But that too is a fab car. Either will NOT disappoint :-)
@js-hl5hv
@js-hl5hv 3 года назад
I second that. I have the MINI and *average* 144 miles range (12.4kWh/100k). When I see people getting sub 100miles, I wonder how they manage that. I actually tried once to see how bad I could get - without speeding that is (I like my license). I floored it at every opportunity and really hammered round every corner - and still managed 120 miles. The longest ever journey I have taken is 160km (100 miles) using about 60% of the battery. When I use the car, my average daily is 50-60km (30-40 miles), so range is never an issue. The winner is up to personal preference. The MINI is a better *car* (faster, better handling, more efficient, better range etc), but the Honda is a better "lifestyle" car. It has far more bling, unique styling, more comfortable ride, and you have to give the Honda its turning circle - brilliant. Whichever you choose, they are both fun little cars which absolutely fit the job description of a city car.

I think with at least the Honda e, you must realize that it’s your total range. You can actually drive that distance without getting stranded. The reserve is massive on it, like 15-20% extra battery. So you can drive to zero and still get home. When I have 6-8% left in my IONIQ it won’t even let me know how many kilometers I have left. It just says “charge now”.

Yipes! A functional 60 some miles of range in the Honda!!! When my used Mitsubishi I-miev was almost 2 years old driving moderately I got an actual high of 90 miles on a charge. This is absolutely bizarre that Honda is not doing better on their battery range. If that's the case what people are actually buying is the presentation of digital access with all the different screens and admittedly better performance. They're not buying transportation. I guess I'd go with the mini if I had to choose between the two. And of course I'm keeping my Mitsubishi. That seems infinitely more practical. Plus it only cost me $12,000.
@global_nomad.

I think we're in the early phases of all this interior car tech, and that in 10 years we'll look back and think "what the hell were they thinking" regarding the giant phone-inspired panels and off-putting rear view mirror field of view. Certainly some cool gimmicks right now, but I can't see this design style withstanding the test of time. Exterior of the Honda is brilliant though.

Time for inductive charging from the parking surface. Suspension that allows the car to bottom out, really get the air gap close to zero. Also to dissuade cats coming in for a grilling. A simple skirt would seal the air gap around.
@detaart
@detaart 3 года назад
Designing suspension that would allow the car to sit flush would severely compromise it and make it expensive and unreliable. Inductive charging is a bad idea. It is extremely inefficient compared to just charging it with a cable. The idea behind electric cars is to help the environment, ie, not to make such silly compromises for a bit of added convenience. Try wirelessly charging a phone and see how hot it gets compared to just the cable. Remember apple's promised amazing wireless charging pad/dock/whatever thing? Never materialized, did it? Because they know it's pants.

You would think that after starting with a blank sheet of paper Honda would have made a better car. After starting from scratch they have come up with a car that has less performance, less range, less interior space, less boot space, less fun and at a higher price than the Mini. The Mini on the other hand has its electric elements added to the existing model, makes you wonder what the Honda engineers were spending their time on, multiple silly screens maybe?

@@davidknell9676 He is another narrow minded petrol head / speed freak. He has no idea what real people actually want or need, he bases all his views on his very limited needs. The people that the Honda and the Mini are designed for don’t want or need a huge range, if they did they would buy a different car. I agree that the Honda could be better, but extra range would increase weight and price, which would make it less likely to sell. I have a Mini electric and it is perfect for me, range is no issue, spec is great and price is slightly less that the same specification petrol Cooper S. I looked at other cars like the e208 and the Zoe, but they did not really fit the bill for me. E208 was too expensive and I don’t like the look of the Zoe. Most other EVs are simply too expensive.

Probably one day we will have the infrastructure and a decent technology for the batteries. If there is an emergency or if you have to go immediately somewhere (f.e. hospital, or to pick up someone) let’s hope that the car is charged. For now, when I see 100 km range on my car (usually it happens once every two months), I’ll stop at the gas station. They're not killing it yet, looks like it's going to make it to the 9 or 10 year mark. I've heard that the carbon fibre moulds are good for 250k cars, so that may ultimately be what ends its production life. But in the meantime, demand isn't dropping, and BMW don't have another EV lined up at that price level, so why axe it? They *were* thinking of axing it until recently though, which is weird. I think BMW's spent the last half-decade unsure what to do with the i-division; the people behind the i3 have left the company now and successive waves of management have had very different views on it. But yeah, speaking of the i3, I'd like to know how it drives compared to the Mini and Honda. Journalists seem to have forgotten that it exists in these comparison tests.
