I was interested in motorized bikes but, I hated the sound of the cheap engines and no suitable muffler. I knew a Honda would be the way to go. So i found this video. Your build is awesome!
Great job! The three videos were really interesting. I realize that a 2 stroke has advantages as far as weight and fewer mods to fit inside the frame and other considerations, but the 4 gives you the reliability, a greater sense of security, and real feel of a motorcycle. Your ride to the mountains was great and your comments were clear...it felt like I was riding with you! I only wish your camera was more pointed towards the front to get the panoramic view as you saw it.....Great job!!
Glad you enjoyed the videos! Yah the camera was tough since it was my very first very cheap camera at the time of this video haha. I've since got a much better gopro for this kinda thing, but glad you could still follow along! :)
I've been riding 2 stroke motors for about 2 years, considered getting a 4 stroke, you helped me make up my mind, think I'll start with something small though, beautiful ride by the way.
little bit slower per hp.. but sleeves/bearings/built like a tank.. last longer.. quiet 8-to10x -...new torque belt transmition.. for 3/4 or 1 inch shafts.. last like 15 yrs if dont raw dog it! dads made it 27 yrs ..klutch :>).. amazeing! im was building the 212 preditar... but i thinking the 79 cc looks plenty powerful enough... my 49 cc is ok at 28mph.. 250lbs< .. thinking i want 35mph.. lol .
I put a 31/2 Briggs on a bike . Took it cross bc many miles . But your bike is the way to build them and good power . I had to peddle up dozens of summets . I can see your bike would do well with any hill . Thanks , been looking for years , for one better than mine . Found it .
Please put a front suspension fork. It will take 50% of the stress on the frame, given the weight of the engine and your body. And a spring saddle will help too. Ha ha I know the cops wont open up the engine and measure the bore and the stroke lol. Put a 49cc sticker on the engine. That's what I did :) Awesome build by the way. Keep cruising ! EDITED - Don't forget to put on the transmission cover so your shoe laces don't get caught in the belt. Ride safe.
It's odd really as it's quite a low revving 120cc and thus is quite a relaxed tune. There are 50cc engines with way more power. The engine in a Piaggio Zip is probably one of them.
@@TimpBizkit maybe more power on the pipe but not torque a four-stroke has, it can just relax and do its job , a two-stroke has two definitely scream depending on how it's tuned...
While I have tremendous respect for the work I've seen you do, I must state that that is NOT a torque convertor. There is one company who mislabeled their Constantly Variable Transmission (which is it's proper name), or CVT, as a Tork-A-Vertor (sp?) and started all this confusion. So, now you know. Keep up the good work.
Nice build for sure. Glad you left the motor stock for Longevity and economy. Thanks for sharing. Like the appropriate 1 hundred pound weight. Fine job...
glad you like it! yah I still have the bike to this day and still starts up first pull, definitely worth caring for mechanical parts and they'll care for you!
I'm not anti 2-stroke it's just the fact when I'm rideing something I like for the spark plugs to last almost indefinitely. AKA 4 stroke When I built my motorized bicycle I cut a Puch moped literally in half and used the rear half with pedals and sprocket bigger spokes rim and better sprocket. Welded that to the front of the bicycle then the rear end could take the punishment I even have rear suspension.
Holy crap dude, you take real good care of your engines. I appreciate your dedication and due diligence with the break in periods of these motors- a less patient mind would add oil and gas and think nothing else of it
I love that you recognize that! Some people don’t care, but I definitely try to keep them running as long as possible. As of now I have over 10,000 miles on that engine, and it’s running like brand new starts up on the first pull and I’ve never had to do any repairs
When breaking in a brand new kart engine your doing exactly that. Breaking it in. When assembling it you would use a molly based assembly lube on the internals. Then run a thin cheap 5w-20w to initially break it in on. Before firing the motor for the first time. Rotate the engine assembly 360 degrees side to side and front to back with oil in the crank case. This will ensure everything inside the engine has been pre lubed. Run it for about 15-20 minutes. Breaking a engine in is essentially seating/wearing/lapping every metal mechanical part to a Match. A thick oil with a bunch of additives like the Lucas will actually prevent the engine from breaking/seating the rings and all the other components to each other. Once it’s broken in and ready for 2nd oil change. Lucas/Royal purple(zinc) or Shaffers7000 racing oil has molly in it. All three prevent the metal components from creating less friction and wear between metal components. In my honest opinion the shaffers racing oil is the best.
Nice! It'd be nice to see what some efficiency mods did like a tuned length intake and exhaust. A tuned length intake needs a properly designed bell mouth to really work. A tuned length exhaust needs David Vizard's Pressure Wave Terminator Box before the silencer. Calculators for pipe length and diameter are available online, as is the Pressure Wave Terminator Box. IIRC those little mufflers rely on high restriction rather than proper design to be quite, NOT good for power/economy.
My break in regimen is Lucas motor kote and full synthetic. Run for no more than an hour and change. I also run a 1/2 quart of premix 50:1 then switch to premium no alcohol. For oil changes I install an oil drain hose. Much easier and cleaner.
On your engine braking, it's not something that is favorable, because if you had to pedal the bike, you would be fighting against the CVT, even if the engine if off, so it would be best to put a one way bearing in the sprocket that is at the CVT that goes to the wheel, This way you can Coast down hills as well as pedal the bike like a normal bike with no resistance from the CVT drive components. As far as noise goes, had you ever thought of getting a rear bike rack (the type to hold saddle bags), and put a much longer quieter muffler between the bike rack and rear fender, this will make it quieter and the rack will act like a muffler shield so things wont be able to get burnt on it. Great job brother 🤠🙏💖
the engine braking only is effective with a bit of throttle applied to the engine, otherwise it's like you said being no resistance to pedal which is nice. i do have another seat for it and luggage rack, just usually prefer the look without it. Not too loud but i could be a tiny bit quieter at times. Obviously I don't hear it cuz I'm the one riding it, but to others who aren't always going fast in front of the engine it would definitely sound louder haha. Glad you like the build!
sweet bike bro! that thing is awesome!!! U have a great and genuine commentary for your vids. I wish i was handy enough to build one of those, if you would build me one id pay you for sure, that bike is just amazing u did a very ingenius build. cheers bro
@@BenCarano awesome dude, if you ever want to build another id be first in line. once again i thoroughly enjoyed your video and the bike is phenomenal, Plz build me one,lol
Could you please send me pictures? I’m in Colombia SA . Next summer’s planning to crops country from east west USA or west East but would like to buy a 4 stroke silent bicycle like pathmoto all terrain but rather have it from an American all around mechanic of course garage sale price 😝
I feel good enjoyin the ride witchu. I no longer have my lil brother with me anymore im sure he woulda enjoyed a 2 guy ride like this my guy great vid👍 i got a phatmoto rover 79cc (matte black) stay ridin👍💯
And believe it or not every 2 days I will go out for 30 miles on a two-stroke bbr tuning. I definitely run this little motor to the fullest but I do want to try 4 stroke what is a good four stroke brand you can refer me to
I'm wondering if these can be adapted to run off a broken Bafang BBS.. transmission. It might be worth searching for any with blown motors. That way you'd have the freewheel and bike transmission built in. I think the reduction is only 15:1 though so you might need a mini belt reduction.
Great video! Great review! I'm sold! Got to get me, one of, them thar, 4 stroke, bicycle engine kits. I've been watching and waiting. I really want to look into a, hub Drive. I've got a 21 speed,, Dan Fisher, mountain bike. With new knobby tires. And I think, it would look really fine, with a motor. And great for an old codger like myself. At 67 years of age! Woo hoo! Actually it sucks. Oh to be young again. Zoom zoom! RemyRAD
@@BenCarano It's a Honda! I have a 43 yr old Honda HS55 snow thrower with the slightly larger GX 140 , also starts on the first pull even at -10F. Engine is ALL ORIGINAL, down to the Japanese carburetor. THANKS for the video!
@@TheOzthewiz Amazing!! yah they definitely go forever! I've got a compactor as well that's over 15 years old and always stored outside and submerged in mud half the time when I use it. Keeps on going like new haha
Is the 120cc in the same family as the 160cc , 196cc ,212cc. I'd like to put one together with the 79cc sized engine. But not sure if the 120cc is the mid sized or the 79cc sized engine. If it's the 79cc size a person could squeeze it in under the radar as a 49cc , especially if you had a Laser etch the bock crankcase. My scooter 🛵 is a 125 but had professional decals made in the same script of the other writing that say 49cc. Anyway haven't had any problems yet.
Having high torques makes all the difference because on a regular bike you would realistically take 3-4 hours doing 25 miles but on a motorized bike it would take 1.5 hours doing 25 miles.
i suppose I could do an update soon! I'm more into mountain biking now, so I haven't been riding it a ton this year, but I still have it haha! Glad you enjoyed the build!
I have a 212 predator on my bike with a cam heavy springs header and airfilter adapter. It’ll run 40 mph with the governor mech set at stock to act as a rev limiter
You will absolutely love the Comet CVT, make sure you get the right one to fit your crankshaft, as they come in different sizes. You may also want to think about getting a Juggernaut high performance clutch from Go Power Sports. They are a night and day difference in quality and performance. I've been using one for 2 years now, and all the belt slipping and mangling problems I was having went away, and the engine just purrs with this clutch. It's a bit pricy, but, it is a far better, high quality part, that will outlast 10 Comet clutches. It is much nicer to your drive belts too. I went through three drive belts using the Comet clutch, and for the same period of time, using the GPS clutch, I'm still using the first belt, and it will be on the bike this spring, as it shows no appreciable wear. I would highly recommend you contact Go Power Sports, and tell them what you have. They will make sure you get the right parts the first time, and back you up with any questions you may have. They don't just sell parts, they design, test, and build machines, and ride them. They are the real deal, they won't let you buy junk. You can get all the junk you want from China. And, no, I don't work for GPS, I'm a retired tool & die maker, I know metallurgy, machine tolerances, how to build machinery, and every measuring tool known to man. I know what I'm talking about, and so does GPS.
The rims are velocity rims. Some of the strongest in the world. They’ll hold up just fine and have for the past 6 years even after getting multiple flat tires and rising on just the rim to the roadside and then to walk it to a bike shop
Hey everyone! I'm sure it will fit just fine, but you might have to make your motor mount to slightly different dimensions specific to your frame and rear wheel
@@BenCaranoI thought with that short exhaust pipe and small muffler it would be loud. Wow it seems to be very quiet like my 2200 watt Honda inverter generator on propane! Is that muffler the straight through type? For trails I like very quiet so no one calls the law. So far for a few years on side walks and trails. I always wave at people, I go pretty slow, I keep pedals turning with engine off most of the time. When engine is on and riding on trail or sidewalk in city. I"m coming up on someone I see I always try to cut the engine off ahead of time wave and pedal around the person with plenty of room. If person doesn"t move over I go off side walk or in grass. Keeps them from calling law.
Im really liking what im seeing with these higher powered 4 stroke engines on bikes. You said that initially you were going to get a gx160, i see those widely available, and lots of clones as well. I have a felt faker gas frame and id say that its pretty similar to yours, but im not sure about dimensions for motor fit. I like your idea about using a torque converter. One if the things that has made me shy away from the 4 strokes is how wide they seem to be on a bicycle. Have you run into problems, such as inconvenience, or uncomfortable about how wide they are mounted into the frame of a bike? Id say that i want at least the power you have with your motor. I wonder how big i could go before running into any clearance issues with my felt faker gas frame? Nice bike and thank you for the video 🙂
Glad you like it! Yes the width is definitely pretty wide, I had to have a special axle made to clear it and still be able to use the Cranks I wanted. I think they make special Kranks now that are wide enough though. Not sure how good quality they are though
Thanks! as for the torque converter I am sorry to say that the company I bought it from stopped making them with the gear on the opposite side from the pulley. Some of my subscribers said they found them from third party sellers on eBay but I haven't found any.
It can but you would need a bigger frame. I actually tried it with the gx160 and it was too big by like an inch. So it is possible with the same process, just not with the standard built-in gas tank frames.
will your engine mount work on other frames , if so can u make to sell ? , love this build want to build my self one but im a big guy 6"5 touch over 295 need bigger frame .
Definitely worth it! I went the cheap rout before and don't have a single engine that made it past a year or two of riding, but the Honda has been amazing and I still have it to this day and runs like new!
Hello thank you your information On how to take care of motor, ; but not sure about fort or tin wheels would be safe for a motorbike my opinion is because of all the bamps and dart est...!. But all due cool looking bike, I like the bike frame with built in tank and no external tank hope to see more up grade or improvement . Good luck from highway control safety !.
Yes the road bike wheels were for when I had a smaller engine on it, but if I did this same build again I would definitely use bigger tires! The bumps are bad
Same! I definitely don't trust bike berry with anything good these days after the quality of my last engine and parts! i bought from harbor freight, honda, CDH and other cnc companies that make the sprocket adapters and all
yea be careful if you mod the heads and take off the governor a couple of other guys on their RU-vid videos done that and the motor blew up and went on fire and the bike burnt up.
My rear sprocket is 36t the biggest advantage to a torque converter vs a centrifugal clutch is that it goes faster as the pulleys chang size as the engine speeds up. It also has a lot more initial torque when starting from a dead stop. But I'll also do a video explaining all that in more detail soon and why I decided to switch.
Break in period needs to wear down the engine components and match everything up. No need for excessive additives… it will just prolong that process. Let er rip. I believe that taking it slow and not flogging the throttle is good practice tho.
So what type u like better two stroke or four .me I'm more of a 2 stroke dude.i just like how they get up and go with small engines. Four strokes u have to do all types of mods to get em to pick up like q two stroke. But I like the rumble of the fours with straight pipes
I love both honestly! I like 4-stroke for reliability because they never die, but I like 2-stroke for small light vehicles that need lots of power and toque
@@BenCarano hi Ben , any 4 stroke pathmoto all terrain type with your wisdom in it , build by you , for sale next summer? I’ll be going to the states to follow itchy boots trails in 2023 but in bycicle. Of course I’m in 👨🦼🚵🏼♀️a tight budget
Hey Ben! Nice build man. I have the same frame and am thinking about putting a honda on it. Was wondering where you bought that transmission plate from? Or do I still need it if I use the torc converter ?
@@lukerogers6273 Yes that is the one I used, there are a few other video on my channel about it with more detail on it. Hopefully it is still being made, production has been on and off lately!
@@warlock.420 haha yep it gets expensive when you go down the rabbit hole. you could go the rout of buying a cheap Walmart bike and putting a little 80cc 2-stroke kit on it for a total of like $600 but it wont hold up very long
@@warlock.420 yah you could do that! find an old preditor or brigs and straton or something. You can pretty much rig anything to go on a bike with the right tools and skill
I ALWAYS , ALWAYS use pure hunny in a new engine break in , because it's natural 🤣🤯💥!!!! Really I use Shell Rotella T in everything with flat tappet lifters. Have had many cams fail before calling cam manufacturers to find out that our government has shafted us on motor oil , to ruin older flat tappet engines to make us buy new ones. Being these aren't roller lifters I use the Rotella in them as well but in these I'll let them run a full tank of gas run through them at different throttle RPM's before installing then engine and doing an oil change. Then after a tank of gas under load of use an oil change. Then it's slave labor for the rest of their lives. I've talked all the old time contractors to put Honda's on their cement , mortor mixers. They love em.
