Nice....yeah that's usually what people fry on those, the pump. Either like you said, letting it run too long without water flow, or leaving water in the pump over winter and it freezes. Get a can of pump saver to shoot in it before you put it away for winter, lubes the seals and forces residual water out of the pump.
Turn the unloader down until you're guage reads 3600 psi with the 0 degree tip. Even though the pump can achieve higher ratings it could cause premature wear. Just saying.
