Honda J35: Everything You Need to Know

Before we can get into what makes the J35 such an interesting engine, we first need to talk about where it came from and why Honda developed this engine in the first place. The J35, as you may have guessed, is one engine in the J-Series engine family from Honda.
This family includes the J25, J30, J32, J35, and J37. All J-Series engines are pretty closely relate. They're all designed for transverse mounting, they all have short bore spacing, short connecting rods, and they're all single-overhead cam 4-valve engines with VTEC variable valve timing.
The J-series engine family weas first introduced in 1996 and it was Honda's 4th V6 family. All J-series engines use a 60° V6 block, which is different than the C-series engines before it which used a 90* V6 block. A lot of the design choices made on the J-Series were specifically intended to give it a smaller footprint than the C-series, which would make it easier to mount into smaller applications and the production process easier.
Today, we're looking at the most well-known engine in this family which is the Honda J35.

Honda downplays the numbers on the J35 (specifically, the J35Y2). It's producing close to or more than 300hp at the crank. I used to think the J35 was seriously an underwhelming engine until you realize engines like the VQ35 and Toyota's V6, the 2GR are running DOHC, a more advanced variable valve time system, higher compression numbers, direct fuel injection, and yet, the J35 still meets or exceeds their performance numbers with low compression (10:1), SOHC, relative V-TEC system, low r.pm. (6800 r.p.m.), and port-injection. If Honda were to employ DOHC, increase the compression numbers, add port/direct injection, a more advanced variable valve timing, and increase the redline (8000 r.p.m.), I have no doubt the J35 could easily 350+ whp (410 at the crank). However, having that much technology in a Honda V6 would increase the cost considerably. The J35 is an incredible well built engine that clearly shows how Honda doesn't have to overly complicate engine technology to meet or exceed their rivals. On the other hand, it would be nice if Honda did release Type-R variant of the J35. A nice good bye to show the world what Honda can do with NA V6.

Meh, not really always the case. There's a saying in engineering that the simpler you can keep things, the better. American terms, modernize a simple design that works. GM kept improving upon the small block push rod V8 engines such as the LS series. While Ford wanted to change the envelope as much as they can, pushing the next best design out always such as the DOHC 32V V8 Coyote. They both make the same horsepower but one is much simpler.

One of the best surprises of my life was my 2004 Saturn VUE with the J35 engine. I got rid of it at 235,000 miles as no one could figure out why my AC clutch had a mind of its own. (I should have dug deeper, as it WAS fixable). I used Mobil 1 with 10,000 intervals for my oil changes and it never leaked nor used oil. Not a drop. I now have the J35Y in my 2015 CrossTour and, well, I'm just not sure I'll ever have another car without a J35Y engine. (My vanity license plate on my CT is "J35Y 278" to represent the engine type and horsepower.) I think Honda did us all a disservice by removing this engine's availability from the Accord. Toyota was smart for keeping their V6 availibility for their Camry line up.

I've got a 2010 Accord Coupe V6 6MT. Real quick, but I'd love to modify it and get it tuned. The engine is great but it can be even better. I'd even like to try to swap in an LSD someday, when I have another car to daily. At that point, my Accord will become a track car. People will be surprised to see an Accord on a track, they will be equally surprised by how fast it is going

I wish Honda made a DOHC V6 J-series 😂 It is interesting that for things like Porsche, Ferarri, BMW, Lotus, and Corvette track builds with 1000hp Honda engine swaps many people still prefer using the I4 K-series instead of the bigger displacement V6 J-series.

A company just needs to make an awesome looking hood with a bump for j series swap (or rework/metal work oem hoods if people want to stay oem), like how the g2 eclipse has a bump to make up for the timing belt/cams.

Back in the spo-com years (mid 1990s to mid 2000s) there were a lot of aftermarket companies making car body styling parts, many of them made hoods with either vents, cowls or even taller that mimics hoods for American cars with tall engines. Too bad all them went out of the market. However I think with some creativity maybe the scoops available for the Imprezas can be put on the civics hoods and make that hole less noticeable.

the J35A9 Ridgeline 06-08' engines have a common Cylinder 4 low compression (usually due to bent/leaking exhaust valve). Any thoughts?

I've seen an 08 Ridgeline burn the cyl 2 exhaust valve. Other than timing belts neglected that tear and bend valves, and neglecting oil changes I've never seen a j35 blow up. Extremely reliable engines. The older automatic transmissions bolted to them are a different story.

Could the Atkinson cycle be a reason why the 4 cylinders have to rev so high to produce a lot of power? I rented a 2001 Corolla (thank you God, that I was only renting that thing!!) and it had good low end torque but on some hills forget anything about acceleration. It may very well be cars like that people think of when it comes to boring cars. I had a 2002 Neon that was also 132 HP and it at least seemed to want to accelerate where the Corolla seemed to want NONE of it! I am not sure if the extra .2 liters helped but was it an Otto cycle? I hear the Atkinson cycle can make a car seem gutless.

I think I've done well with the parts mixing: J35A1 block, crank and rods, J32A2 pistons, heads and cams, J37A2 intake manifold, FBO, like, literally everything, I think, and a J32A2 ECU. The car is a beast, but I blew the differential in my B7WA transmission recently. Don't know whether it was just a bad diff, or it's too weak by design for this kind of motor. Anyone know whether a differential from an old Honda Odyssey is any more durable?

Honda had all kinds of issues with the early 5 speed autos simply because by designed it would get starved for lubrication on the second gear so it would end up slipping. The Honda trans was a different breed. It was setup like a manual. Why they were othen called the hondamatic.

I have said saturn vue. I was wondering what info you might have on the this start-up rattling from under the hood. I can tell you i don't think it's the timing belt tensioner, and it is not the rh engine mount. I have read online about a fix that can be done...re-torque of the rocker shaft bridge .im not sure i am 100% confident to do this myself, but i could with the right instructions. The sound does go away once it is warmed up. 2007 vue. 186k mi. Regular oil changes with recommended oil.

You forgot about VCM. VCM is present in many J35s and has caused some issues. Some VCM J35 engines are also prone to premature camshaft wear.
@WhiTeaNdNeRDyreal
@WhiTeaNdNeRDyreal 2 года назад
That camshaft wear was due to the rocker shaft bridge being torqued incorrectly from the factory. There was a TSB about it. Either way, VCM was always a load of unnecessary problems (keyword being unnecessary). There is another common issue with J series rear bank cams being spalled. That seems like a valve clearance or oil supply issue (to the head). You'll find a LOT of J series that "tick" and it sounds like a valve issue, but NOBODY knows what the sound is. It's not valves, because the noise isn't present for the first 15 seconds after startup. I've found countless people with this issue. Also, the original service manual scheduled valve lash adjustments for "when noisy." Major mistake. Other shops have found that valve lash adjustments were necessary after only 20K miles on most J series.
@wiimaster2847
@wiimaster2847 2 года назад
@@WhiTeaNdNeRDyreal On the Odyssey forum after seeing many users' experiences, we've come to a general consensus that a valve adjustment is a good idea at some point between 150-200k miles.

The guys at k-miata use a BMW trans for their stronger k-series swaps, and i'm fairly sure the kit can be used to fit a k-series into an E46, so shouldnt be much of a stretch to make the adapter plate work with a j-series instead.
