I leave Birsay Bay and head along to my next stop which is the Iron age village at the Broch of Gurness, The Broch (a large stone tower) is said to date from 500 BC to 200 BC and is open to the public. The stretch of water between the main island and Rousay is looking pretty wild with large swells dominating the picture. I am riding my Honda NT1100 and exploring Orkney. Oh, I also moan about having a sore back :) Enjoy.

Well Alex the wind and waves looked a bit roch at the Broch, I guess a dome shape makes a lot of sense when faced with such inclement weather. I'm pleased your now getting the chance to visit it again with your wife, I hope the weather was a bit kinder to her. I'm busy editing footage of when my daughter was pillion for arise to Kenmore via Aberfeldy on the Rocket. We were lucky to get sunshine but it was still pretty windy.

Morning Michael, We had a great time and weather was decent and went to a couple of extra places I did not managed to go too. Looking forward to the video, should be a cracker.

Good morning, I was there for the past week with my wife and had a great time, the weather was excellent and enjoyed seeing the sights again. Many thanks for the sub.

Afternoon Alex, an interesting place the broch, both the central broch itself and the maze of houses built around it. Too early in the year for the visitor center to open, most Historic Scotland properties tend not to open until May. Glad you were able to make the Scapa Flow Museum, it was closed for refurbishment when I was there. While on Hoy there is also the Longhope Lifeboat museum, may not appear to be open but if you wait someone will come and open up for you.

Morning Jim, we went back to the Broch this week and spent a good while looking around the place, it must have been a cold place to live, exposed as it is to the coastline weather. Scapa Flow museum was excellent and the great news is it is free to visit. It was sobering at times when you see the number of folk who died on the ships that went down. I did see the lifeboat museum but we did not have time to visit as the ferry was due in.

Hi Alex, Broch of Gurness was one of the places we visited when we holidayed there years ago. We enjoyed it much more than Skara Brae which was too commercialised and overcrowded, we could take our time instead of being pushed along by the people behind. These places lose their magic once they're covered in placards and £ signs. Cheers, Mick

Hi Mick, we were back there a few weeks ago and it was empty again, timing is everything 😁 and we had a good look around with no one around. I do not think I would enjoy the place in the height of summer but I have now visited Orkney twice in off season and it been wonderful.

Yes, I think that applies to most places now, forget June, July and August. The weather can be just as good in April/May or September/October, just a bit more unpredictable.

You have to be a hardy person to live up there, with the weather, But I suppose they are used to it if they live there. I think that cat wanted to go home with you. Very nice ride out and I hope your back has recovered by now.

Morning Joe, the back thing is an ever present thing, just sometimes it worse than other but you get to know how to deal with it. I was speaking to a couple of the locals (one was an Italian who lived there for seven years) and they say the winters are indeed very harsh, but it just something you have to deal with. Aye the cat was very friendly.

Ah it's Bleary so it must Friday. Didn't expect another nice day in Orkney. Was it the quality - or lack of it - of the mattress at your B&B or something you've had from the past, your back problem? That old wind do whistle up there but my what a place. I'd heard all about Scapa at school in history lessons but it all seemed so far away living in the South. But had no idea of the natural beauty of the place. Many thanks Alex. Hope your second visit is going well for you both.

Morning Peter, I have had a back problem dating back to around the time I was twenty and it comes and goes, one wrong twist and it makes an appearance as on that day. We have had a great week and weather has been excellent and even managed to visit the Scapa Flow museum which was excellent. We heading home today on the lunchtime ferry and will be home by around 8pm so a long day driving ahead.

@@blearyview2254 Have a good journey home, Alex. Yes I suspected you'd aggravated an old problem there. I get a muscle spasm if I don't drink enough water through the day or sitting too long and it's agony so I can relate to yours. Take care and see you again soon.
