Barry's Workshop I easily add fluid through the dip stick tube as well so you do have an alternative. I use the same long narrow funnel with 2-3 reducing vinyl tubes and it flows very fast through the dip stick tube. Just an alternative in case you can't remove the filler bolt.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video! Because of your input I felt confident to do my own oil change! I was even able to get a case of oil from the local dealership for $6.56 a quart! Transmission is running great. Thanks everyone! REALLY appreciate it! ken
It depend on the mileage your vehicle has. I'm not sure what the service interval for transmission fluid on a 2001 is but it's probably around every 60,000 to 75,000 miles. If your car has more miles than that and you're not sure when the last change was, then I'd do one. It's just normal maintenance.
Great video thanks. The washer popped off the drain plug when I removed it. Unfortunately I didn't notice until I had refilled the system. Something to watch out for. My shop manual suggested that after I refill half the new fluid that I run the engine and work the trani thru all gears when adding new fluid. (Add a pint, work the gears, check oil level and repeat until at recommended level.) I put in about 2.5 qts and the fluid level was way above the fill line on the dip stick. That said I didn't need all 3 quarts.
Great video, Thanks! I could not reach the bolt to fill it like the video, as there was a hose & connector right above it. So I bought a bottle of Lucas tranny conditioner & poured it into a cup. I then cut the tip and cut a small hole on the bottom of the bottle. I inserted the tip of Lucas bottle into the tranny dip stick spout and then inserted the funnel tip into the hole I made on the bottom of the Lucas bottle. I poured the 3 quarts of tranny fluid & the Lucas conditioner in the funnel
You're absolutely right. I always make sure I can refill the transmission fluid oil (that is I'm able to open the fill port) before I go and drain the old stuff out). May have been unlcear in the video. I'm glad you liked it.
This video was very helpful. I was not able to locate the filler port. My Odyssey is a 2003 and may have had the transmission fix that utilizes the port. I used a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle and a small hose form the hardware store and filled through the dip stick. Didn't spill any fluid. I drained 3 quarts and filled with 3 quarts when I checked the level it was between the lines. Again thank you. The van has 130K. I bought it used with 98k. Knew nothing about this requirement on the Honda. Seems to run smoother now. Had to use a breaker bar to open the drain. The plug was coated with a heavy black sludge. Must have been fine shavings from the gears.
One thing to keep in mind when you use ramps, YOU DON'T get all the fluid out. It's best on a flat drive way, that's how I did mine. I drove up on ramps broke open the drain plug and then drove off the ramps to get most of the fluid out....
I believe the 2002 may be the first year there was an external filter for the AT. Other information I have found says the filter was internal to the transmission on the earlier models.
Thanks. This is exactly what I need for my Odyssey. By the way, one question for you. I thought I should loosen the filler plug before draining the old fluid, but you did it after you drained it. Am I missing something? Excellent video, and changing transmission fluid is so much easier that I imagined.
It simplifies the process, but it's not a rule. It just makes a breather hole, though you can also pop the dipstick up. Some mechanics say that if you don't know for sure what went in the top, then you have to assume it's full of buckshot, so don't leave it open.
Sure, It's a Home Depot Brand. Called HUSKY. Not too overpriced. I think less than $20. It's my number one ratchet wrench. Very versatile. Thanks for the comment.
just had to have the transmission rebuilt on a 2002 Odyssey, only had a little over 60K on it. Bought it new and always keep up with the maint. Lost a gear in it.
Thanks for information , my question is : The total of quarts is 3, but if you have the towing package, is another radiator for the transmission, Do I need to add more oil ? Thanks in advance
I read in you comment you got into an accident with it sorry to hear .I do have a question on the transmission fill is there a filter to replace and dipstick to check fluid levels like on gm vans
Okay thanks for the video but I don’t think there’s a fill plug for an 03 EXL. There’s too much crap on top of it. I’m going to try to use a smaller funnel and fill it from the dipstick hole. The other two fill holes are just as small and they have some kind of transmission lines running through that are almost impossible to get to
Dude, I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey and I can't find where the transmission's external oil filter is located. I have seen several videos from 2002 to 2006, and it does not have it on the same site. Can you help me with that please
Honda recommends that owners do not flush their transmission as it might damage something inside. Depending on the mileage I would drain and fill every year for a higher mileage vehicle.
Now you got to do it 5 more times or 10. That's some super dirty transmission oil. 3 quarts mixed with that old stuff is not really changing it. But I guess it will help. Though, you really need to get the rest of it out by repeating 5-10 more times to get it really clean. Because you only changed about 1/3 of the oil in the transmission. Lucky you have a drain plug pan. If you do that though, many trans can go bad since debris can get lodge in solenoids in or near the valve body, then not shift right after.
Thanks for tutorial, will change mine this weekend too. Still curious about changing AT filter too. A friend of mine told me that there is an external trans filter that should also be replaced at about 60,000 miles. Filter generic made by Beck Arnley part #044-8003 will do? Have you changed yours?
Just changed the fluid in my 2000 Odyssey as well with 3 quarts of the Honda DW-1. Now It will not shift into D3, 2 or 1. It worked just fine before. Any suggestions out there?
I suppose so. I never tried any. I just prefer to replace the fluid on the recommended maintenance schedule, or when I buy a used car with an unknown maintenance past. Thx for watching.
Hi, I have a 2006 Honda Odyssey and it has close to 75,000 miles on it (120,000km here in Canada) and I live on a long hill. It is due for a transmission fluid change. What would be excessive amount of metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug? Thanks in advnace!
hey @exceldrivevideo the speed sensor on my 2000 odyssey keeps getting hit by my transmission. Do I have a gear out of place? I removed my original vss and there was a piece of plastic missing from it and a bunch of copper wiring coming out of it. I bought a new sensor and tried to install it but when I tried to secure into place it completely cracked...
2001 Odyssey 275k /5 transmissions/ same motor no valve job, trans going again/ 2nd gear, no more transmissions, to expensive, REASON for so many trans: Honda DID NOT BUILD A EFFICIENT COOLING SYSTEM FOR IT, TOO SMALL FOR A HEAVY VAN [4100LB]. I found this out a couple months ago.
ALex WOrldpeace Saw a through video on same van, solenoid rebuild don't have the links in front of me that should be easy for you to find. If I have the time I'd probably do it, wouldn't hurt then put new oil in with some Lucas transfix and not worry about going 3 * to change the oil because next thing will probably be the engine at almost 300 K! Good luck my friend keep me posted if you wish.
After you changed it are you certain you added enough oil? With the vehicle running, and holding your foot on the brake don't let it move. Cycle it thru each of the gears then stopping back in park. With it still running go and remove the transmission oil dipstick and make sure it above the level. The only time I have ever had issue with a transmission not engaging after a fluid drain and fill was it actually wasn't full.
A lot of youtube mechanics are saying that you are draining and adding 3 quarts of transmission fluid on a 2001 Honda Oddyssey. The Honda parts counter told me I am draining and replacing 3.5 quartz, not 3 quarts. My 2003 Civic has a 3 quart transmission fluid change and my 2001 Oddyssey has a 3.5 Quart transmission fluid change.
I noticed if I drain my Oddyssey transmission with only the front end of the vehicle elevated, three quarts of fluid comes out. If I drain my Oddyssey transmission while the vehicle is sitting level, around 3.5 quarts drain out. So replacing 3 quarts or 3.5 Quarts on your Oddyssey transmission might have everything to do with weather you drain the transmission with just the front end lifted or with both the front and rear ends lifted, or the with just the whole vehicle sitting level on the ground.
+ExcelDriveVideo Thanks for the tip about the three foot pipe to give the ratchet leverage to loosen the fill plug bolt. I had to use that trick and it worked.
Yes, so what happens when something gets into your transmission it is ground up by all of the gears in your tranny. However all of those ground up rocks and etc. just sit in the transmissions fluid. when you drain your transmission fluid you are also getting rid of all of that ground up material that your transmission ate up.
TRANSIT CENTER better to do it yourself I been thru alot with shops from them leaving my oil pan a bolt a little open to it having no oil like a man always says it's better to do it yourself
There is no transmission filter on 2003 honda odyssey? I paid like 90 bucks one time for someone to do it. looks like some simple thing. shouldn't have to pay more than may $80 or so for this job?
Have your transmission had any problems after you change the fluid..try to do it on mines 01 ex with 170k miles..the fluid smells like burn..took it to a mechanic n told me sometimes when you change the fluid to this odyssey the transmission be having problems..let me know please
