This is a video that shows how to properly pin the lock cylinder tumbler for Honda panniers specific to the new 2020 Africa Twin. Lock Cylinder kit from Honda- shop.powersports.honda.com/p/1...
My NT1100 was blown over by wind a month ago and my top box exploded due to the impact, ordered one online to avoid dealers and extra costs to replace it and forgot I would have to assemble the lock myself. Thank you for this easy to understand and straight forward tutorial! My new lock and box are all in working order!
Many thanks. This is the second time I have used your video on how to do this, and has worked successfully both times! First on my VFR800 and now on my new Africa Twin 1100.
I can’t thank you enough. Thanks to you…I double checked my cylinder and twice it was wrong. Following your instructions, I finally got through assembling mine correctly and triple checking it. Installed it and it worked perfectly. Your video was a tremendous amount of knowledge and skill. Thank you for sharing it. My success was largely due to your instructions.
Just used this again for the NT1100 Top case/box. Easier knowing I've done it before but still a satisfying job, thanks again, best guide and explanation for Honda lock, nothing left out. I did however have a few lost spring issues (one of the 2 larger ones with no spares) but had some from old locks I'd taken out of some older panniers but then found the springs had rolled and stuck to my laptop (magnetically) after crawling around on my hands and knees for 10 minutes!!!!😁
Brilliant video, The only one I've found which explains the process from start to finish in complete detail. Time for me to assemble one after needing to replace my Pannier on my Honda NT 1100, The NT 1100 Lock is exactly the same part number as the one you have used for your Africa Twin. Many Thanks.
Thanks for your video, I just used it to do the same locks for 2 new panniers I just got for my NC750X. Enjoyed doing them too, very satisfying, the locks in there only had half the pins in and not even aligned correctly. The removal video also helped too so thanks again.
Ya thanks!!! I bought a set of Honda panniers used and wanted to have one key for it all. So this was a great lesson on how to do it. With grease still in the cylinder, it held in all the springs etc. so I only did one at a time and thankfully the graduations weren’t drastic from x# to x# and it was pretty seemless. Really thorough! Nice vid! AT 19
I just followed the instructions and give myself time. Plenty of it. :) It's work well. In the final act when I inserted the thing in the box hole something not quite with I expected because the locking plete above was not fully pressset so the key not going to 90 degree....and the key in open position not free also.... I experienced some 20 second of sorrow... But eventually everything goes to normal when I discovered the problem. Thank you for your effort.
Thanks! This saved me hours of frustration and probably a new lock set. I had done some locksmith work as a kid but the Video and the suggested grease usage were excellent.
Great instructions! I wish you made this a few weeks ago. I did my 2020 africa twin and used the provided instructions. It worked, but your method looked a lot easier.
Thank you for the detailed instructions. Just fitted my Transalp 750 50lt Top Case with the same motorcycle key. The side panniers follows now that i know how to make them.
Thank you so much for this great video. When I saw the kit for the top box I thought I would not be able to do this. Your patient explanation of what to do put me at ease, and after carefully doing exactly what you said, I was able to complete this install. Again, thank you sir 🙏
I really appreciate you doing this video.... great explanation and I totally messed up first go around, then found my mistake by starting over. Again, fantastic... thank you
Thank you! I thought I would have to go to the dealer and be charged for "keying" these tumblers! So cool to learn this stuff! Really appreciate your time.
Before you turn the cylinder around, secure the pins with a transparent tape. So you prevent the pins and springs from falling out when you turn them to them down. Also you secure the pins from misaligning hence making it difficult to insert the key. Remove the tape before inserting the cylinder into the pannier. Excellent video because the original description does not tell you that the pins must not extrude from the underside of the cylinder.
That made an impossible task doable thank you. I had a problem that some of the pins kinked as I put them in and went into the wrong holes at the bottom, but fiddling around and leaning the barrel on its side helped keep them straight. Also noticed, too late to be useful, that for me the bottom pins were a mirror image of the top ones, possibly because my key can be inserted either way up. Too confusing to think about !
Thanks for this. Used it for the lock cycliner in an OEM 45L top box for my 2019 Honda X-ADV. This video made it a simple task to match the new lock cylinder to my bike key. The printed instructions that came with the topbox were somewhat baffling.
Absolutely first class “how to video”i must admit I completely forgot I needed to make up the key lock myself when i ordered the panniers,my skills and patience are very limited when it comes to doing work on my bikes, watched the video all the through once, then started it again and pausing it as i built the barrel….i put the panniers on my Honda Forza 750,i have been left with two clear see through sheets, can not make out what they are for,its listed as URL paper…..once again thanks for the video……Steve
Springs: according to manual there are 13 silver (small) and 2 black (big) springs. Black spring goes only for the Stopper Tumbler (in video called Locking Pin or Locking Pawl) so actually there is one spare black spring.
Tks for your help but can I MATCH this lock on the video with smartbox. the key of the smartbox is with teeth on the top and under and a grove in the middle? Tks
Just completed all three of my locks! I can say, your video was highly informative, I saved hundreds of dollars from doing it myself vs the dealership work!!! Thanks a million.
Great video! It worked like a charm. However, once I placed the cylinder (with the key as illustrated) into the pannier, having heard it click all the way down, and after the turn to lock worked, as I tried to remove the key (turned from the lock position to open), the cylinder came out with it. Thoughts?
Thank you for the excellent tutorial. Hopefully there are more to come for me and my 2018 Africa Twin with Honda OEM panniers. I read that 2018 through 2020 are all the same. I have one question. You demonstrate filling all of the slots with tumblers which is very clear to me. However, the panniers came with an instruction sheet (Publication MII 15641) and on page 6 item 13 it indicates 2 of the 4 slots used and the other 2 not used with no explanation. Does it matter? Can you help clear this up so I can get started. If using all 4 will still still work, good I'll go for it. Thanks, Deke NE Michigan
@@SkyhookStudios Thank you for the reply. However, I chose to go with the instructions from Honda by leaving out the tumblers in question and the install went perfectly. I suspect though, that it may have worked either way, but thanks anyway.
My 2020 and newer Africa Twin OEM Polypropylene Top Case instructions also omitted the last two tumblers but I elected to install them without issue. Also, if you look closely at the profile of the key opposed to where each tumbler inserts into the cylinder you can closely predict which tumbler number to use. The deeper the cut in the key opposite the the tumbler location, the higher number tumbler you need.
Hi, probably a silly question - two cylinders for two panniers, same key though - so the little picture map that you drew, it should be exactly the same for both…. right? Thanks!
This tutorial was fantastic and made a difficult task relatively easy. I encountered a problem after the lock assembly, I can insert and remove the key when the lock is in the “locked position”, but can’t remove the key when it is in the “unlocked” position. Does anyone have any insight as to what the problem might be?
@@SkyhookStudios thanks for the prompt reply! As soon as I hit the “send” button on my initial message, I thought “wait, I bet they designed it that way so you can’t leave it unlocked”. Nighttime cold medicine strikes my dumb self again, hahaha!
@@SkyhookStudios thank you but my latch mechanism was not installed and the female part that receives the lock Barrel was not installed in the latch mechanism either. It was in about six or seven different parts. I figured it out eventually hahaha took about 3 hours
@@SkyhookStudios hi, great video and it certainly does the trick. However, if you go to a honda dealer, can't they tell you which of the a/b and X 1/6 pinns have to go in each slot based on the key code?
I don't believe so. I've keyed tumblers like this for Chevy, Ford, Mazda, Toyota, and a few others and it's always that way. I think since you could have changed to a different key at some point during ownership, they don't have the specific info stored.
It looks very daunting at first, but this video made light work of it, just stop the video until your happy with each pin, if I can do it anyone can Thank You
