Best. RU-vid video. Ever. I had the blower off, cleaned and replaced in under 2 hours on my 2008 pilot. I left the seat in and just removed the glove compartment and crossbar. Easily saved me a few hundred bucks by avoiding the mechanic.
Thank you for doing this. Saved me a ton of time. Taking the seat out was no big deal...less than 10 minutes and made the whole repair so much easier. Findings? Two mice apparently decided the blower cavity would make a nice nest. Unfortunate end for the little critters...
Extremely Useful video! Although, I wound up not removing the seat or glove compartment, it was extremely useful for folks who might need the information to create some more room when digging in there. Definitely took the passenger side kick plate off and pealed back some of the carpet for ease of accessing the most difficult screw. After double checking the posted video a couple of times to make sure I located the correct screws, it was a fairly easy process. Took some contortion maneuvering to get under there, but I found a "comfortable" position and away I went. I pulled out the blower, found a big ole mouse in there, and cleaned it out. After I patted myself on the back for a job well done, I put it back together and buttoned it all back up. Because I am not mechanically gifted, I was incredibly surprised it only took me an hour. I can see this not taking an hour for the ones who don't easily fit under there, and especially for ones who don't have patience for extremely tight spaces and small screws. 10/10 for awesome information and content.
Mr. Steve you’re the real MVP. You’ve saved me money + a lot of trial and error with your detailed explanations. I was able to remove gravel that was causing a very noisy fan and the sound is now all gone. Thank you!
I love the future telling intro… “maybe” this will help someone else and it sure did! I have no experience but was able to do this alone and remove an unfortunately dead mouse. Saved me tons of money from a shop I’m sure and taught me something new! Thank you so much Steve!
Thank you! Your video saved me a bundle!! The dealer wanted 2hrs of labor plus $200 in parts for what I was able to do quickly in my driveway with basic tools and some help from your video!
Thanks Steve! I cleared the leaves out of the blower and now this project is crossed off my to do list without needing to remove the seat for this 5'4" girl.
Thank you for putting together this video on the removal and cleaning of the blower motor. We also own a 2007 Pilot, and the blower motor is steadily becoming more noisy. I wasn't sure if it will need to be replaced or just cleaned out, so this really helps me with pulling it out and making the determination of next steps.
Thank you SO much! Pulled the fan out and it was full of pet food and one expired mouse. Couldn’t get it back together, rewatched your video and saw that I had it oriented wrong. You saved me $$$!!!
Thank you! This was great. Took me a total of about 2 hours to do this on my 2003 Honda Pilot . I had 3 pieces of plastic in my blower. Make sure you check up into where you pull the fan down. One of the pieces was up there, and I put it back together, and it still made a noise . I had to take it apart again to get the third piece of plastic. Also, I used a 11/32 ratchet on the blower nut/screws. Dealer said it was a blown motor and would cost $385 to replace.
Awesome Video man! I took my blower motor out and found a wasps nest inside! I opted to leave the seat in this time, if I ever do it again I'm for sure taking it out. Thanks for the awesome guide!
Thank you for your video, just got a 2006 Pilot, bad vibration and noise from the blower motor. Wish I could post a picture because I couldn't believe it, like 2-3 dozen acorns in the blower motor.
Thank you for this video! The two biggest tips were taking the seat out and using the flexible bit driver! I'm 6'5" and taking that seat out made it super easy instead of contorting myself to get in there.
Fan is making a bit of noise most likely spinning and warping slightly with a mouse in it, but at least it doesn't stink of mouse carcass anymore. 2005 Pilot, and it was MUCH easier to put the glove compartment back on by not tightening the metal cross brace bolts and screws all the way, closing it, putting the driver's side bolt on, and then opening it to put the passenger's side bolt back on, and then tightening the cross brace bolts and screws. (Otherwise that passengers side bolt is ungodly hard to get back in!) I only had two seat plugs to unplug and my airbag light is now on...ill try disconnecting the battery, letting it sit for 15 minutes, and reconnecting it to see if it clears. Helpful video!
I just cleaned out my blower motor today, it was very easy all thanks to you Steve. Now that annoying humming sound is gone , I can enjoy my ride once again
My 2011 Honda Pilot blower motor starting making a whining noise. So I removed the glove box and kick plate and side panel then removed the fan and an old parking valet ticket fell out of the plastic wheel. Lol. I could have just removed the cabin filter and checked for debris. Just fyi for anyone else that runs into a squeaky motor lol. Thanks for the video it did help
No need to remove the seat. Use a 1/4" stubby ratchet with 1" extension on the 8mm bolt that's hard to get at. I've done a few Pilot blower motor R&R's and it takes about 15 - 20 mins. You don't remove the glove box door. You do pull off the passenger door kick plate and the fuse box cover ,.(they just pull off). Another tip is pull the carpet back under the blower motor.
Thank you so much! I took my wife’s car to a mechanic the other day and set up an appointment after I explained my problem. He took a quick look and saw that there was evidence of a critter. I looked up what he talked about and found your video today. Came home from work and hammered it out in a couple hours. Same exact issue. That back screw was a damn bear-cat to get in and out.
Currently dealing with this issue. Thank you for the video. When you said it was caused by mice I cursed out loud. I just had a mouse make a nest in my trunk
Steve - Thanks for this video. It helped tremendously with getting to that rear screw. My son's car had 1" x 1" three pieces of paper towel get ingested somehow into the fan and that was enough to make one heck of a weird sound when the fan was at full speed. I did manage to get the fan out without removing the seat, but it did take a few tries on the re-installation of that back screw with the flexible shaft.
Thanks for the video. Helped me do the job quickly. No need to take the seat out. I used a 10mm socket with flex shaft to get the fan bolts out. I was on my back initially, but did the majority from my knees. Pretty easy. I found a parking voucher in my fan. Took me less than an hour including parts run to get a cabin filter. Thanks again.
What about the passenger air bag circut and removing the negative battery cable. The Hanes repair manual recommends in hooking the negative battery cable and waiting three minutes also point the front wheels strait and put the key in the lock position.
Thanks for the video! After watching your video and another one, I went ahead to see if I could fix mime with the same issue. I found a mouse in the blower fan, as you suspected. I wish I could attach the photo here!
Thank you so much for this video!! I didn't remove the seat because I am short but one thing that helped me was a headlamp!! AND I just about stripped that far back blower screw and turns out the head of it was a 5/16 and I was able to put it back in using that.
The yellow harness is part of the airbag system. DO NOT unplug or plug in those connectors unless you disconnect the battery first and wait 30 minutes before touching it. There is a potential to set off the airbags. I'm an auto shop owner who has been in business since 1998.
Excellent advice. I did a video on replacing a turn signal switch on my sons car, and mention why the battery should be disconnected for safety. But did not consider it on this repair. Another thing that comes to mind, my sons cars computer didn't like him unplugging his seat harness. Through a code. I think it was the seat belt tensioner. So looks like its better to just disconnec battery for any electrical repairs.
Thank you very much for that video Steve that was my problem in my Honda my blower was full of oak leaves and filter was very badly clogged got it done and 30 minutes and didn't even have to take out the seat
You don't have to take out the screws . There's clips right on top of that bar code on the time stamp of 12:27 . After you loosing it up that whole unit will come down.
Thanks for the tips. Although, I don't think that I'll be needing to take out the seat (5'2"). You kinda cracked me up with your phone calls. Definitely made it REAL! Will be doing this soon as the very loud noise is driving me batty and its like 22 degrees outside...need my heat!
I've learned that tip about removing the seat before, and it is an excellent one. Especially if you are installing custom stereos, alarms or remote starts. That's where I've used it the most.
Thank you so much Steve! This is the gate way video to me replacing the Evap coil on my sisters 08 Pilot At least I know how most of the trim pieces come out and blower motor assembly is removed. Again, thank you sir.
Thank you for very elaborated and to the point explanation. This will save me lot of time from guessing and get the work done. Of course save $$ in this economy.
Thank you for the clear explanations. Helped us tremendously and saved us $$$$. Dead mouse and tons of nest material in the blower. Why doesn't Honda put some sort of screen to prevent this from happening?
Thanks so much Steve for the video! I was able to clean out my motor this morning! I was able to do it with out removing the seat thankfully because I wouldn't have been able to get it out by myself. I'm only 5''3' so it has it advantages sometimes! I had a dead mouse in ithere, I about died when I saw it 2 inches from my face but alls well that ends well I suppose? Haha. Keep up the good work, I don't know what I'd do without kind folks like you who take a little extra time to help someone else.
Excellent video and whoever or whatever team designed the access to the cabin air filter and that last screw for the fan should be smacked. I expect to find this type of design element in my Jeep but not my Honda. My daughter who drives our 2006 is very thankful that the fan no longer "screams" at her. Great job.
I put a bench, the height of the bottom of the door to support my back, avoiding having to take the seat out. You're at an angle, but in a workable position.
Thank you for the video. I’ve been having the same problem and now know how to fix it. That third bolt in the back holding the plate in is a PITA to get at, but at least I know what to do now.
Very thorough explanation. Maybe overboard for this job but that's fine. BTW, you can get that filter on Amazon for $8 bucks. Must be about time for you to replace it again. :)
Steve Watroba, I thank you big time. After struggling trying to get under the dash for a hour across a couple of day. I watched your video. . . Taking the seat out saved my back. Also very helpful was the flex extension. I have too that I rarely use it is the best way to get that back screw out.
Thank you for this video! My 03 Pilot was having the same issue with the noisy fan. There were just a few leaves in there, but between getting those out and replacing the filters the AC works much better and is not nearly as loud. The screw in the back was miserable to get out, though -- I need to get one of those flexible bits!
Easier than removing seat and jockey box is to use a mirror to remove the 3 screws. Took me 45 minutes in and out, hope this saves time for some people
Thanks! Im 6'2...same process if you need to change the blend door acuator! Use a flexible camera probe. You look like Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers!
Thanks! Mine actually had a plastic bar going across, in addition to the metal one. I couldn't just move the plastic piece, so I had to bend it down to get the filter replaced.
I just replaced the blower motor on my wife's 2007 Pilot and there is absolutely no need to remove the glove box or the seat. Yes you will have more space if you remove them but I was still easily able to do the swap in about 15 minutes from my knees and I only had to remove the small trim piece on the right side of the passenger floorboard. By the way I am 5' 10" in height and weigh 235 lbs so I'm definitely a bigger guy and it really wasn't that tight for me.
Agree 100%. I did 2 Pilot blower motor replacements last week. The key is using the right tool to get at the 8mm bolt that's hard to get at. I recommend a 1/4" stubby ratchet with a 1" extension on the 8mm socket.
This video doesn't work for a 2015 honda pilot. I watched it an believed that i needed to remove the whole lower unit to take the fan and motor out. However it was just those 3 screws on the bottom you told us not to touch. Wasted some time messing with it before figuring it out. Hopefully this will save someone time.
I was able to pull the fan motor without removing the seat...your video was helpful, but the seat thing is a bit unnecessary. I found a dead mouse in the fan once I got it out...no wonder it was vibrating!
I found a peanut. And not too long ago, a tree frog decided to live in my dash, he would crawl under the dash at the window level. Finally caught the frog, never did see the squirrel.
Yes Sir...I’m doing a follow up on our talk on septic tank maintenance and or replacement. This is not a sales inquiry but rather a much needed environmental issue that you should be passionate about. Please respond at your earliest convenience.
What did you do to not this happen again?. once a few mice got inside the car door and died, later I could not drive my car even with all windows open, the smell was awful
We found the ultimate solution.....traded the car in for a newer one. Sorry to hear about your problem. I used to repair hot tubs, and I know that smell all too well.
If the blower is loud does it prevent from the ac to blow cold air? I put in 2 cans of freon worked for a week freezing cold air now nothing. I hear the motor making a loud noise coming from the passager area.
Even if the blower fan is noisy. if you feel it blowing air, it's not the issue. You may have a leak in the system, allowing the new freon to have leaked out.
thx for the info. How long did the job take you, start to finish? Im looking at buying an older ridgeline that needs the blower motor changed :) Thx for the info awesome video!
Sorry, I'm not sure. You could try going to a site like rockauto, put in the info for one car, see what part number the blower is, then do the same for the other model and see if it uses the same replacement part number.
