NOTE: There is a DEBATE on my "Dead Cold Motor" for the valves. This is the best way from my experience to get a consistent result when you do your valves.
IF you feel you can not do this correctly and you are in Houston my brother and I can do this for you (for a fee) so please contact me if you want this done.

COLD MOTOR before you start!
NOTE: There is a DEBATE on my "Dead Cold Motor" for the valves. This is the best way from my experience to get a consistent result when you do your valves but by all means, explain why you warm your motor in the comments.
GOAL: The goal of all of this is to have the valve last match the numbers below but change the shim to the correct size. When you measure if it's too tight try a thinner shim, if it's too loose try a wider shim. Use math if you need to.
Example: INTAKE measures .15 on the feeler gauge. Remove the shim and measure it with the caliper. Your caliper reads 1.50. Since it is too WIDE your shim should be .05 thinner. Open your shim kit and take out 1.45 and install it. Now your .10 feeler should be good (Barley dragging as you pass it in the gap).
Valve lash is to wide math:
Measured .15 - spec of .10 = .05 to WIDE
Shim is 1.50 - .05 = 1.45 (new shim size)
Valve last is too skinny math:
Measured .05 - spec of .10 = -.05 (If its negative its to skinny)
Shim is 1.50 - -.05 = 1.55 (remember minus a negative can be changed to plus a positive)
INTAKE VALVE LASH: .004 inches / .10 mm
EXHAUST VALVE LASH: .007 inches / .19 mm
Tools I used:
*Caliper

*7.48 OD Shims

*Feeler gauges

*Magnet Stick

Take your time, measure several times and you will see improvement. You will after a while start to FEEL when your bike loses power because the values are getting out of spec.

This is a GREAT video!!!! I'm sure it's a little different when the motor is still on the bike.

Not too much different. Especially if you don't have the plastics in the way like on mine 👍

Good video. However you skipped a very crucial step to show how to get to tdc on the compression stroke. You can very easily be 180° off and the lines will still line up.

I have the cold start issue. Inhave to hold the throttle so it stays on. Would you recommend to change the whole motor and rebuild the old one latwr down the road?

those shim kits dont go any smaller than 1.20, even the more expensive hot cams kit doesnt have smaller than that..from my understanding if youre already at 1.20 shim its time for new valves
@SmallEngineVelocity
@SmallEngineVelocity Год назад
Yea I realized that was why I swapped the motor … I had actually forgot that. Still my example I made , I hope the point was understood. Sharp observation BTW

You didn’t mention how to find the correct TDC, your explanation could send many people 180 degrees off.

@RealPeople.
@RealPeople. 11 месяцев назад
@@jasminerogers9971 anytime you are adjusting valves there is a method to finding true TDC, the OP did not clearly explain how to actually find it by observing the position of the cam lobes.

Noboddddyyyyyyyy explains how to make sure you're on the compression stroke lol
@TheRolfano
@TheRolfano 8 месяцев назад
The OP did not necessarily find TDC on the compression stroke. He should have because 50% of the folks will get this wrong and will have a mess on their hands. The OP needs to correct this.

So I've seen this question before but anyone know how to fix if the rocker arm sticks open. Like stuck as a duck, and I've tried fennageling it but no dice. Could take it apart but I figure it'll explode like a Swiss watch or something
