Jake Dawson, last three words “in my opinion”. Others have some sweet looking SxS’s but for me, I’m liking the Talon the best for appearance.

Not really they just stole Yamaha the design as usual. They're a very predictable company a year before this came out I said it was going to be a red yxz with a Honda motorcycle engine. And that's exactly what they gave us.

Im a Yamaha atv guy but one of my riding buddies just bought a Talon and iv been really impressed with how it works ! I really like the fact that it has the automatic shift option so you dont have to paddle shift if you dont want too.

Hello, since I bought my first utv in 2016, you have been my favorite show, plus you guys visited my country Costa Rica, and you have an idea what kind of terrain and countryside we have. Since then I’ve seen all your shows and for me listening to your opinions and reviews is a priority, since they are very professional. I first owned a maverick 1000 2016 and had it for 18 months, lots of troubles with the unit and the dealer here that sucks, but I did enjoyed it a lot, I put more than 5000 km in roads like the ones you rode here. And since beginnings of 2018 I own a beautiful Polaris RZR 1000 XP with oem wheels and 30” tires after I 3000?km, and I love the feeling and versatility with 30”. I had never had any clutch issues, also 30” tires sleep less than 29 when you floor it up. My RZR has more 7000km and I love it. It is very reliable and smooth. I hope you come back to Costa Rica. Please keep safe and in the meantime keep social distance...

Bought a '19 model X in Jan 2020. Two major complaints are a) stiff suspension for slow riding (works great at speed). b) low gear shifter engagement is temper mental. Otherwise I LOVE my Talon. There are so many transmission options available you can basically do anything you want at any time. Sport mode is a blast, sounds like an Indy car going down trails! But at the same time, all the transmission options can be overwhelming to a new UTV driver. Manual Mode, High Auto Mode, Sport High Auto Mode, Low Auto Mode, and paddle shifts are allowed at any time. Manual shifting ATVs is almost a prerequisite to knowing how to use this transmission. The paddle shifters are great because they allow you to override the automatic up or down at ANYTIME, then it goes back into automode when the next shift is detected. That's genius! Full manual mode is terrific for slow technical situations like rock crawling to prevent unwanted upshifts. Engine braking is nice. Seats are firm but comfy. Drivers seat slider is easy to use even when dirty. I had to wait 10 years for Honda to make a RZR competitor! They had plenty of time to study and copy its features. Have enjoyed all my RZRs over the years but this is a driver's machine and seriously fun!

Dirt Trax TV ah yes Honda Atv division part of the Power sports. But yes i agree they do but if they did it wouldn’t be fair to other Atv Manufacturers. Since Honda Has it Automotive Division as well.

@@dirttraxtv You also have to remember, Hondas ATV Division focuses directly on Utility, this why their quads are called Rancher for Ranchers, Foreman for working. Etc, and for that, they make decisions for purely reliability, thus why they are so reliable and so praised, And their Gear on Gear transmissions make it more fun. People forget, it's not the speed, it's about the fun, and CVTs, dare I say, aren't very fun. The Hondas always feel faster because of their dynamics.

Good video ! We have a green 1000R Love it! I would agree that the center console is my top gripe about the machine. There is plenty of room above the steering column for one. I also dont like that they couldn't use a car style oil can instead they went with the internal canister style. That said the ride is super comfortable there is plenty of room for both passengers. This is the first SxS that I almost enjoy being a passenger more than the driver. Edit: it needs a winch. The fact that it doesn't come with one from the factory is annoying just bake it into the cost already.

If you need bluetooth/ infotainment....touchscreen GPS, cell phone....edit- you don't need to go biking. Stay on Xbox.

Great review. I agree with you on the center mounted gauges....it's very difficult to see them there. The only reasons I could think of, for Honda putting the gauges in the center of the dash, is so the passenger can see them as well. Nobody cares if the passenger can or can't see the gauges. If they did it because of room, they should have made more room above the steering column. Lastly could it be, because a lot of cars and trucks have information center located in the center of the dash...I'm not crazy about that either, but that's a different channel. Too much info, on a small screen, half way across the vehicle. Good grief, hopefully they fix that. I will step down off that soapbox now.... Thank you.

Only reason I can think of why they put gauges in middle is because paddle shifters were blocking gauges. I agree don’t like in the middle

I'm guessing it's for the overseas markets with the steering on the right, this way all units will use the same instruments....... very much an engineering in the shop vs on the road solution ;)

A few months ago I was in the market for a new 2020 side by side, I was down to the maverick sport 1000R or this talon. I got to try both and the Honda was decent, but after riding the maverick sport and the talon back to back i found the talon noticeably rougher. I also found the transmission was always in the wrong gear like most Hondas are for normal but spirited riding, although it was an improvement over any Honda ATV i ever used. the doors though finished nice have that gap in the bottom that i found was good for throwing mud and water into the cab, I also absolutely despise the center gauges. overall the machine is impressive for there first try at a sport SXS but the maverick just beat it in basically every way for me personally. Fit and finish is just that tiny bit above, great gauge cluster, great doors that don't open like suicide doors. It has just as much power but personally I enjoy the delivery on the CVT more and it rode nicer for sure the plushness was noticeable over the Honda. With some changes the talon can be not just a really good machine but a great one but im not sure i trust Honda to make the small changes needed any time soon as they move at a snails pace with such things.

My wife and I are upgrading from a 2019 Wolverine X4 to the 2022 Talon x, I can not decide between the regular model or the "Live valve" we are pretty normal riders, no jumps or highspeed. So my question is do I spend the extra 2 thousand on the live valve? or with normal trail riding will I even know the difference.? Thanks in advance and I love all your videos!

Is it a matter of saving the money or just where it is worth spending? The difference in suspension will be noticeable, but if you didn't upgrade, you would still have great suspension and a ton of fun in this machine. If you're just a regular rider and less concerned with performance you could get away without spending, but if you did get the upgraded shocks, you would not regret it.

I have owned mine, ( Honda Talon 1000x ) for less then a month and already have 1300km's on it lol. its been a great machine and one of the best purchases I have made in years :) a few minor things with it. 1. I'm a taller guy ( 6feet2inch ) and 350lbs lol bigger guy. while driving I found my knee would hit and rub on the center consol. I ended up buying some sticky back foam to put on so my knee has somewhere soft to rest while driving. 2. The seatbelts are almost too short for my fat body lol. I'm looking to see if there are longer belts but have not no luck so far. 3. The very top end of the Fuel tank is a PAIN IN THE ASS lol. you have to take extra care when filling to the top otherwise if foams and overflows even at a very low rate. 4. The back end KICKS LIKE A MULE when doing higher jumps. You MUST watch your speed and exits on ramps when playing around or you will end up on your roof easy! i think newer drivers to SXS's might have an issue with it if they don't pay attention. besides all these few things i still absolutely love my talon 1000x. If any of you are out in Nova Scotia hit me up and we can go for a ride!!

The Talon was outdated the day it was released. They began the build in 2012 and dinked around with it for years. It was built to compete with SxS's from 2012, thus the low suspension travel. An there's nothing to fix the bucking. Shock Therapy says to hang weight off the rear.

I agree with about everything you guys said in the review except the suspension. The talon 1000x is hands down the roughest riding 64” machine on the market right now. It’s far from being plush. I ended up going with a KRX and it’s stock suspension is unbelievable i absolutely love it!

Did he say GOG is better? Don't think he did. We're pretty much aligned across the board that we prefer CVT. It's the shift points of the paddle shifters that make it fun. Unless there's the correct power to match the CVT - This Honda needs more jam.

The 4wd is basically a reverse antilock brake system. It uses the brakes to drive the wheels. You literally cannot tell when its happening. It is absolutely seamless and as good as any diff lock out there.

Nice machine. I had a chance to drive one last year. Honda Canada lended the City of Markham a Talon 1000X....to collect garbage with during a city hosted event. No kidding. Heck, THAT machine you just tested may be the same one. Did it smell okay?

I have found that with my talonx the throttle pedal seams to soft for some trails and I end up bouncing on the pedal also Tyra with our riding the rims are too big and are prone to dents and pinching the tire

The Talon X rides like a log wagon stock, especially on rocks. I put a full set of Shock Therapy springs on mine and I bought a gate hinge and bolted it to the floor. Use the hinge as a floor mounted pedal and it pushes against the stock pedal. Buttery smooth ride now.

i have found that if you go into manual and keep your rpm up I dont get the bouncing as much. I find it worse going down hill then up hill and thats with 1200km's under my belt lol.

As nice as the talon is.. id love to see them be a force in offroad racing and competitive iv seen one or two in the championship offroad /morr series. And its at the back of the pack.. we know honda has the ability to be a front runner

Did you miss the 2020 Baja 1000 where Jaime Campbell crossed the finish line OVERALL first in UTVs? He had a 10 minute penalty which put him 2nd overall UTV (won his class). They have won their class at almost every off-road race since then.

@@theingobeck4772 I did miss that. Here in the Midwest in the championship offroad amsoil offroad series two talons were in the sportsman class last year. And never did very well. The sportsman, pro am, and pro classes are all Yamaha, polaris, and can am this year

Honda needs to start selling their stuff with winches. Top of the line off road vehicals yes.. and you pay for it too but to have to drop another 6 - 800$ Canadian on a winch and mounting before leaving the dealer is what pushed me away

I’m biased but I feel the YXZ (especially the 19-20) is a far superior machine in literally every way. I encourage buyers to look at them both very closely. The YXZ with its divorced transmission and triple cylinder engine will far outlast Honda...

Honda needs to get with the 21st century on their four wheelers the 520 is a great machine but they desperately need a 850cc or 1000cc quad when you see what they can do with this talon 1000x.

I drove the Talon when they first came out. I absolutely hate them. I found the dash switches a poor choice because they are not a standard size so anything you add later wont match them. I too dont like the display and found it hard to see . The transmission was always searching and in the wrong gear. The ride was typical Honda harsh and the turning radius was measured in acres. The thing I think I disagree the most with you on though is the power. It was hands down the slowest SxS I had ever been in. Also the "facts" you presented about the transmission being more efficient in getting power down is only partially true if you ignore the fact that the added weight of the gears and clutch are more rotating mass that steals HP. Studies that take ALL that info and factor it in have proven that there is no real difference between CVT and direct drive at those HP ranges. I think the honda does fit a niche though. If you are not really looking for a sport SxS because the trans doesnt really do hard riding well its ok. If you are not looking for the fastest thing out there then I think it does ok. I think the Honda will probably be the most reliable one out of all its competition but I cant say I would ever want to own one.

Agree that Honda's often seem to be searching for the right gear. I like the paddles for manually changing gears. Didn't find the ride harsh, but it isn't my favourite. Plus, I think all these SXS could use more power. Your last point got cut off there, but appreciate you sharing your opinion especially based on your personal experience.

Have a trust issues with Honda, they sold me vtx 1800 knowing they had engineering problems. You had to hang off the left side if tried to use cruise control. You see they don't make them now ?? I've owned 5 or 6 honda but that one left me cautious about Honda .

Man, it was totally on me. I'm usually better about keeping track of these. Like I posted earlier, I think this video has it out for me. Even after forgetting to post it I posted it at the wrong time and messed up the AM and PM. It's like like a reoccurring nightmare that keeps haunting me....

Come on Dirt Trax , it rides smooth ??? That’s a laughable statement .its a bunking bronco period. Both talons are the roughest riding SXS ‘s I’ve ever rode in my entire life. put $1600 on the side for Shock Therapy to revalve all four shocks.

That's awesome that you went to Shock Therapy. We'd really like to work with them in the future. I'm sure for what you needed, they did an amazing job to get your Talon to ride the way you wanted. We stand by our comments based on our experience with this stock, 64-inch wide trail machine.

Dirt Trax TV take both Talons to the mountains of WV , ride for 15 mins then hop into a RZR Or Maverick of the same price range and I will guarantee, you will with agree me. I like the Talons but suspension wise, they are terrible out of the box.

This is something that I'm really debating on between a Talon and KRX 1000. I've never owned a SXS and I don't want to spend money right out the box to fix something. It seems the majority of reviews knock the Talon's ride quality including Shock Therapy. They also mention the smaller low profile tires that are prone to pinch flats. On the other hand most all reviews seem to indicate the fit and finish is better than indicated on KRX 1000 reviews. Unfortunately, none of the dealers in the Louisville, KY area have land for test riding and it doesn't appear there are any scheduled demo rides on either manufacture's website. Primary locations I'll be riding are Dirty Turtle and Rush Off-road parks in KY and the Hatfield & McCoy trails. Dirt Trax, I can generally ignore some harshness as a driver because I get hyper focused but I'll be carrying a passenger most of the time and I wprefer that she not be rattled to the bone. Between the two machines, which one in your opinions will provide an overall more enjoyable ride for the passenger? Thanks!

I'm not doubting your experience and I agree the Mavericks and RZRs have superior suspension. If you were wanting your Talon to ride like a RZR or Maverick, I'm sure Shock Therapy hooked you up.

I like how a lot of can ams displacement is around 950-975cc and they all it a 1000. Honda and Kawasaki at least give you 999cc.

Impossible to get a unbiased review these days. With RU-vid channels being sponsored and afraid to ruffle any feathers its nearly impossible to get the real truth. To sum it up... The talon is terrible! glad I sold mine. Review based on a 4 seater live valve. Stock tires are garbage. I got 2 flats in the first 100 miles before replacing them with BFG's. Front shock wasn't clocked properly and about wore a hole in the shock body. Doors rattle even after adjusting the rubber grommets. Whoever designed the the Air filter needs to be fired. Good luck getting more than 150 miles out of a air filter before its covered in dirt. Front differential will most likely have a nationwide recall in the future. Gauges are in a terrible spot. Gear engagement when shifting to low is hard to get into. Had to adjust the linkage when it was brand new. Leg room isnt the greatest, the dead pedal location puts your left leg in an awkward spot. The throttle is a excessively sensitive, good luck keeping a steady throttle. Your right shine hits up against the corner of the dash and center console. Several Body panel pins have come out, body panels no longer aligned only after 200 miles. The DCT is a love hate. It never seems to be in the right gear when using Auto. Id rather replace a belt in 15 minutes than be stranded with a broke transmission/clutch. Rear suspension geometry is a joke. The chassis is the stiffest and harshest ride Ive ever seen on a SXS, if your looking for plush you will never get it with the Talon. The live valve has a lot of hype but with only two adjustments Normal/Sport it certainly doesnt perform as one would like. Power steering is pretty tight and should have more assist. Half doors allow a lot of debris to fly into the cab. To top it off. The cage is 2" material but paper thin thickness. I wouldn't trust my life or families life in the event of a rollover. If you want a 2 seater N/A machine consider the KRX. Hopefully they come out with a 4 seater in a few months.

These Talons are actually terrible to drive at slow speed. They lurch so bad they are almost impossible to start slowly and smoothly. Honda just really screwed up on this one.

The doors are dreadful. I have have the Can Am sport 1000R (rock crawler) and the automotive quality normal doors are worth their weight in gold. It's time for the skimpy suicide doors to go extinct. Also, in tests, the CVT used far less energy than originally thought. The standard 15% doesn't work without REAL dyno numbers to back up the claims. PLEASE quit sucking up to Honda until they build something ground breaking. For now, they did just OK, using off the shelf motorcycle parts, like Yamaha, that have not been proven long-term.

Thanks for your comments and appreciate you being a subscriber for a whole year!! Let's keep in mind that this video is TEN MONTHS OLD and was produced shortly after the Talon first dropped! I admitted right out of the gate...and in the title...and in the description I forgot to upload it. As a long time subscriber, you've watched our videos and MUST know we prefer CVT, HOWEVER, the paddle shifters are pretty baller. This is a decent initial pure sport offering from Honda and there's loads of room to evolve this SXS. We are hopeful Honda continues to evolve this platform rather than let it run stagnant like the Rincon.
