My dad at 76, has a 2019 Talon 1000X , he has had it for 1.5 years and they live in AZ and he has put, no typo here, 15,000 miles on his. The only thing he has had to fix was there is a plastic ring in the transmission, that would not let the rig go into low. So he tore it down replaced it for $50 and it took him a day. Honda wanted $2000 to do it. It runs like it is new, just broke in now. He also put 32s on his with some jeep tires. But yes 15,000 miles. My husband and I live in AL and are looking at getting one.
Great video. I just bought one and am picking it up in the morning. Always been a Honda guy because of the shaft drive and can’t wait to get on the trails with this buggy!!
I have to say, that is just a stunning view! My father grew up in Aztec, NM (NW corner), where his father homesteaded. My dad was a Methodist minister and we lived in Artesia for a short time. I have fond memories of going to the Methodist church camp at Sacramento, south of Cloudcroft. I've had relatives in NM from Anthony to Alamagordo, to Albuquerque, to Aztec, to Raton (my mother was raised in Roy, in the NE area). Suffice it to say that I've seen the state extensively and have always loved it. although I've driven through your neck of the woods, I've never spent any real time there. That needs to change! We have a 2019 Talon X and have been very pleased with it. We get up to the Red River/Taos/Angelfire area at least once a year and enjoy riding the mountains there. But, I'm going to have to give your area a whirl now that I'm retired (I'm 64). We live in Oklahoma City, but my heart is in the deserts and mountains. That shot across the Journey of Death Basin was just outstanding. It won me over. I have subscribed my friend. Thanks much for sharing and God bless you. Steve
Talons are so cool can’t wait to get in one eventually. After owning belt drive atvs compared to my Honda’s I have now with the shaft drive. I cringe at thinking of buying anything with a belt. I’ll walk through stuff that a belt 1000cc atvs have trouble with.
Looks great with the 32inch tires. Just got some for my talon cant wait to get them mounted. That was my only complaint about the talon was tire size from factory should have been at least 31inches
I own an 08 RZR 800 54 Hp, at the Time Purchased It was the Baddest thing on the planet, Went back to My Honda Roots, Purchased a Talon X absolutely love it, Nearly as quiet as a Gas Golf cart when Putting around, Stab the Throttle that transmission takes me back to my Dirt bike days, DCT and gears = a Powerband feel, CVT has been Trumped 2020
I have a 2019 Talon X. Purchased a year ago. First side x side for me after riding 450R for years..Love the machine no problems only one complaint that is The LED gas guage.. You can never read it.and other indicators are so small. You need a magnifying glass to read them. That all I have to complain about
Your opinion is just that, an opinion. Facts are power transfer to wheels in both DCT and CVT applications is the same. Difference is the CVT is in the right gear and applies max power no matter what the terrain. DCT is just guessing and gets close. Both have 13% loss from crank to rear wheels. Talon is under powered compared to like platforms like the 1000 XP or the new KRX. Like most who dont understand the cvt, you describe issue, most likely do to heavy tires that you didnt adjust your clutch to prepare for and or the clutch was never propely maintained. The vast majority of people are ignorant of the cvt and how it works.
Thank you for the view and yes I absolutely agree and don’t claim to be an expert because I’m not...... these are simply my opinions based on ownership of other vehicles that are CVT machines .... all conditions very depending on the way you have the machine tuned, this is my first DCT vehicle I will say that for me there is a notable difference. Thanks again
M K - that may be, but the weak link is the belt. Ask us stock polaris owners who had to walk back to camp. Never again a belt. My Honda pioneer is perfect.... for me. :)
@@3006USMC Yea like i said it is to complicated for some the cvt. BUT can replace a belt in less than 10 mins. DCT fails your done gotta tow it home and it does fail.
I just ordered a brand new 1000 x 4 I'm hoping to get it here sometime in February my thought is right it from one state to the next and travel around at State and just kind of tour in it is what I'm hoping the first ride I'd like to do is travel around Montana and then I want to go from Canada to New Mexico and the Continental Divide
Like my Talon X a lot. I've been on several trips with a local group of SXS enthusiasts. The comment I hear most is "how it climbs rocks and hills without drama" I like the engine breaking going down hill, that has to result in longer brake pad life. So far people breaking belts around here seems a lack of maintenance or severe use (abuse one could say). Question; I am seeing a few auxiliary lights/light bars, how is the alternator dealing with the demand?
Thanks for the view. As far as the power draw the talon system holds up extremely well. I never see the volt meter drop below 13.8 even with all the lights on and particle separator on. I also have rock lighting underneath every fender well which you can’t see in the video. Great machine. Thanks again
Excellent short video I really liked the view. I am curious how is the particle separator working, and is one particular separator enough for a talon after the turbo kit?
Now that you have a 1000 KSX, which do you like driving better, the Honda or the Kawasaki? I’m looking at getting one and I’m debating between the Honda Talon and the Kawasaki 1000 KSX. Id love the thought of the dual clutch transmission. But I think I like the looks of the Kawasaki better.
@@47rhorvath KRX yep thats what I meant. lol So the only other concern i have is that I've heard the CVT's make the car much louder. Is the noise level an issue more so than with the dual clutch transmission?
Ok cool. I checked out that Dona Ana area that you always mention. Drove it in my 4Runner since I dont have a side by side yet. It was great, best place I’ve found yet in the area to go offroading. I live in El Paso, and until now I hadn’t found any good place to go offroading. So thanks for that!
I totally agree with you! The CVT works great...but! The gear on gear ⚙️ transmission is just really cool. To have that instant power from engine to tire is a great feeling! So now it’s between the YXZ and Talon!!??
@@TheIrongutz I bet...I love how the 2017 gearing is for the dunes. The car just rips in the sand. I don’t “rock crawl” but if I did the gear reduction would be nice.
@@DUNEATV For sure! No dunes where I am but would like to try it one day. I’m not a rock crawler but we have a lot of forest service roads, trails and steep rocky stuff in the BC Rockies. I love the transmission on the YXZ, you can hold gears going downhill so you rarely have to use the brakes and the engine sound is just epic. Cheers!
3 cvt vehicles - NO problem-but theres many out there dont know how to drive and maintain a cvt or just wanna step on throttle like maniacs and dont care...drivin in wrong gear etc. - they sure break belts...
I have had 6 UTV's that had belt drives, and I have never had to change the belt in any of them. The key is to let them warm up before flooring the throttle, and keep the machine in lower gear when going slow while climbing! I have a son-in-law that has a Polaris, and he burns belts all the time, just because he doesn't do these things. My current ride is a 2019 Canam Maverick Sport XRC, and owners manual, states anything over 7 MPH, transmission should be in low range! Keep in mind this is a "ROCK CRAWLER" , designed for climbing rocks, so the clutching is much different than in other models.
Man, thank you soo much for your video and your review on your talon. I’ve been on the fence between the talon and the can am. I’m soo comfortable in the can am cause I’m 6feet tall, but I hat the thought of braking a belt while out driving around with the wife. I know you can easily change in about 15-30 min, but sometime you might be stuck is a rough area or bad weather conditions. With the Talon, your pretty much driving worry free, worse case you get a flat, easy change, but no worries regarding a belt. The only thing is that I feel a little cramped in the talon and I worry about long trips having to get cramps on my legs, not just that, but I can also see my foot bouncing on the gas peddle as I navigate through rough terrain because of being soo tall. If you don’t mind me asking, how tall are you and do you feel cramped at all in the talon. I also weigh 250 lbs. I do love the peace of mind having the reliability of the Honda’s reputation. On the other hand, love the spacious cockpit of the can am maverick and the looks as well. Rrrrrr , so hard to decide. I hope and wish Honda will make a talon just at least 6-12 inches longer for us tall folks.
the amount of power transfered to the wheels is almost identical. both have around a 20 percent power loss to the wheels. just because its a belt doesnt mean its slipping. lets see . change a belt every 2000 miles for 100 bucks and 10 minutes or change clutchpacks every 4000 miles for 700 bucks and 10 hours of work. not to mention any abuse early failures on the trail on either system. one you can change in the woods. and dont give me that they dont fail. talk to the yxz guys and pioneer guys. in stock form and mildly upgraded form the belts hold up excellent. add power and abuse high gear carry an extra belt. add power to these hondas and do more than drive up a gravel road and you'll probly get real good at clutch work. ive seen lots of broken rzrs and mavs out riding this is true. 99 percent were from rolling down the side of an 80 degree hill.
WOW a LOT of misinformation. There is NO loss as you mentioned. I think your trying to justify a belt because thats what you got. Clutch packs do not need to be replaced every 4000 miles. Its a stupid thing to say. There is a HUGE positive difference between a belt and a clutch. Quit trying to mislead people. Good luck with you old machine.
@@jimwildfire3832 miss information? i was just stating that the hp loss was debunked long ago with the old yxzs. 99 percent of powerloss comes from drivetrain components past the engine engagement point weather it be a belt, clutch, or clutch packs. as far as changing clutches in offroad vehicals in 4000 miles that is a verry genorouse number if you push it hard. now granted most of these talons will probly be driven to the barn and back and will last a long time. but if you burry it in a mudhole, hillclimb it,or just push it hard it will fail sooner than later. its a consumable part. the point i made was i would rather change a belt every 1000 miles of abuse(15 minutes and can be done in the woods)than change a clutch every 4000 miles(at least 4 to 8 hours in a shop). especially when the performance is verry equel. its kinda a no brainer for someone who rides hard.
What did you have to do to fit 32? Any change of gearing? Noticeable loss of power? I'm seriously considering getting one and 32s would be my goal. 75% trails, 25% logging roads.
They fit perfectly with out any modifications, you will feel a slight loss of power until the transmission computer re-maps itself. 20-30 miles later. Works great with 32’s
Don’t own the Talon anymore. Sorry I don’t have a list for you most of my modifications were the ARM and trailing arm guards also aftermarket tires and the SMB particle separator.
Come into Las Cruces from Hwy 70 all the way to I-25 . Take 25 north about 3 miles to the Dona Ana exit, make a right then a quick left on the paved road heading north about 4 miles. You will see the Dona Ana Mountain range on your right, pick a spot to off load and enjoy!! Hit me up when you are coming, I don't mind at all. Thanks for the view
You can, Here in Southern NM you can take your truck off road..as a matter of fact, before I ever had an off road Side by side, I took an F150 truck through a few of these trails. Nothing special needed in this area
Cool, have you ever ridden at red sands in El Paso? I have never been out to Dona Ana, but do have some buddies in Albuquerque that I have ridden with up there. I picked up a talon as well and am getting use to driving my first sxs. I have ridden ATVs and Honda pilots before, but never any sxs.
Now people are finding out to fix a Honda burned out DCT is a killer, I take a belt any day I never had a problem with a belt and go's away back to 1998 .
crazyflyboy30 I agree, have had many machines with belts, easy to replace and simple. Don’t think they will ever be replaced by a DCT...Only time will tell . Thanks for the information and for the view. Have a great day 👍🏻
I hate to tell you but many people have done dyno pulls on the Talon and it only put 70 horsepower to the ground. Whereas the rzr turbo S put 144 out of 168 to the ground. So less than 70% of the talons power got to the ground. The Rzr got 84% to the ground. Brandon Pierce has a video on it as do others. That being said it is a nice machine but the Dct is overrated and as soon as you put the Turbo on that machine your going to blow your clutch packs out which are alot harder to change than a belt.
I completely agree and understand. Coming out of a Teryx. I guess I really feel more power at the wheels. As far as the clutch packs, If I decide to get the Turbo kit, time will tell. My buddy already has his the Jackson kit on his. 1800 miles with no issues. Time will show
How did your buddy get a Jackson Turbo? I paid for one over 3 months ago. They have not been shipped yet? Unless he’s connected.? Lol. Can’t wait for mine to get here. From the Honda engineers have been running the turbo for 2,000 plus miles with absolutely no clutch issues! 👍👍
@@LifeOnTheSkids He and his family own several motorsports dealerships through out the southwest. I wish I could get my hands on one today!!. Thanks for the views.
What is that up on the hill on the right at the 4:40 mark. Also, nice vids! Keep up the good work. You’re very informative. I can’t wait till you add the turbo kit!!!
Great point, It would be expensive, Everything has pro's and con's....However what would the cost of a modern car's electronics or trans going out....You bring up another question in my mind......As these off road monsters become more advanced, the systems also become more technical....Even My last machine the Teryx had a CVT but also complex electrical components for the engine and the 4x4 system.....it's a matter of person preference...How a person is going to use the machine and maintain it as well...Thanks for the view and the comment...Have a great holiday.
Everyone notice how ass hurt rzr or can am owners get .bottom line Honda Yamaha Kawasaki is and always will be more reliable. Japanese engineering, if can am or Polaris sold dirt bikes I wouldn't trade my Yamaha.
when i see Tim Cameron or travis pastrana race one up a bounty hill, or huck it 150 ft through the air i might take a more interesting look but since they dont really out perform anything im not going to be impressed by someone saying it feels like it puts more power down when all races and dyno pulls proves otherwise.lets face it honda came out swinging for a base hit.
It's a proven fact that a geared tranny will put more power to the ground the a belt. That being said dont compare this machine to a 200hp can am or a 180 hp polaris. Put it up to a similar machine and it hands down more power to the ground.
@@toddwilkerson5761 its proven they are similar. you dont understand. the belt is not slipping. 99 percent of power loss is through parasitic drag. pluss the honda is an auto. not just gears. it has duel clutch packs that can and will slip. its basically 900 xp or a wildcat 1000 like 10 years late and 6000 dollars more expensive.
@@toddwilkerson5761 a similar machine is 10 years old. thats the point. now a similar machine at price point is a turbo rzr or a turbo maverick. thats probly the fairest comparison.
This trans doesn't work like the one in your car or truck. Have you ever driven one. I have owned can am and have a honda now hands down there is more power at the rear wheel than a belt drive. And they have a manual mode not just auto.
@@toddwilkerson5761 dual clutch isnt new. its been in cars for years. its not magic. instead of having a small clutch pack for every gear you have a dual setup that is used and then the gears are meshed to gether with sincrinizers like a manual. still an auto. you can manually shift any auto .this just allows you to use launch control by getting the rpms up. its a fact that most of your hp loss is from drive components. not clutches or belts. if a dual clutch slips it will waste energy just like a manual, auto,or cvt. none of them slip though. furthermore an auto with a tourqe converter can waste more power but these and cvts more than negate any losses by keeping the engine closer to peak power. apon launch a cvt will quickly flash to higher rpms and stay there during launch deceleration, and rethrottle. they have been put on dynos, and raced against comparable machines.they all loose about 20 percent through the drive train. for example an xp1000 will slightly out run a talon in a drag race and it has 3 to 7 more hp. and thats on taller tires. just tell yourself whatever you need to to justify paying 5 grand more. you can get an xp1000 for well under 16k
