HONEST REVIEW PlayStation Portal 

I have it since Launch. In my working place I have strong WiFi. I work for 10 hours per night - and have "free" time during work. Playing PS5 games in this scenario, is amazing! This is the perfect device FOR ME! ❤

if you can't watch and play the Portal at the same time you need a new router, I watch my NBA games on tv and still play my Portal just fine on the same wi-fi.

To replicate the push track pad button you have to tap twice

Quick thing if you have wireless headphones connected to your ps5 you can use them on your portal

Just buy the AirFly transmitter on sale now for $25 and problem solved. I use my AirPod pro with no problem

i been using this device at work since release. love it. finally can finish back catalog, serves my purpose . its hard to do that with kids

Also, the led lights on a regular dual sense controller surround the touchpad. It was the dual shock 4 that had those lights on the top of the controller. The lights on the dual sense are on the face of the controller and I love them!

To all the guys showing this device some love and not hatin on it and have never tried it...respect. I love this thing. Money well spent.

So of you're travelling and the hotel requires you to sign in can you sign in to WiFi on your phone and hotspot it to the Portal??

You have to double tap the touch pad areas to activate them.

I really enjoyed watching this review the ramblings at the end about the Bluetooth not being on the device had me laughing.

What is the latency like when using it on the same wifi that your ps5 is on? If my wife or son is watching tv, could I still play a game like tekken? Or would the latency be bad enough to force me to change how I play the game?

You mentioned madden. Im in a comp madden league. Does playing online games have issues? I have gig internet speed at home.

For inputs where you would press the touchpad on a Dual Sense, you have to double tap the touchscreen on the Portal.

What are you going to do when you get stick drift, they didn't use the pro model where you can swap out the joysticks...

I missed my opportunity to get one, so I have no experience with it at all. However, I think it is stunning looking, the most unique handheld device I have ever seen. I really dig the aesthetic of it. I was never a PSP user or anything, so I have no affinity for a true Playstation portable device for gaming. I've heard great things and maybe one day I'll come across one. I do have a Switch, but I am not a handheld gamer. I am solely interested in this to play my PS5 in the living room while spending time with my family and maybe in my bed at night before crashing before work. Speaking of, I take my Switch to work for lunch and breaks, or slow rainy days. It would be nice to take this instead as I prefer Playstation games than Nintendo stuff.

Adding Bluetooth to this is like taking the stream delay and adding the Bluetooth delay on top of that. It would be a very unfun experience, besides the fact that Bluetooth does also mess with WiFi signal. So they would add an unpleasant experience that also decreases the performance of the stream itself which is the main purpose of the device. I’m sitting here wondering why people are wondering about this.

Can u play away from home. Ps5 hard wired to the Ethernet at home and connect the portal to a mifi hot spot ?

1 concern I have is stick drift what do u do in that scenario

I got Sony Inzone H7 and it has a surprisingly wide range. I can still get sound in my bedroom from a PS5 sitting in my livingroom. Now it'd be great if these is an option to stream game to a Portal while playing 3D audio to my headphones. I know Sony is greedy and want to sell headphones for Portal but I still has fingers crossed.

Got mine, it runs remote play way smoother than my iPad. Huge improvement for remote play in terms of user experience.

I want this device but i was not aware about it tried to get ot on release an it was sold out. Guess ill wait for restock because they are selling it for 400 to 550 on Amazon an eBay

Thanks for the video, I was excited to see that they even thought of something like this. I really only play GT7 and I wanted to see what someone said about it. It’s definitely a luxury but it will help with tv sharing. Thanks again.

1st thing i did was boot up MK1 online. It handled vs & invasion very well. . 1/2 second delay but after a few rounds and i adjusted. There's room for improvement but nothing to complain about.

I’ve been having the touchpad issue, lag and stuff like that even though I have 2 TB Internet connection and sound cutting in and out. I have fixed a lot of the issues though by adding some wires on the inside to strengthen the signal to the Wi-Fi connection because I noticed that it only has three wires on the inside of it and only one of them is for your Wi-Fi connection. The other two were actually for the new headphones which is ridiculous. I don’t know what Sony was thinking because my Phone my logitech G cloud work a lot better for some reason I was really looking forward to this device now after I fixed it it works really well a lot better than it did before I can actually walk through multiple walls and a lot farther from my house now like I can with my G cloud and my phone and it still works But I just think for something made by PlayStation it should work better than my phone and my G cloud, and it does not

You cannot use this outside your house because using internet in cafes and hotels requires a browser to get access 🤣. What a load of bs

You’re correct! As a dad with a new born baby, I did order this as soon as I could. With the baby I can’t always be at my desk we’re the PS5 is so I feel like this device could be for me.

I can't wait to get this. It is the only option to play 3A game at 1080p/60fps on the go. Besides, I've got motion sickness with big screen, this 8inch screen size is perfect.

the touch pads on screen are bad i played division 2 the pad is the map got to tap so many times needs firmware update fix

The touchpad on the touchscreen needs a “double click”. If you touch it twice it works fine!

It’s sucks you have to keep the PS5 in rest mode for it to work

Doesn’t seem like many people know this but you can use the original ps5 headphones with the portal as long as you’re home, which luckily is where I will spend most of the time using mine. No blutooth because to my knowledge the ps5 doesn’t use Bluetooth for its headphones to begin with and would most likely be laggy.

my question is this, if you have a disc based ps5, can i only play the disc that is physically in the ps5? what about any digital download games? ... i am assuming that i wont be able to play an installed game that does not have the disc present .....but if i have a digital only ps5 i can play any installed game at anytime?

the problem is not the device, if this came out 5 years ago I will say its great addition and worth to buy, but we are in 2023 and this device really is not that great when you think about it for a reason: AR glasses exist..... when you combine AR glasses + your phone + your existing PS5 controller this is what you get: 1. OLED screen 2. 20 times bigger screen that its not even comparable 3. lower latency as you using your phone to stream not another device connecting to your phone 4. its smaller 5. its lighter setup 6. you can use it with Xbox and PS 7. it gives more privacy 8. it have better sound using built in glasses speakers 9. its more portable thanks to glasses being much smaller and easier to carry 10. more battery life in phone (Hotspot consume more than Glasses consumes from your phone). 11. Bluetooth connectivity to your headphones or earbuds and I bet theres more reasons to get this setup like media consumption and other advantages...... its really infact dumb to pick this over AR glasses.... for example if your wife sleeping and you have to leave the room, you can actually stay in room and play in AR glasses it wont cause any issues..... while in Portal you wil be leaving the room to play it elsewhere and who knows if Wifi is stable there

I have my PS5 hardwired so I would suggest going that route if you can..gives me a more stable connection

Gotta double tap to activate the "click in" touch pad. Sony needs more pop up notifications on screen for this or something.

You have to double tap the virtual touchpad to simulate a “regular” touchpad press…that’s why it seemed unresponsive

I’m loving mine I have zero issues with it while I’m at home.. hands down this is the way to remote play your games if you want a portable game streaming device..👍🏻

It does have a web browser, but it's currently locked... And cloud gaming is on the way according to Hideaki Nishino (Senior Vice President, Platform Experience). The Portal has 3 antennas so Bluetooth might be added in a future update but to be fair, PS5 didn't support Bluetooth either so I wasn't surprised...

I agree. I hate that it doesn’t have Bluetooth! But once I connected my PS5 via LAN, then I’ve had 0 issues! Still needs Bluetooth and a browser

rookie question: would remote play work if you have a disc version of a game on the ps console?

Perfect device as a father of two. I’ve owned the steam deck too and this makes more sense to me. It looks weird sure but it’s the best handheld I’ve held. Steam deck was loud, battery life sucked. Playing two games of OW2 would drain the entire battery. Steam deck required a lot of tweaking too. For someone who owns a PS5 and wants to just game casually every now and then the portal is perfect. Also easy on the wallet as you don’t need to spend twice for the games you like to play.

Bought this as its Ideal for what I need. Paired with my switch I have everything I need. Just need a case for it.

What were we doing before bluetooth? Now that it's absent, is it a huge letdown? You adapt to the features it does have. I don't need bluetooth. A wired connection is fine. Hell, I've only used the speakers on it, and I'm very happy with it. A wired connection is a win, in my opinion.

Touchpad is double klick. You always have to double tap it. And if you want to use the hold function you also need to double tap and hold the second tap. Not a bug, just bad communication from Sony on how it works.

For touch pad, you double tap it. Work like a charm.

Im 100% sure that new features will be released and enabled on this device over time. The Switch didn't support Bluetooth at launch either and new iPhones are released without all the features being enabled at launch and no one seems to have a problem with that. So why is this device held to a different standard?

I really want this for Christmas!! I totally get your weird omissions irritation but for me it's not a big deal. I can take this to work instead of lugging around my 10 lb PlayStation 5 in a 4 lb carry case. With this I can have mobile diablo, or crystal chronicles, or to be able to play final fantasy, especially VII Rebirth when it comes out on leap year day! To use the touchpad you needa double tap it fast, to use it in gta if you needa pull up the menu you need to tap, then hold on the second tap.

Touch pad click = double tap. Can see it in video it didnt work until you double tapped.

I wish it was just a "share device". Being able to transfer a game and save data to a portable device, vs. Streaming to a portable device would be far more preferable.

Is it the best way to play your ps games remotely? What about a samsung s8 ultra tablet, ear buds, ps remote app and dualsense controller. These i already have and work great together, maybe better than this?

In a weird way I’m surprised and not surprised that reception to this thing has been so positive. I’m not surprised because I’ve used remote play for 11 years and it’s been a great feature and I knew the public at large under-appreciated it, but I’m surprised that this is the device that finally is making people start to appreciate it.

I love dedicated devices. Im lucky to have 1gb up and down wifi at home with my ps5 hardwired into the router so this works for me. Bluetooth is my only gripe.

I’m glad you are also a fellow product designer. We both know what’s going on here, it’s not a leading competitor for hand held individual system, they are just testing the market to see if this will be profitable as an accessory. Best believe all those upgrades and more will come to a separate hand held device!

Yesssss, i love it too! I play my PS5 more. Busy dad, two kids, work from home... All the screens in my house are being used for anything other than gaming.

I think I would Buy it but just a few months ago I bought a Backbone and I'm really happy with it. Maybe next year.

Its funny that seth complains about no Bluetooth but the thing is just a controller with a screen on it. Of course its only wired, thats how the regular controllers work audio wise
