George: "What is Holland?" Jerry: "It's a country, next to Belgium." "No, that's the Netherlands!" "Holland is the Netherlands." "Then who are the Dutch?!"
I stumbled into this movie on cable about 20 years ago and it happened to be about 5 mins into the movie. Not knowing that it was an alien made it quite a bit better.
Blake Connelly I watched it the exact same way. It does make it a ton better, because you don’t know if it’s a monster movie, or a alien movie; until 2/3 of the way through.
Somehow I never knew there was a spaceship scene in the movie. I've missed it every time I've seen the movie. Maybe that's why I've never disliked anything about it.
It is rather bad, but they kinda got there eventually. And I get why they're confused about the adjective "dutch". Because it not only refers to the people and language from the Netherlands but also to Germans and Germany in some contexts. E.g. Pennsylvania Dutch (speak German), Dutch Angle (from German Cinema). Also dutch is one of the official languages of Belgium.
NorthernLight: Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks for adding the etymology. The issue is that all uses of "dutch" come from "Deutsch" or older variants. Only in english (and a few related languages) are the people and the language of the Netherlands called dutch. The dutch call themselves "Nederlanders" and speak "Nederlands". The Germans call them "Niederländer" who speak "Niederländisch". The french call language and people "néerlandais". Only english doesn't care and basically calls them Germans....
But what if after harry potter, rupert grint went on to direct a number of successful films and became an established director. Would it be that weird if he then directed a harry potter movie?
Leonard Nimoy directed a couple of Star Trek movies. So did Jonathan Frakes. I've heard William Shatner did one, too, but I must have intentional forgotten about it. I know those being TV shows first may not count as "franchise" material, but first thing to come to mind.
God damn, Dan is amazing with impressions! You wouldn't think that looking at him too lmao. He just seems so serious but now I'm thinking that in his alone time when it's too quiet he just practices all these impressions. Please tell me it's true!
More people should be watching the commentaries on honest trailers . Always amazing . The discussions you guys have resonate with not only me but others . The passion this community has for film and the fandom is great , you guys are awesome!!!
Alright, greetings from Europe and I think this little geography interlude was even more entertaining than the rest ;o). Little secret though, at least some of us Europeans don't learn much American geography either, so don't worry. Anyway, in Belgium you have parts where they speak (mainly) French and parts where they speak (mainly) Dutch, both are official languages in Belgium. Historically the French and Dutch part of Belgium are not very fond of each other, which is why I at least have never met someone, who openly admited they spoke both languages fluently, but I believe these days kids learn both languages in school. Don't fact check me on this though. Some parts also speak German, that's only a very small region close to the border though. I am not a huge Arnold fan, but I could listen to Dan's impression of him for hours!
HAHA...no. If you watch the commentary, you'll see that Joe Starr MEANT to ask Siri..."Where ARE the dutch?" as-in, where are the Dutch geographically located. He accidentally said "Where is..." and it sounded funny.
As a kid, I totally missed that opening shot of the spaceship, yet it was still obvious to me that it's an alien given the technology being used by the Predator. The mystery is more about what kind of alien it is. Also, didn't the first trailer for Terminator 2 make it seem as if both machines are bad? I remember the Nostalgia Critic talking about that and being surprised in the theater.
It was well known that Arnold would play a good guy in T2 months before it was released. The media couldn't keep their fat mouths shut about it & ruined what could have been one of the all time great reveals.
As someone from the Netherlands, it's hilarious to see you stumble if Brussels is in the Netherlands. And thanks Dan that you clarified that you don't have to be from Amsterdam to be Dutch ;)
I remember thinking about the end credits when I was a teenager, and seeing it as the characters getting to give the audience an honored send-off. Arnold's is just a snippet because he didn't die. Realized later this falls apart with Anna. Later confirmed to have survived.
Yep, me too. As soon as Spencer said he was a punch-drunk Rocky for some reason that very image popped in my head, and then low and behold they said it out loud, lol!! Ahh, the 90s, when claymation was still a popular thing and you had shows like Celebrity Deathmatch!
From Belgium and can confirmed. People from the Netherlands speak Dutch, in Belgium we speak french and/or flemish, and flemish is a variation of dutch. It's like the french speaked in Canada, it's a variation of the actual french.
The Netherlands and Belgium are quite close together, Dutch is also the language spoken in both countries. I'd also like to say that most of us Dutchies don't know most of the states and their capitals in the US so there you go.
Sometimes I think you guys are incredibly insightful and obviously intelligent with the humour, arguments and analysis of so many films. Then you ask things like "who are the dutch?"
“Hey Siri. Is this the worst Apple commercial?” Love you guys and your silly voices and your lack of knowledge of Europe. PS: RDJ Iron Heart Movie in 2032.
I think that without the first 90 seconds that provide the "extraterrestrial" context, the perception of the film as an analogy for US involvement in Vietnam might have been to on-the-nose, and perhaps could have had a negative impact on the reception of the film. Thoughts?
Showing the spaceship at the beginning of the movie was a stroke of genius. A lot of people would have guessed that something else was out there. And many of them, when they get it wrong, they get angry at the movie, the director, the writers. "oh, no.. based on what i saw it should have been this or that.. Stupid movie , stupid writers!" There are a lot of disturbed people out there. The way they did it however, they did not really reveal a lot about the villain, except that it was an alien and everybody was happy.
I had no idea that spaceship scene was in this movie before this honest trailer! We had this on VHS for years and my brother recorded this from HBO, but now I'm finding out he missed the intro, because were we have it, it starts roughly with them in the helicopter.
I heard/read recently the spacecraft at the beginning was a studio note, in fact, I think it was added completely without McTiernan's involvement after he was done with the project...
Hi, I'm Dutch. We know Americans don't know much about us, so don't worry about that. They speak Dutch and French in Belgium so you weren't that far off. Joe's Dutch accent was pretty good actually.
Jonathan Frakes went from Riker maneuvering over chairs to directing Trek movies... So going from actor to a sequel writer/director is a new Riker maneuver...
Some actors who later went on to direct (and/or write) other installments of the same franchise: Leonard Nimoy, , William Shatner, and Jonathan Frakes on Star Trek; Ben Affleck on Justice League (though he later removed himself); Jon Favreau on Iron Man; Sylvester Stallone on Rambo (wrote the later ones) and Rocky (wrote the first, wrote and directed most of the rest); Elizabeth Banks on Pitch Perfect
