This is one of the best live action adaptations of anything I've ever seen. The amount of love, care, and respect the creator and actors have for the source material is amazing and so refreshing. The part where the played the original theme when they were sailing away on the Going Merry was so satisfying.

All the jokes aside, whatever they did I think it worked. As someone who haven't watched the anime snd manga I loved this show, and the last thing I'd expected was it to be emotional. And man it hit me many times. I can't wait for more seasons.

At the last reddit AMA, the showrunner said netflix didnt have rights from anime, just manga, so if the story exclusive to anime, they couldnt adapt it. Anime produced by TOEI, manga produced by JUMP.

my dad loved one piece too!!! i have literally never in my life gotten him to watch more than one episode of anything even stuff he says he likes. he’ll get bored and change it. he watched all of one piece with me on one saturday and it was so special to me 😭😭😭

I think there IS actually a reason for Luffy's accent being different that we will eventually see when we get more of Luffy's backstory, because of where and who he spent most of his childhood with.

You don’t need to hint anything to them. Let them watch the show in their own pace, spoiler free and hint free just like, I would assume, you did when you first started watching or reading it. One Piece is best consumed spoiler free as possible.

It's barely even a hint toward something that wouldn't even affect one's enjoyment if it were spoiled. On the other hand, what CAN affect one's enjoyment are immersion-breaking things like believing a character's accent makes no sense.

he literally raids a marine base ep 1, didnt pay for a meal and actively fought back againsed marines telling him to stop and surrender for his previous crime and then proceeds to defeat the highest bounties in the east blue showing how dangerous he is. also Has a connection to one of the most notorious pirates ever. He also somewhat brings to light corruption in the marines (unintentionally) causing people distrust and weakening loyalty towards the law enforcements. The anime at some point gave us a min reanimation of luffy's past where they explained the types of pirates and gave a word to the 2 of them, one described pirates that pillage and do whatever they want, and the other was someone who simply just did whatever they want in a not necessarily bad way. i cant remember the words but it exists somewhere and thanks to the current ark of one piece we find out why specifically he was being heavily targeted after the grand line (or we were given a decent reason, doubt it was all planned but it still adds up and makes sense)

You're thinking about Romance Dawn Version 2, which is NOT One Piece. The pirates were called Morgania (bad) and Peace Mains (good), but the Romance Dawn One Shots were earlier and purposefully different versions of the first chapters made so the real One Piece could get greenlit as a series. They're not part of Luffy's past and are not part of the canon either.

A bit of a note in japanese society accident like falling from stairs, sick, etc is how adult explained to kids when someone deceased for whatever reason including self deleted which probably what happen to kuina as she is single retainer of her clans and during her puberty she had to face the harsh reality (she did said it clearly in the show) while all his fellow start to suddenly grown and she start to stagnanting her progress regardlessly which eventually led her to 'her accident'

Because we are seeing his journey from his perspective it sometimes clouds are judgement on the lack of crimes he commits as a pirate. Remember he did raid a navy fortress and attacked the captain and other navy soldiers. That alone is wild. He was also willing to steal the Going Merry if Ussops girlfriend didn't respond favorably too. He also damaged World Government property by deflecting the cannon ball back to Garp's ship in episode 5.

Without giving too much I will say just one thing. The definition of piracy is different in the world of one piece. You don’t need to pillage or loot villages to be a pirate. Once you say the words, I am looking for the One piece you become a pirate. It’s the very idea that the government opposes any sort of pursuit for the one piece is what defines piracy in one piece. The whole point of Luffy’s character is that his freedom means directly opposing the world government and that makes him a pirate no matter how kind hearted he is.

There is no definition of piracy in the world of One Piece. And no you're confusing things. The government doesn't opppose the pursuit of One Piece. What it opposes is piracy. And are the pirates that are looking for the One Piece. Being a pirate in the real world is the same as in One Piece world. Piracy is not pillaging nor loot villages. That is just one thing that Pirates usually did. Notice, a "pirate"(that already is a criminal) uses to earn a living by pillaging and looting(You also had the bucanneers that were vessels from rivals countries that were "paid" to do piracy on the rival waters, without directly connecting is doings with his country). But that is not what makes one a "pirate" nor what piracy is about. The crime of piracy, is travelling in controlled waters without consent and without giving your identity when requested by authority. Is the equivalent of you driving your car in the highway without paying tolls, and not following street signs(example driving in the wrong direction, not stop in red stop lights). If you go on a boat(even today) and you aren't on international waters, and are requested to stop and give your information, and you don't do that, you're automatically a criminal, doing piracy, and you can be shot down/stopped. The same happens on air and land(In fact even people are forced to have an identification, so when requested they are forced to show it). Notice also that Luffy, invaded a marine base and stole from them(map in the live action, and swords in manga/anime), also destroyed Marine property, and assaulted soldiers and even a captain. These alone are at least 4 criminal charges. Taking that is sailing the seas in World Government waters without being registered and following the rules, it makes it another criminal charge(one that makes him a pirate). And yes, in real life you have to pay taxes, register your boat and pay licenses to be able to navigate. And the fact that he is publicly showing a pirate symbol in his boat is another criminal offense. You can think that piracy is simple the act of pillaging, but it is so much more and is not directly related with it. You can be a pirate without pillaging. And you can Pillage without being a Pirate.

@@bigivel You don’t need a specific scene to tell you what piracy means in the world of one piece. The author has literally spread it out through 1000 plus chapters. It’s the pursuit of the poneglyphs which is indirectly the pursuit of one piece. The wg including imu does not want the people to know about the void century. Roger quite literally started the great pirate era by declaring to find his treasure. This idea is what directly opposes the wg which is line with luffy’s theme of freedom. Also, before you say not everybody thinks like luffy the most relevant part of the story is the grand line and the new world quite literally everyone is in the struggle for one piece there.

well in the live action he actually stole the map in episode 1, so there you have it, a crime to call him pirate, in the anime is worse he literally does no crime until like episode 220+, and he already had a huge bounty.

Technically even in the manga (and anime) Luffy already committed two crimes in the first chapter, first for stealing Zoro's sword from evidence locker and second for freeing Zoro and helped him escape custody

Luffy isn't a usual pirate, but he's still a criminal in the sense that he's against the world government's rules. But i doubt that he wants to be King of the Sovereign Citizens, and his roll model is Shanks who identifies as a pirate (even though we haven't seen him act criminally other than against the world government too).

Lil bit info here, you cannot go from west to east, north to south and vice versa in normal way. You have to go to redline first. First season not stated why you cant go normally tho, maybe next season since we really go to The Grandline that season.

The Best Pirates during the Piracy golden age didn't kill anyone on the ships they captured if a crew of ship thought they were going to die they would fight harder so most Pirate captains avoided killing people if they could as getting a ship to surrender without a fight was the goal and a crew was more likely to surrender if they thought they were going to survive as they had zero interest in the Cargo as they were just payed to crew the ship.

3:18 it’s a major theme of One Piece that that is not true. There’s good and bad pirates, and good and bad marines. The live action is even more blatant about it because they explicitly discuss it repeatedly. The civilians are just there in the live action. They get a lot more development in the anime, but the anime has more time to work with.

This trailer reminded me that the show did not explain why you can't simply sail to the Grand Line from anywhere. Technically it's just an equator, a line on a map, but... (tiniest spoiler in my first reply)

(Spoiler maybe)I loved the show, and also the honest trailer was good and i understand it for fun but for the sake of argument, his points only fit for the live action, if you go to anime or manga, you can give an answer for everything, even calling him pirate instead of sailer.. may not be accurate but from what i remember marines have banned a lot of things so even just going to some islands can make u a criminal.. and things like searching for forgotten history and not giving a shit and punching nobles those make them criminals in marines eyes anyway so there is no problem with them called pirates and not sailers

I never understood the obsession with Luffy's ethnicity, JUST because Luffy could be HALF ANYTHING... Scottish included and still look EXACTLY the same and your accent has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with skin color its just who ya spent tume with, plus the grandfather was always gone
