Very cool to watch. I was wondering what the risks are to injury to your minks an dogs? For instance I can see the dogs get bitten by the rats. Are you disinfecting the occasional wounds they sustain or is it not really a problem? I've also noticed some farms can have some potentially dangerous objects sharp fencing etc. And I'm always a bit nervous when I see a tractor lifting something heavy for the dogs to run under and grab the rats feeling the nest. You ever worry about these things? Is experience and knowing what to look out for just how you navigate these things?
@JosephCartertheMinkMan
@JosephCartertheMinkMan Год назад
I worry about everything but the rat bites. My dogs are fully vaccinated so disease isn't an issue or at least it never has been so far. And so far I've only seen one rat bite ever get infected and needed medical attention. The obstacles and machinery are the true dangers, but even then, injuries are rare, and so far have all been mild. I actually have gotten hurt far worse than any of the animals.
@Serpheos

@@JosephCartertheMinkMan Thank you for the answer. Yeah, I can imagine it can get a bit dangerous when running around for these rats. Maybe stepping on something etc. I hope you got good insurance for potential injuries to yourself. Glad to hear nothing serious never happened to your dogs and minks. Fingers crossed it never happens. I've been watching your videos for years. It's very entertaining. What really makes it enjoyable is your enthusiasm and charisma. i realy love rats. I had 3 as pets, Most people dont understand how smart, fast and destructive these little creatures can be. @JosephCartertheMinkMan
@JosephCartertheMinkMan Год назад
Yeah I grew up with rats as pets as a kid. I would say they are probably one of the best small rodent pet a kid can have. If anyone ever asks me advice on what small rodent to get as a pet I almost always recommend rats. Wild rats are actually quite different from domestic rats. You can raise them in captivity and treat them just like a domestic rat, but they rarely get anywhere near as tame and typically stay quite aggressive towards each other. Domestic rats have been carefully selected to be less aggressive towards each other. Naturally, rats are vicious towards each other and love to kill and eat babies or any injured rats in the colony. They will sometimes even pick on a healthy rat and tear it apart. But they've bred that behavior out of most domestic rats.

These mean little killing machines have such immense dexterity/agility that they get bitten a lot less often than the dogs while going for the kill from what I've seen. It can be observed most clearly when Sherlock was hunting the huge rat around the 15:38 mark. They can perform these insane contortions of the body to avoid getting bitten while the dogs more often just brute force it and sometimes take some hits along the way. Respect!

Nothing against your older videos. I’ve watched a lot of those too. but just not as much ratting and minking. You’ve developed in skill for sure as time progresses with your editing and you got a good team that helps you video record now a days compared to say 6-7 years ago. You’re channels only going to get bigger and more successful so it’s cool to see that these videos helps you and your family making a living while also being informative and entertaining. I also just admire that it’s family friendly. Keep in mind I’m a guy in my 20s with no kids. But the world has so much negativity in it. It’s hard to even find anything without cursing and profanity. And keep in mind I’m someone who loves dark comedy and all that stuff too. But I just admire the way you conduct yourself. And obviously you’re a father so you have to keep it rated g because you don’t wanna look like a father teaching your kids wrong. But there are times when it’s just you and a friend and times like those could easily be made a dirty joke or two just being said because it’s all adults there at the moment. But you’re just really consistent and you keep it family friendly which I truely admire. I plan on moving to Wyoming state in the very near future. Me and my girlfriend want to get married and then start a life there. We both have a connection to Utah as well both for different reasons but we’re from Minnesota. I really hope to meet you one day. Sadly to old. And he is realy aggressiv towards anything that moves. Jospeh tried to breed him in the breeding season as he is realy great mink but instead mating he went all time after the female just to fight her

Good to see Sherlock's fur on his back fill back in, your treatments apparently are working, good job!

Your camera lady is awesome, she knows exactly where to look at all times and the camera is generally really steady, kudos to her!

I've only just found your channel completely by chance if i'm being true. But i'm hooked watching you with your wonderful dogs, and amazing mink and what a guy sherlock is. It takes me back many years ago on local farms in the south of England helping my grandad Bob along with my uncles, all of which have sadly passed away but never forgetting the great times we all had. Most of all my first dog terminator, what a boy loyal to a fault and never gave up his chance to catch a rat. Even when we would spend 2 days a nights digging the bugger out off a rabbit burrow as he was having such a good time down there. he just didn't wanna come out. from big dee all the best
