Nothing was more terrifying to my Brother & I than seeing a spaceman come out of the woods towards us behind Uncle Rays house. Never had we seen anything like it outside of Lost In Space. You know how many years ago that was? My Brother & I were terrified. My Father had tears streaming down his face. We had no clue that Uncle Ray was underneath. Of course that spaceman was happy to see us having just arrived. We weren't as happy to see it. We were terrified! I don't think either of us ran as fast as that as we did that day to get to our Father. In fact Melissa, I don't have any recollection as to how we ended up in my Fathers arms as he stood over 6'. Thank you for sharing a Bee Keepers Journey. I love learning & seeing how this all works. This is very educational. Your local Library may even like for you to come share with their children how we get Honey Have a good day. Enjoyed your video & the memory it brought back..
Aw Melissa thank you very much for showing us this video.I am in my 70's and had no idea about how to keep bees.I am looking forward to more videos I will be watching for sure.
Several years ago a friend of mine decided he wanted to get into bees. He spent a pile of money getting everything he needed, he was starting from scratch. All set up and ordered 500.00 dollars worth of bees. He got them, introduced them to the hive a a few days later they all left. The end of his bee 🐝 keeping project. I’d like to get in to bee keeping. I’ll be watching for your success.
Good job with the apiary! It looks like alot of fun! Perhaps in the Fall, you could prune your young trees to encourage new growth and promote the shape you want the trees to grow into. All of your trees & fruit bushes will do MUCH better if you cultivate around them. Grass & weeds will choke out the berry bushes & the fruit trees and their new growth. Keeping the weeds & grass out is difficult but is a necessary task to encourage new and healthy growth! Good luck, your property is a full time job in itself, how do you work a full time job (that's far away/has a long commute time) and keep up on your chores? I know, JOE! God Bless!
What an informative fun video. A friend of mine had a couple of bee hives. He really got into it. He went out on his property and marked off a huge section of land. I'd say, 60 feet by 60 feet. He tilled up the entire area except about a 3 foot strip in the middle. He set out his bee hives along the center grass row. He then got about a gallon size container of miscellaneous flower seeds and planted them all over the tilled soil. To make a long story short, you get the idea. I walked back there one day and there were flowers of all kinds everywhere. He thought he could give his bees a treat close to the hives. I buy two quarts of honey off him each year and it's the best honey I ever tasted. He has about 10 hives and said he thought of starting another patch about 2 acres away because it's a hobby he loves. (I talk a lot). "honey butter" is mouth watering on fresh rolls out of the oven, especially during a holiday meal.
Loved this! I was nervous for you and for the bees. Now I want to set my own hives up. They are not doing very well sitting in my garage. Thank you for the motivation!
You and Joe are a match made in heaven! Neither one of you stop! Going from one project to the next! Kudos to you girl, I am not a fan of bees! I swear you are going to run out of hours in the day! Between working full time, cooking, gardening, the animals and now this! Enjoy!
Looking great Melissa. That keto diet is definitely working for you. Bees and bears don't mix. My father finally had to give up. I love that you are giving it a go, and wishing you all the best with that.
I am enjoying this bee keeping project. I learned that most of the bees live like 30 -60 days while the Queen could live up to 3 years. That's a lot of Babies! LOL.
Hi. Thanks for your video I'm also new. I also used the front feeders and I had a robbing situation and losty second hive I later learned front feeders I voted robbing so I switched to a top feeder. It holds lots more sugar water and you don't have to interrupt the hive as often. I managed to keep the other her hive through the winter I also experienced the stinging through the suit. I believe it was because it was the dearth period when they get grumpy due to
Wow Melissa I couldn’t even come close to what you’re doing, and it’s so awesome when you get that honey though. Thanks so much for sharing this video. Blessings! 👍👍👍👏👏👏💯💯💯🤩🤩🤩🙌🙌🙌
Success. That is awesome Melissa. This old Texas girl has never tended bees, just watched my Dad from afar. They fascinate me. Wish you much success in making some wonderful honey. Loved the rooster crowing in the background. 👍😘🐝🍯
Melissa, I adore you. You do so many interesting things, and I like listening to your voice. Never viewed a hive being started from the beginning. Thanks for sharing that with us. Good luck with everything. God Bless. Love you! xxoo
A much braver woman than I for sure. Love Bees, but don’t think I could do what you’re doing! Great video and very interesting! Looking forward to more. 🐝
Thanks for sharing with us Melissa, sure hope you get lots of honey and pollination from your bee's. It will be interesting to see how they do for you next year too. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.
Great to see your bees are doing good Melissa. Keep up the good work. I check my bees once a week. Getting ready to maybe do a split on my hive today. Keep the sugar water on them and they should be fine. If I lived closer to you all I would help you with your bees than we could learn from one another how to take care of them. Can’t wait to see see more videos of your bees.
Many thanks for this video. I've been hoping to see how it's done. I love the idea of raising bees and selling honey. I also love collecting honey from trees, which a lot of people do in northern Michigan. Truthfully, honey from bees looks easier. Honey from trees is heavy work; very heavy work. I am so impressed by you two. God bless you both for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. So important!!
fyi you should keep your frames in the same order that they are in the nuc when you put them in your hive. You may want to buy a took that you use on the frames to grab them. You want to mount your feeder jars to a board just screw down the white holder and it is much easer to fill the jar again
Great job again. Love it. Can you do a video on canning fish and venison. Or maybe you did and I didn't see it. Let me know . Phil from kasson Minnesota.
Are you thinking those rocks will keep out the bears and coons? I know absolutely nothing about beekeeping but I know how precious they are to my success in the yard and gardens so I have comfrey in several places to keep the pollinators happy…that’s about the extent my husband will allow because he hates bees. I only ask about the rocks because I struggle with predators just feeding the hummingbirds and orioles here in Michigan so I have to pick up all feeders every night just to have a fighting chance. I could peek in every day so weekly, bi-weekly or monthly matters not to me. Thanks for enlightening and entertaining us on all things As the Rooster Crows!!!:):):)
You are braver than I when it comes to bees, but I do love honey. 😊. Question: I live in Minnesota but am from Mississippi and Louisiana….do you think the mosquitoes are worse here than down South? My opinion is yes! They seem bigger/fiercer here. Am I the only one who thinks that?
OMG the mosquitoes here are FAR worse than they are in the south, they are especially horrible this year. I even have to put mosquito spray on the dogs to let them out. Poor Joanie had so many bites after 30 minutes of being outside her eyes were swollen and red.
@@astheroostercrows6435 😩 I missed all last summer because I almost succumbed to Covid and was inpatient so long. I was so looking forward to this summer. But I can’t handle the insect bites. My daughter lives a few miles north of Finlayson and she says they are horrible there too.
Thank you Phil, I'm a few pounds shy of 50 pounds. I at first did the Keto diet which is low carbs and no sugar then I've switched to the Carnivore diet which is just meat and butter. Carnivore really has me dropping the weight BUT I do have my cheat days
So interesting!! Thanks for taking us along. You have so many cool hobbies. I’m looking forward to more bee videos. Will you be doing any pottery videos this summer?
I just started my 6 week intermediate class for pottery, I hope once things slow down I can start practicing my pottery here at home. I'm intermediate and should still be in the beginners class...lol. I'm gonna get it eventually! Lol
@@astheroostercrows6435 Good for you! My Mother and I tried our hand at that years ago, she was much better than I lol. It will be fun watching your videos when your ready to post. I enjoy watching all your hobbies you take on.
What are their names? 😉Don't forget the "Telling of the Bees" so they will stay with you. I know you're feeding them bee food right now, but do you have plans to plant a small field of clover? Not only is clover honey delicious but bees can travel 4-5 miles in search of food. You will save them a lot of travel miles if they can forage in their own backyard. Good luck with your new venture!
How many bees got into your truck since the door was wide open? You may want to check to see if there is a local chapter of the Beekeeper's Association that you can join. They frequently put on workshops. I kept expecting you to need to release a queen, but I guess the nuec came with one.
until they have that bottom box and one one top full, once I put the honey supers on top then I will stop feeding. That was a recommendation from someone up here
I will try to answer those questions in the next video...a nuc is just 5 frames of brood (bee larve) and honey, it give you a jump start. One nuc had more bees, brood and honey than the other
My neighbor used to have a couple hives, every evening they came down to my house to buzz all my flowers, during the winter they lost one hive. Don’t know what happened but they have no bee’s now. I have yet to see any honey bee’s this year, only wasps and couple of bumblebee’s, it’s sad.
