Honey Harvesting Step 1 of 3 - Getting The Hive Ready

Part 1 - In this video we prepare our bee hive for removal of the honey. The crown board must be placed below the supers with Porter Bee Escapes. These escapes allow the bees to leave the supers and enter the brood box, but not go back up into the supers. If these are successful the supers will be free of bees and can be taken away to harvest the honey. The hive has not been opened for over 2 years and we have a very active colony. The last time I opened up the hive the bees were very aggressive.

you are really blessed with honest neighbors and a good bees . In such a crowded box to get the honey in the last super men to climb all levels . I think my bees will start swarming if I leave not enough space for them . I use real 3cm or more wood to avoid birds , vespers and maybe that's the key of over aggressive . That lid trow on the top expose the colony at wasps and mice attack so maybe that's making then be aggressive Sorry if I look like a smart guy I admire your work and i just wrote some words .

Nice video. With the bee escapes in place the queen excluder is not necessary since the escapes will not allow the bees to migrate upwards.

I'm amazed, you waited 2 years to inspect your hive. You never checked for disease, CCD, etc. Your hive brood boxes and supers aren't painted and sealed properly to prevent wood rot from destroying the hive. Unless, you built the hive boxes and supers with cedar wood (doubtful) you missed an important step. Yes, I know, painting and sealing the wood is optional. The frames are loaded and should have been harvested a long time ago. I'm surprised your hive didn't swarm. I appreciate your video. However, your lack of attention to important proper care procedures really amazed me. I'd appreciate reading your comments. Yes, I'm an amateur beekeeper.

Hi Stan, my name is Morgen I liked your comment on this video. You made points that I didn't get to. Being an amature beekeeper sometimes has it's advantages and disadvantages. And he wasn't even really smoking them I raise Russian honey bees, what you would call over smoking them, I call not giving them enough smoke. Here on my place me and my parents have a motto it's "Smoke em' till they choke." Him on the other hand he wouldn't of even needed smoke on that hive, because there was hardly any bees even in there.

+Stan Noll You don't think cedar wood would repel the bees? I'm starting up a couple of boxes soon and never considered the use of cedar, but its somethign I have access to, so would love to know.
@stannoll6248
@stannoll6248 8 лет назад
I'd suspect cedar wood might bother the bees. It's an assumption on my part. I've never known anyone to use cedar wood. I have a cedar wood chest and no insect bothers it. I'm thinking bees would have trouble with cedar.

We use to store boxes and others from a nice woodworker who make them in thick quality wood and lids in two waters and the handles on outside from re-bar and those colony living in luxury are not aggressive at all . I always leave some space for bees to build themselves not much just last frame missing so they can play building . Usually something stress the beehive and that colony start growing soldier bees and that make some behive more aggressive then others .

We have a large garden Mike. Bees are not really a problem in a smallish garden if the hive is positioned carefully. Unfortunately, we found out that Mrs. P. sufferes from anaphylactic shock so we do not interfere with the bees anymore. The hive is far away from the house and the bees look after themselves. :-)

I may be wrong, but I never smoke my bees that much, I don't need to, just drift some smoke along the entrance - 1 puff. I'm always up for other opinions and knowledge as that's they way I've learnt over the years. Also 2 years is a very long time, varroa treatment should be done anyway. This year (2015), has been extremely bad for varroa in SW Ireland I think due to hive mismanagement...just my 10 cents. Great honey crop though but wow, the bees are choking on the amount of smoke used!
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 9 лет назад
Jon A I use as much smoke as I feel necessary Jon. The bees have been very aggressive in the past and the smoke keeps them occupied. The hive was left for two years as there was no sign of varroa on the hive floor screen and there was not enough honey to harvest the year before.
@tudortirziu825
@tudortirziu825 8 лет назад
+Jon A I remember a year when the bee store told us to triple the varoa liquid because the maker make it diluted and maybe bad medicine is the key of getting rid of varoa .
@f.demascio1857
@f.demascio1857 8 лет назад
I rarely go very deep into my hives & only treat with oxalic acid 2x a year. Varroa counts are very low with oxalic compared to the toxic chemicals the "officials" recommend. Every beekeeper has to make their own calls on what to do & how to do it. If the bees had it their way, there would be no human involvement. Some of the strongest colonies in the world are not managed by humans at all, they're feral.

Hi guys, i have two questions. 1) I have a beehive it has three floors. There is no queen cage inside. Which floor or floors put the eggs by queen. 2) I don't want to give to the bees sugar, i want bees eat their own honey; i wonder that it's possible. The weather is -10 in winter here. Maybe the honey get freeze and they can't eat. Thanks for the answers.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 4 года назад
Without a queen excluder, the queen can her eggs wherever she wants. The purpose of the excluder is to stop her laying eggs in the upper sections where you want to harvest the honey from. There is no issue with honey freezing, you can look online to reassure yourself. :-)

@FloryJohann
@FloryJohann 4 года назад
I like to add to the other comment. Bees may not go pass the queen excluder if the frames pass that excluder are not drawn out. Take some frames with eggs larvae from the brood frame and put them above the queen excluder , this way the bees move pass it. Also in winter you need to remove the queen excluder, because the worker bees move up where it is warmer and if the queen can not move up with them, the queen will stay cold and die.. Bee keepers giving bees either sugar water or dry sugar as an emergengy substitute. Sugar is the closest thing to honey you can give to the bees. Yes, sugar is lacking some minerals and vitamins but it can keep bees alive. Bees will start to die if they do not have food for 2 days or longer. So feed your bees if needed. Bees can generate their own heat if the temperature drops, so the honey may not freeze inside the hive.

@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 лет назад
You must not remove he queen from the hive, the queen excluder should always be on the hive above the brood box to keep the queen away from the supers. You do not want the queen laying eggs in the supers as these are only for honey. If you see the queen on a super brush her back into the hive. If you lose the queen the bees will continue to feed any queens that are in queen cells. If there are no queen cells they will try to produce another queen by feeding some larvae royal jelly. They will only leave the hive with a queen. I hope this helps! :-)

There are some poor practices shown here which is concerning for new beekeepers watching who are still learning. Rule Number One is always check your brood frames for disease before taking any honey off the hive for human consumption. This cannot be stressed enough. Number 2. Not checking a hive for two years is irresponsible beekeeping. If this hive had been affected by one of the diseases which are easily spread, you would have done a great job in detrimentally affecting other peoples hives in the surrounding areas. Number 3. There is not need to over smoke your bees. a couple of puffs is all that is required. Maybe you could remake the video to demonstrate good beekeeping practice.

Opinions are like butt-holes. Everyone has one & most of them stink. Teach your bee classes the way you want. Experience is the best teacher of all, & obviously this gentleman has plenty of experience.

+Kimmat - He did not say he did not check the beehive for two years. What he said was he did not take any honey out of it for two years as last summer was not a good summer. Pay attention to what is being said in the video please.

Kimmat : All good advice. Smoking your bees will cause them to go feed on their honey. They gorge themselves in fear they may have to leave the hive.

hello Russell. what kind of honey do you have there? you are well equipped: mask,gloves ...why do you use so much smoke? they don't even attack you.
@RussellPlatten

+Valentin alexandru Hello Valentin, our bees feed on anything and everything, there is no main food source in our area. I use a lot of smoke because my bees can get pretty aggressive and my wife suffers from anaphylactic shock if she is stunk by a bee.

So, why is she filming and handling the camera while being around the bees? You must have good live insurance on her. I never would tell anyone to handle the camera while I know that they are allergic to bee stings.

+Bonnie Flory Good question Bonnie. I would never tell my wife to do anything. I asked her to stay away, but she insisted that she was there. I made sure she was wrapped up properly from top to bottom before we started with four layers of clothing including the bee suit. She was safe for the filming. I must admit that I was not particularly happy about her being there. I wanted to get rid of the bees after we found out she had a reaction to them, but she was adamant that we kept them.

Russell Platten You could take your wife to the doctor and he could prescribe a EPI-pen which would be kept in the refrigerator and if your wife get stung then you give her the EPI-pen shot which is for allergic reactions of many kinds. I do not know if you may be able to get a EPI-pen in your country, but it would be a good thing to have in an emergency. We had to use the pen twice with one of our boys after eating mushrooms and another time when he ate sunflower seeds.

+Bonnie Flory She has two Epipens Bonnie, she had one with her when we made the film. She takes one everywhere she goes in her handbag. Thank you for the advice though, it is appreciated. We get them on prescription here in the UK. She was prescribed these after her first incident. Funnily enough she had been stung before she had anaphylactic shock with no reaction.

@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 4 года назад
@@based.tetovar3550 If you see a swarm of bees, they are trying to find a new place to set up a hive. The queen is with them and it is fairly easy to capture the swarm in a cardboard box. You can then open your hive and drop the swarm inside with the queen. They should then stay and you will have a new colony! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ub3IJCd2P8Y.html
