My honeysuckle is growing happy in my garden for 3 years already. The best flowering time is past, but Major Wheeler is still blooming and delights us with wonderful trumpet shape flowers. Hummingbirds and bees love it.
it is a reliable and dependable addition in our garden - disease resistant, drought tolerant, thrives in humid climates and has long blooming time.
It was also the plant of the year in 2010. What else could we want from this hardy climber!
I am also showing the arbor on which honeysuckle is growing. I made it myself from left over wood sticks. Enjoy!

Love your very healthy Major Wheeler, Olga! I have a three-year-old John Clayton, the yellow variety, and I echo your sentiment on the beauty of these honeysuckles. My John Clayton has blue-green foliage. The hummingbirds adore them!

You are so dear. I love watching all of your videos and the great advice you give on all the plants in your garden. I had a Major Wheeler that was left in a pot by the previous tenant here. I didn't know what it was, it looked like a dead vine before the leaves came on. I am surprised it grew at all, the soil in the pot was like cement! I am not a fan of red colors in my garden, so I gave it to my nephew, who is an avid gardener. It is still flourishing in the same pot, they have not planted it yet. Amazing how hardy it is!

thanks for sharing how you’ve planted the branches with cement to make the arbor. Great idea. Will duplicate you. Awesome

This was a wonderful video. I just ordered 3 of this variety to cover a fence. I’m thinking now one is enough. 😂 unless I want to cover all of New Jersey.

You must have a big fence! Just give those roots a shady spot and your honeysuckles will cover half of New Jersey!

Plenty of hummingbirds. My butterfly bush is the biggest attractor of hummingbirds and butterflies.

Did it bloom in the first year? How long did it take?

I love honeysuckles, but here on Vancouver Island my honeysuckles get swarmed by aphids. So not maintenance free, I have to kill the aphids for them to flourish again.

It fascinates me, how plants behave in different parts of the world! I have a privet hedge and gardeners from the south are horrified of it. For them it is an ugly invader pesky weed. For me - somewhat quick growing polite hedge. Happy gardening!

I hope that your boxwoods survived in proximity to the cement used for the arbor.

how do you make this garden arch? Honeysuckle has a beautiful meaning in Chinese meaning "long love for couple in next life"
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 2 года назад
I make garden structures, using trigs and tree branches. This one I made before I stated my RU-vid channel, but I am planning to construct another one from cut down branches and will be showing how I approach such a task. Stay tuned.

Love honeysuckle but I’ve found they become very woody as they grow. Only flowering on the top 50 percent. I don’t know how to fix that.
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 3 года назад
Hm, interesting. My honeysuckle is just 3 years old and I am not dealing with that problem yet. Did you try pruning it more severely?
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 3 года назад
Yes I had a honeysuckle that only flowered top half and was just mature wood bottom half. This was not the look I wanted so I cut it all the way back to the thick wood but it did not survive. It came with the house we bought but we couldn’t save it.

It's normal especially in arid conditions but can happen anywhere. Can be a result of over trimming. If the top is healthy your good. Think of a grape vine or wisteria both are woody. These plants are intelligent if an area is not being used, it seals it so the nutrients move to the parts that are. You could also train part of the vine to come back down then wrap around area to cover.
